ECO BAG MADE IN BANANA

PSEUDO-STEM FIBER AS
AN ALTERNATIVE TO
COMMERCIAL OR
PLASTIC BAG
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
We wanted to conduct this study because of the following, first Environmental
Impact, Plastic bags have a significant negative impact on the environment. They are non-
biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to decompose. Second, Waste Reduction,
Plastic bags contribute to the growing problem of waste accumulation particularly in
landfills and oceans. By promoting the use of eco bags made from banana pseudo stem fiber,
we can reduce the amount of plastic waste generated and potentially alleviate the strain on
waste management systems. Third, Renewable Resources, Utilizing this agricultural waste
to produce eco bags creates a value-added product form a renewable resource, promoting
sustainability and reducing reliance on non-renewable materials. Fourth, Biodegradability,
unlike plastic bags, eco bags made from banana pseudo stem fiber have the potential to be
biodegradable. Fifth, Economic Opportunities, promoting the use of eco bags made from
banana pseudo stem fiber can create economic opportunities for farmers and local
communities. Lastly, Consumer Awareness and Behavior Change, conducting study on eco
bags made from banana pseudo stem fiber can raise awareness among consumers about the
environmental impact of plastic bags. It can also encourage them to make more sustainable
choices and adopt eco-friendly alternatives, thereby fostering a positive shift in consumer
behavior. Overall, conducting this study can contribute to sustainable, waste reduction,
environmental conservation, and the promotion of a more eco-conscious society.
REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
Eco bags is a type of shopping bag which can be reused many times.
It is an alternative to single-use paper or plastic bags. It is often a tote bag
made from fabric such as canvas, natural fibers such as Jute, woven
synthetic fibers, or a thick plastic that is more durable than disposable
plastic bags. allowing multiple use. (Debbie Meyer, 2018)
According to Saraexim (2016) Reusable shopping bags are better than
plastic or paper bags. These bags are used to prevent environmental
pollution. Materials, used to produce these bags, do not harm the quality of
our surroundings. These bags are generally made of materials such as jute,
cloth, and recycled plastics, canvas or organic cotton. These reusable bags
are hygienic and easily washable. These products can be used for various
purposes.
But in this study we use banana stem because we found out that
banana fiber is a natural bast fiber which has wide range of uses in
handicraft product developments such as mat, rope and twines, but only
10% of its pseudo stem is being used for making products and remaining
waste is used as fertilizer. (Vigneswaran et al., 2015)
Eco bags not only recycle material that would be going to waste, they
also eliminate the need for single-use plastic bags that have proven to harm
the environment. Made from petroleum, plastic bags fuel extraction of fossil
resources. They also present a serious disposal problem. It takes centuries
for plastics bag to break down in nature, burning them releases poisonous
chemicals, and in oceans, plastic trash harms a number of marine species.
Non-toxic Eco bags, on the other hand, conserve the environment by
harmlessly biodegrading after numerous uses, (unfccc.int, 2019)
According to phys.org (2019), every day almost 48 million shopping
bags are used throughout the Philippines, adding up to more than 17 billion
a year. Though there are 3r's system and different activities to eliminate
plastic, yet it is still not enough to counter these plastic waste. That's why
we come up with an idea about Eco bags because this is the best alternative
to plastic bags. Conducting the experiment could have the duration of days
or weeks. This is because many trials must be done to prove that it is
effective to use banana stem fiber as an additive on making Eco bags.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What is the significant difference between

commercialized and eco-bag made of banana
pseudo stem fiber?
2. What properties of banana pseudo stem that is
capable for making eco-bag?
3. What are the advantages of using eco-bag
made of banana pseudo stem?
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Banana stem is a by product of the harvest. Banana fiber is a naturally occurring
fiber. It may be made extremely cheaply from leftover materials left in the field after
harvest. Because of their high alpha-cellulose and lignin content, banana fibers have
significant potential for papermaking and may be utilized to manufacture an eco-bag.
The chemical component of natural fibers is cellulose and lignin. These fibers have
high tensile strength and are very strong. They are biodegradable and have no negative
effects on the environment, hence they are classified as eco-friendly fiber. Global
consumption of banana fruit has rapidly surpassed the use of banana fibers in industrial
textile production over the years. One individual consumes around 11.9 kg of bananas
per year on average. However, more than a billion tons of banana tree stems are thrown
away each year since banana trees only fruit once before dying.
In my theory I believe that Banana Pseudo-Stem fibers can make a good quality
paper bag. The process leads to have a decent but cheap paper that can turn into a paper
bag that can aid the problems of farmers that throws the banana stem after the
collection of fruit. Historically, banana stems had been used as a source of fiber with
the earliest evidence around the 13th century. But its popularity was faded after other
convenient fibers such as cotton and silk were made available. (Deka, P. 2014)
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
According to Sirsilla, S. (2023) Experimental design is a
framework and procedures created to conduct experimental with a
scientific approach using two sets of variables. Herein, the first set
acts as a constant, used to measure the differences of the second set.
The research conducted an experimental study to analyze how
effective can be a Banana Pseudo-Stem fibers as Eco bag and to
discover the difference between the commercial plastic bag and eco
bags made from Banana Pseudo-Stem fibers. The purpose of this
research is to determine the Effectiveness of Banana Pseudo-Stem
fibers as an Eco bag and the difference between two variables.
MATERIALS
METHODS
• Chop up the banana bark from the banana plant into several thin pieces
less than one inch long.
• Place the banana bark in a large pot.
• Fill the pot with enough water so that bark float and then boil it in a pot
on the stove.
• Put 1 table spoon of chemical (Sodium Hydroxide) in a boiling pot of
chop banana pseudo stem.
• Stir the bark constantly for about an hour.
• Remove the pot from the stove and let it cool down for a minute.
• Use the blender to whip the bark into fine slurry.
• Ladle the bark slurry onto the screen, spreading it lightly and consistently
until it covers the whole net.
• Dry it in a hot place until it totally dry.

REEARCH METHOD
According to Dr. Mcleod, S. (2012), The experimental method
involves the manipulation of variables to research to establish cause
and effect relationship. The key features are controlled methods and the
random allocation of participants into controlled and experimental
groups. The researchers used experimental method to investigate the
effectiveness of Banana Pseudo-Stem fibers as an Eco bag compared to
commercial plastic bags to make use waste of banana pseudo-stems.
This type of method used to investigate the possibility of the study.
The researchers chose this type of method because the researchers
want to know the effectiveness of Banana Pseudo-Stem Fibers making
it as an Eco bag. The response will undergo examination and
analyzation to find out if the Eco bag is effective compared to
commercial plastics bags.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
According to Bhandari, P. (2021), A questionnaire is a list of
questions or items used to gather data from respondents about
their attitudes, experiences, or opinions. Questionnaires can be
used to collect quantitative and/or qualitative information. This
research was conducted through a survey. The researchers
provide a survey questionnaire that is considered as the main
instrument for gathering data. It accumulates data for the
researcher to achieve the information needed from the
respondents. The provided survey questionnaire must have been
answered by the participants based on their own satisfaction with
the said product. Google form is the platform that the researcher
will be used to gather data. The researchers are using an
Instrument to have reliable and relevant data or information.
DATA ANALYSIS
The researcher will employ the following statistical tool to examine
the obtained data.
1.Descriptive Statistics: Will describe the characteristics of the data.
Can calculate measures like mean, median, mode, standard
deviation, and range to understand the central tendency, variability,
and distribution of bag properties such as size, weight, durability, or
other relevant features.
2. Statistical tests like t-tests or analysis of variance (ANOVA) can
help determine if there are significant differences between the eco
bag made in banana Pseudo-Stem Fiber and commercial plastic bag.
3. Comparative Analysis: Compare the environmental impact of eco
bags made from banana pseudo stem fiber with the commercial
plastic bags.
