VECTOR DEFINITION
A vector is an object that has both a magnitude and a direction. Geometrically, we can picture a vector as a
directed line segment, whose length is the magnitude of the vector, and with an arrow indicating the
direction. The direction of the vector is from its tail to its head. Two vectors are the same if they have the
same magnitude and direction. This means that if we take a vector and translate it to a new position
(without rotating it), then the vector we obtain at the end of this process is the same vector we had in the
beginning.
TYPES OF VECTORS
• Zero Vectors: A zero vector or null vector is a vector that has a zero magnitude and no direction. Before getting into
the detail about the zero vector, let us first recall the meaning of vectors. A vector is an object or a geometric entity
that has a magnitude (length) and direction. Now, a vector that has zero length and an undefined direction is called
a zero vector or null vector. It has all components equal to 0.
• Unit vector: Unit vectors are vectors whose magnitude is precisely 1 unit. They are very useful for different
reasons. Specifically, the unit vectors [0,1] and [1,0] can form together with any other vector. Created by Sal Khan.
• Negative Vectors: A negative vector is a vector that points in the direction opposite to the reference positive
direction. For example, if in a particular situation, we define the upward direction as the reference positive
direction, then a force →F1=30 N downwards would be a negative vector and could also be written as →F1=−30 N.
• Orthogonal Vectors: Vectors that have the same initial point are called co-initial vectors.
HOW ARE VECTORS USED IN REAL LIFE
In video games, we use vectors to represent the velocity of players, but also to control where they are aiming, or
what they can see (where they are facing). All of this with one vector. We also need a point to keep track of the
player's position at all times.
In military usage, a cannon is any piece of artillery that uses gun power or other usually explosive-based
propellants to launch a projectile. Cannons vary in caliber, range mobility rate of fire angle of fire, and firepower.
Different forms of cannon combine and balance these attributes in varying degrees depending on their intended
use on the battlefield.
In a moving car, the tire has mass It has also initial and final velocity, acceleration, gravitational reaction, friction forces, and
due to rotation it has torque. For getting the result we need vector.
Adding vectors: We can also subtract one vector from another
- First we reverse the direction of the vector we want to subtract.
- Then add them as usual.
