The ultimate aim of this project is to design, develop and fabricate of pesticide sprayer and grass cutter
machine operated by solar power. The design is optimized with respect to size and shape. The functional and
unfunctional areas required material thickness is adopted and also utilization of solar energy by using
effective solar charger device. Less weight and high strength wheels were used for slow motion. This project
methodology is initially identified the problems faced by framers and money spend to cultivate the crops. A
few major problems are cutting weeds, unwanted grass etc in field and more manpower utilization for sprayer
pesticides. To these issues, this project has designed, developed and fabricated the machine low cost solar
operated cutting operation and spraying of pesticides. The design concept was made by using auto cad and
cero software (Pro-E). The Complete 3D digital model was done and validated the design. The same 3D
model is converted into 2D manufacturing drawings by using AutoCAD. Later, optimized machine was
fabricated by required material thickness and proper manufacturing approach. The fabricated machine was
tested and works effectively and efficiently.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION
Agricultural sector is changing the socio-economic environment of the population due to liberalization
and globalization. About 75% people are living in the rural area and are still dependent on agriculture. About
43% of geographical area is used for agricultural activity. Agriculture has been the backbone of the Indian
economy. As Indian population is growing continuously, the demand for producing crop per hector is also
increasing this requires efficient and high-capacity machines. So mechanization in agricultural industry plays
an important role in Indian economy. In current generation most of the countries do not have sufficient human
factor in agriculture sector and it affects the growth of developing countries. In India, there are 70% people
dependent on agriculture. So we need to study the agriculture. A lawn mower is a machine used for cutting
grass or lawns. A lawn is any area of grass; mostly tough grass which is neatly cut like in a private garden or
a public park.

Grass cutter machines had become very popular today. Most common machines are used for soft grass
furnishing. In our project grass cutter machine we are aimed to develop the construction of model and
operation. The main parts of the grass cutting machines are DC motor, relay switch for controlling motor,
Battery for charging it through solar panel. It is placed in a suitable machine structure. The motor has 30 rpm
and it is connected to the electric supply by the use of a roll of wire. The motor rpm increased by the help of
gears. Motor controlled by an electric switch for easy operation. The circular saw blades are attached in this
machine. The raw materials mainly used are GI sheet, motor, switch, wheel, wire, aluminium sheet, square
pipe, paint, insulating material and other standard item like nuts, bolts and reverts. The machines required for
manufacturing includes welding machine, grinding machine.

Moving the grass cutters with a standard motor powered grass cutters is an inconvenience, and no one
takes pleasure in it. Cutting grass cannot be easily accomplished by elderly, younger, grass cutter moving
with engine where it creates noise pollution due to the loud engine, and local air pollution due to the
combustion in the engine. Also, a motor powered engine requires periodic maintenance such as changing the
engine oil. Along with motor powered grass cutter, electric grass cutters are also hazardous and cannot be
easily used by all. Also, if the electric grass cutter is corded, moving could prove to be problematic and
dangerous. The prototype will also be charged from sun by using solar panels.

Along with grass operation and additional the pesticide sprayer mechanism is implemented in the
same vehicle which is driven by the pump Sprayers are mechanical devices that are specifically designed to
spray liquids quickly and easily. They come in a number of different varieties. In this project we will take a
look at solar operated mechanical sprayers. A sprayer of this type is a great way to use solar energy. Solar

based pesticides sprayer pump is one of the improved version of petrol engine pesticide sprayer pump. It is
vastly used in the agriculture field & also used for many purposes. This is having more advantages over petrol
engine sprayer pump. It uses the solar power to run the motor. So it is a pollution free pump compared to
petrol engine sprayer pump. In this project, two operations such as grass cutting and pesticide sprayer
operation is incorporated in the same vehicle and operated by using solar power.

1. Solar Power :
Solar cells and solar panels have lots of uses. They are in everyday things like calculators, watches, and
flashlights. There are solar-powered toys, radios, and MP3 players. There are solar-powered cell phones and
pagers. Using solar power with devices like these means you never have to worry about batteries. Solar panels
are sometimes used to make the electricity to light up road signs and bus stops. They may make the electricity
that makes roadside emergency phones or parking meters work. Even some ATMs (machines that let you get
money from or put money into your bank account) have solar panels.

1. Innovative Works of Solar Power:

Solar panels have even been used on airplanes—but only on a few. The problem is they are hard to use with
planes. They need to cover a big area in order to make enough electricity. When it gets dark, they don’t work.
The first solar-powered plane to fly a long distance was the Solar Challenger. It crossed the English Channel
in Europe in 1981. Its wings had more than 16,000 solar cells. In 2008 the Zephyr-6 spent more than three
days in the air. It was a plane without any pilot. It carried batteries that stored electricity from its panels for
use at night.

Fig 1.1: shows planes with solar power

1.1.2 How solar cell make electricity:

The process of making electricity begins when the silicon atoms absorb some light. The light’s energy knocks
some electrons out of the atoms. The electrons flow between the two layers. The flow makes an electric
current. The current can leave the cell through the metal contacts and be used. When light hits a solar cell,

Dept. of Automobile Engineering, GPT KUSHALNAGAR Page 3

FABRICATION OF GRASS CUTTER WITH SPRAYER MACHINE OPERATED BY SOLAR POWER

much of its energy is wasted. Some light bounces off or passes through the cell. Some is turned into heat.
Only light with the right wavelengths or colours, is absorbed and then turned into electricity.

Figure 1.2: Shows a basic of solar cell

2. Photovoltaic Principles:
The photo voltaic effect can be observed in nature in variety of materials that have shown best performance
in sun light is the semiconductors as stated above. When the photons from the sun absorbed in a
semiconductor, that creates free electron with higher energies then the created there must be an electric field
to induce these higher energy electrons to flow out of the semi-conductor to do useful work. A junction of
materials, which have different electrical properties, provides the electric field in most solar cells for the
photo interaction in a semiconductor.

3. What Are Pesticides? :

Pesticides are natural or synthetic agents that are used to kill unwanted plant or animal pests. While the term
pesticide is now often associated with synthetic chemical compounds, it was not until relatively recently that
synthetic pesticides came into use. Naturally occurring compounds or natural extracts have been used as
pesticides since ancient times. The earliest pesticides were most likely salt, sulfurous rock, and extracts of
tobacco, red pepper, and the like. It is removed that the Napoleonic army used crushed chrysanthemums to
control lice, with limited effectiveness. Petroleum oils, heavy metals, and arsenic were used liberally to
control unwanted pests and weeds until the 1940s, when they were largely replaced for many uses by organic
synthetic pesticides, the most famous of which is DDT

LITERATURE SURVEY
P.Amrutesh et al.[1] Solar Grass Cutter with Linear Blades by Using Scotch Yoke Mechanism, the paper
presents, solar grass cutter is a machine that uses sliding blades to cut a lawn at an even length. Even more
sophisticated devices are there in every field. Power consumption becomes essential for future. Solar grass
cutter is a very useful device which is very simple in construction. It is used to maintain and upkeep lawns in
gardens, schools, college’s etc. We have made some changes in the existing machine to make its application
easier at reduced cost. Our main aim in pollution control is attained through this. Unskilled operation can
operate easily and maintain the lawn very fine and uniform surface look.
Linz, A. Ruckelshausen and E. Wunder(2014) et.al [2] The authors are working in the fields of unmanned
or remote controlled autonomous field robots, navigation, image-based sensor fusion as well as agricultural
applications. In particular field robots have been applied for a few years in outdoor agricultural field
applications. Within an interdisciplinary research group these technologies are transferred to robot
applications in vineyards and orchards. The goal is the availability of an autonomous service robot, whereas
first applications are site-specific plant protection (e.g. precise spraying), mulching and picking up fruit boxes.
A first version of the robot with electrical drives and precise sprayers has already been developed.
Varikuti Vasantha Rao et al .[3] Multiple Power Supplied Fertilizer Sprayer, In this paper, the design of
multiple power supplied fertilizer sprayer has been presented. The proposed system is the modified model of
the two stroke petrol engine powered sprayer which minimizes the difficulties of the existing power sprayer
such as operating cost, changing of fuel etc. The two stroke petrol engine has been replaced by a direct
current motor and operated by the electrical energy stored in the battery attached to the unit. It could also be
operated on direct current during rainy and cloudy weather conditions. This system can be used for spraying
pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers and paints.
MansukhbhaiJaganiat.al(1994) developed an attachment for a motorbike to get a multipurpose tool bar. It
addresses the twin problems of farmers in Saurashtra namely paucity of labourers and shortage of bullocks.
This motor cycle driven plough (Bullet Santi) can be used to carry out various farming operations like furrow
opening, sowing, inter-culturing and spraying operations. Mansukhbhai’s intermediate-technology
contraption proved efficient and cost-effective for small sized farms. It could plough one acre (0.4 ha) of land
in less than half an hour on just two litters of diesel oil. Using motorbike-santi, the cost of weeding a typical
field was found to be just Rs 8/ha because as much as 10 ha land could be covered in a single day. But, this
spraying equipment needs fuel for its running and proper operation which increases its operating cost.

1. Material
The material selection is one of the important and mandatory stage in the designing any functional structures.
The structural designer initial primary work is material selection and using the market available materials.
The selecting materials based on the various factors, major factors like strength, cost, availability,
environmental condition having corrosion resistance, weight and manufacturability includes weld ability and
handling etc.
For this project, materials were selected which is easily and readily available in market and chosen the
medium strength structural tubes and plates.

1. SPRAYER DEVICE:
A sprayer is a mechanical device used to spray the liquid like pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers
to the crops in order to avoid any pest. Sprayer provides optimum utilization of pesticides or any
liquid with minimum efforts.
Spraying of pesticides is an important task in agriculture for protecting the crops from insects.
Farmers mainly use hand operated or fuel operated spray pump for this task. This conventional
sprayer causes user fatigue due to excessive bulky and heavy construction.

1. CLASSIFICATION OF SPRAYING SYSTEMS

In India there are different types of sprayer can be used according to the growth of different types of
crops as fallow:
1) Hand operated sprayer.

Dept. of Automobile Engineering, GPT KUSHALNAGAR Page 9

FABRICATION OF GRASS CUTTER WITH SPRAYER MACHINE OPERATED BY SOLAR POWER

2) Engine operated sprayer/fuel operated sprayer.

3) Electric motor pump sprayer.
4) Hand operated sprayer: is operated by hand so that the discomfort occur while spraying.
5)Engine operated sprayer/fuel operated sprayer: As we know that engine operated sprayer is
working on petrol. Petrol is costly fuel so in farmer economical point of view it is not good.
6)Electric motor pump sprayer. Electric motor pump sprayer is used electricity for charging
Battery in this way the pump can e drive according to battery charging, In the above sprayer there
are some drawbacks such as
● It cannot be use continually spraying. we can say that it cannot be use for long time.
● Engine operated sprayer can be operated on petrol so it is not possible to use every

farmer.
●Here 70% of people can be live in rural areas. in rural areas there are insufficient
electricity. so it is not possible to use electric motor pump for spraying.

3.3.3 BATTERY:
In the modern era, electrical energy is normally converted from mechanical energy, solar energy,
and chemical energy etc. A battery is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy.
The first battery was developed by Alessandro Volta in the year of 1800. In the year 1836, John
Frederic Daniel, a British chemist developed the Daniel cell as an improved version of the voltaic
cell. From that time until today, the battery has been the most popular source of electricity in many
daily life applications. In our daily life, we generally use two types of battery; one of them is which
can be used once before it gets totally discharged. Another type of battery is rechargeable which
means it can be used multiple times by recharging it externally. The former is called primary battery
and the later is called secondary battery. Batteries can be found in different sizes. A battery may be
as small as a shirt button or may be so big in size that a whole room will be required to install a
battery bank. With this variation of sizes, the battery is used anywhere from small wrist watches to
a large ship. The batteries are used as a storage device for solar energy which can be further
converted into electrical energy. The only exceptions are isolated sunshine load such as irrigation
pumps or drinking water supplies for storage, for small units with output means. Since both the

photo-voltaic system and batteries are high in capital costs, it is necessary that the overall system be
optimized with respect to available energy and local demand pattern. To be economically attractive
the storage of solar electricity combination of properties:
(1) Low cost
(2) Long life
(3) High reliability
(4) High overall efficiency

DC battery is power source for this spray pump. This battery is charged by solar panel and
removable. It has following specification,
Current – 7.2Amp
Voltage –12V Fig.12 shows 3D model of Battery.

3.3.4 CIRCULAR SAW BLADE FEATURES :

Choose the number of teeth, the angle of the tooth hook and laser-cut features on your blade to
match your project’s needs.
● Price: Circular saw blades vary widely in price. More expensive blades usually have
features that extend the longevity of the blade while enhancing performance.
Inexpensive blades may dull quickly or produce rougher cuts, so make sure you
weigh the benefits of each blade in addition to the initial cost.
●Teeth: Blades with more teeth yield a cleaner cut. Blades with fewer teeth deliver
faster cuts with rougher edges. The number of teeth should always be considered in
relation to the diameter of the blade. Fewer teeth create larger gullets, removing

FABRICATION OF GRASS CUTTER WITH SPRAYER MACHINE OPERATED BY SOLAR POWER

material quickly and reducing clogging, which is important for lengthwise cuts.

●Tooth hook: The attack angle of the tooth (positive, neutral or negative). An
aggressive positive hook produces faster cuts but tends to increase tear out.
●Expansion slots: Slots in the blade that prevent warping by allowing the metal to
expand and cool when it gets hot.
● Laser-cut features: Laser-cutting delivers a more precise result than stamping,
enhancing accuracy and performance. Look for laser-cut bodies, arbours and
expansion slots on saw blades for higher quality cuts.
●Coating: Some blades are coated to prevent corrosion, friction and/or gum up,
extending blade life.

3.3.6 SOLAR PANEL :

Sun radiations are incident on the solar panel. Solar panel consist of photovoltaic cells convert this
solar energy in to the electric energy. Further this current generated by the solar cells is supplied to
the battery via electric wires. One controller is placed between the solar panel and the battery which
control the current which is supplied to battery. This battery is removable so after fully charged it
can be removed and placed in the sprayer. In this way charging is done.Fig.15 shows 3D model of
Solar Power Panel

4. Working Principle of Solar Powered Grass Cutter:

The working principle of solar grass cutter is it has a panel arrangement at an in such a way that can
receive solar radiation with high intensity easily from the sun. The solar panel converts solar energy
into electrical energy. This electrical energy is stored in batteries by using a solar charger. The main
function of the solar charger is to increase the current from the panel while batteries are charging.
The motor is connected To batteries through connecting wires. Between these mechanical circuit
breaker switch is provided. It starts and stops the working of the motor. From this motor, power
transmits to the mechanism and this makes the blade to rotate on the shaft this makes to cut the
grass.

FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY
4.1 FABRICATION:
The vehicle frame and body structure was fabricated by using structural mild steel. The structure
was welded by using stick flux core welding (MAW) process. Welding is a materials joining
process in which two or more parts are coalesced at their contacting surfaces by a suitable
application of heat and/or pressure. Many welding processes are accomplished by heat alone, with
no pressure applied; others by a combination of heat and pressure; and still others by pressure alone,
with no external heat supplied. In some welding processes a filler material is added to facilitate
coalescence. The assemblage of parts that are joined by welding is called a weldment.

COST ESTIMATION
6.1 COST ESTIMATION:
Cost estimation may be defined as the process of forecasting the expenses that must be incurred to
manufacture a product. These expenses take into a consideration all expenditure involved in a
design & manufacturing with all related service facilities such as pattern making, tool, making as
well as a portion of the General Administrative & selling costs. Purpose of Cost Estimating
Basically the cost estimation is of two types: -
1. Material cost
2. Machining cost

6.2 Material Cost Estimation

Material cost estimation gives the total amount required to collect the raw material which has to be
processed or fabricated to desired size and functioning of the components. These materials are
divided into two categories.

a.Material for Fabrication: In this the material in obtained in raw condition and is manufactured
or processed to finished size for proper functioning of the component.
b. Standard Purchased Parts: This includes the parts which was readily available in the market
like Allen screws etc .A list in for-chard by the estimation stating the quality, size & standard parts,
the weight of raw material and cost per kg for the fabricated parts.

3. Machining Cost Estimation:

This cost estimation is an attempt to forecast the total expenses that
may include manufacturing apart from material cost. Cost estimation of manufactured parts can be
considered is judgment on and after careful consideration which includes Labour, Material and
Factory services required to produce the required part.

4. Procedure for Calculation of Material Cost:

The general procedure for calculation of material

cost estimation is: After designing a project a bill of material is prepared which is divided into two
categories.
1. Fabricated components.
Dept. of Automobile Engineering, GPT KUSHALNAGAR Page 24
FABRICATION OF GRASS CUTTER WITH SPRAYER MACHINE OPERATED BY SOLAR POWER

2. Standard purchased components.

The rates of all standard items are taken and added up. Cost of raw material purchased taken and
added up

6.5 Future Scope:-

1. Grass collector can be installed to collect the grass, instead of leaving behind it.
2. If panel used of high watt, then the machine can be used during night time for garden
lighting or room lighting, because we can accumulate more power. And at night time
however you keep it apart. So the power in the battery can be used for this intention.
3. Programming can be enhanced to make the device perform for different
operations.
4. More sensors can be incorporated for accurate results and improved automation
