    Cause or Effect?
    What is a complex sentence?
    • A complex sentence is a sentence that consists of one
    independent clause and at least one dependent clause joined by
    conjunctions. An independent clause is a clause that can stand by
    itself. On the other hand, a dependent clause, although it has a
    subject and a predicate, cannot stand by itself because it does not
    express a complete idea. Therefore, a dependent clause cannot be
    a sentence unless it is attached to an independent clause.
    • A complex sentence that expresses a cause and effect relationship
    is joined by conjunctions such as so, because, after, although, as if,
    before, and since.
