INTRODUCTION
What are phytoplankton?

Microscopic marine algae.

Autotrophic organisms.
Inhibits the upper sunlit
layers layer.

Foundation of aquatic
Food web.
Also known as other lung
PHYTOPLANKTON AS “BIOLOGICAL CARBON PUMP”

They help absorb co2

emissions,transferring
it from atmosphere to
the ocean .

Even small changes in

its growth affects co2
concentrations that
goes back to global
surface temperatures.
Case study
NORTHERN HEMISPHERE
Half the population of phytoplankton that existed at
the beginning of the century as already disappeared
and is continuing to decline at a rate of 1% per year
According to a 15 year old NASA report
Diatoms have declined more than 1% per year from 1982-
2012 in the
Northern Hemisphere.

Phytoplankton contains
chlorophyll such that it
forms green-blue swirl
when seen from space.

NASA’s aqua satellite took

ocean color measurements
And it showed chlorophyll
levels declining indicating a negative growth in diatoms(a
According to the report diatom declines are due to
the mixed layer(uppermost layer) of the ocean
becoming shallower. It shallowed by 1.8 meters over
over the 15 year study period.

Climate change brings more

stratified layers in summer
with decreasing mounts of
nutrients trapped inside ,
sustaining a declining
Growth of phytoplankton.
SOLUTIONS

Minimising global warming & climate change

Individually using less energy and
Reducing carbon footprint.
Decreasing microplastic pollution
by implementing strict measures

Stop overharvesting

ocean wildlife
Improve aquatic waste
CONCLUSION

Phytoplankton forms the foundation of the oceanic

food chain and accounts for almost half the production
of organic matter on Earth. Researchers have also
established that this species have been declining at an
alarming Rate and that its fluctuation levels are
believed to be closely correlated to climate changes.
If global temperature trends continue, by the end of
this century, half of the population of phytoplankton
That existed will dissappear and that will be a case of
concern as it going to have an impact up the
food chain.
MY OVERVIEW

I think that humanity needs to look beyond

trees , we need to preserve and protect our
planet’s other lung.
Marine pollution is not just affecting the aesthetics
of the ocean but planets climate too,how long can
phytoplankton save us if we don’t save them.
Phytoplankton are rapidly declining and its signs
are showing, lets not wait for another crisis that
humanity is scarcely prepared for and save our
Ocean’s invisible forest.
