INTRODUCTION
Fish belongs to the class of
vertebrates’ species, a part of the
Phylum Chordata characterized by
having backbones (Guether, 1998).
Fish is a type of animal that has a
backbone, lives in the water and
has fins. Most fish have scales
covering their bodies and breathe
with gills (Gigg, 2009).
Fish occurs naturally or have been
introduced in all but the smallest and
most isolated water bodies (Tammi et
al., 2003). The great variety of water
body types implies different
challenges related to fish monitoring
and assessment of ecological status
(Water Framework Directive,
EuropeanCommission 2000).
Fish merit is our concern due to the
fact that it is the primary source of
livelihood most of the people living
near on the riverside, integrates
economic growth and pose a great
impact to human consumption. Their
widespread distribution throughout all
types of water bodies is essential in
maintaining ecological balance and
niches themselves, man should
conserve their existence.
We should be responsible in
keeping them away from extinction.
We should protect and stop the
destruction of their natural habitat,
such as using of chemicals and
polluting the aquatic environment that
would destroy the production of native
plants that provide as their spawning
and nursery areas.
In the Philippines, Pulangi River is
the longest river in the province of
Bukidnon and one of the major
tributaries of the Rio Grande de
Mindanao, an extensive river system
in Mindanao (Ellorin et al., 2011).
Pulangi River contains a wide variety
of fish that provides funding to support
the needs and expenditure, especially
for those people who rely on fishing
and boating.
Fish Fauna Assessment of Pulangi
River is significant due to the fact that
this study has never been done in
Bukidnon. Keeping all these in view,
the present study will design to
assess the species composition,
ecological status and species
distribution of fish fauna of Pulangi
River in the boundary of Barangay
Natulongan and Bukang Liwayway in
the Municipality of Kibawe, Bukidnon.
Statement of the Problem

What are the species compositions

of fish fauna in Pulangi River?
What are the ecological statuses of
fish fauna in Pulangi River?
What are the species distributions
of fish fauna in Pulangi River?
Objectives of the Study

To determine the species

compositions of fish fauna in
Pulangi River.
To identify the ecological statuses of
fish fauna in Pulangi River.
To find out the species distributions
of fish fauna in Pulangi River.
Significance of the Study
There is a great need for a study
on these said species because of our
diminishing fish communities and
environmental changes. This study
can provide significant findings which
will benefit the community and
researchers.
This study will serve as a
depository of information about fishes
in Pulangi River before drastic
environmental changes will affect their
habitat and turned them into
extinction.
Scope and Delimitation

This study will only focus on fish

fauna assessment of Pulangi River
in the boundary of Barangay
Natulongan and Bukang Liwayway
in the Municipality of Kibawe,
Bukidnon.
It will be conducted on the last
week of October: Fish Fauna
Assessment will be limited on fishes
that will be caught by fishers and
people living near on the riverside.
The study will attempt to determine
the species compositions, ecological
statuses and species distributions of
fish fauna in Pulangi River.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
METHODOLOGY
 Selection of sampling areas for
collection
The specimens will be collected
in the town of Kibawe, Bukidnon.
The bases for choosing this
sampling area are the presence of
Pulangi River and different fishes
composition.
Out of 23 barangays of Kibawe,
Bukidnon, the boundary of Barangay
Natulongan and Bukang Liwayway
will be the chosen sampling area. The
sampling will be conducted on
October 29-30.
 Collection of specimens
The collection of fishes will be
collected through the possible total
fishes that will be caught by fishers
and other people living near in the
riverside including its anecdotal
record.
 Habitat Determination
The habitat determination will be
noted and described as to the
presence of its ecological status such
as endemic, endangered and
common fishes including the species
composition and distribution of fish
fauna in Pulangi River.
 Characterizing and identifying of
specimens
The composition, ecological status
and distribution of fish fauna will be
identified through laboratory testing,
unstructured interview from fishers
and people living near in the riverside
including its anecdotal record.
