Past Indefinite:
• Definition:
Simple past tense is used to
indicate those actions which
began in the past time and
got over in the past time.
Formation Of Simple Past:-

Regular Verb Irregular Verbs

Time Expression:-

When + Past
When I was a child, when I lived in Lahore, When I was Fifteen.
Affirmative Sentence Structure:

• Subject + V2 + Object.
Example:
• She ate an apple.
• He drank apple juice.
Negative Sentence Structure:

• Subject + Did + V1 + Obj


Example:
She did not eat an apple.
They did not play cricket.
Interrogative Sentence
Structure:

• Did + Sub + V1 + Object + ?


Example:
• Did they play cricket?
• Did you attend the class?

Past Continuous
Definition:
• The past continuous
tense is a verb tense used
to describe ongoing
actions or situations in
the past.
Example:
• I was eating apple.
• He was riding the cycle.
• There are two helping verb in
past continuous tenses.
Helping Verb: Was & were
Structure:
Affirmative • S + was / were + verb + ing + obj
Structure Example:
• She was driving the car.
• They were playing Cricket.
Negative Structure:
Negative • S + was / were + not + verb +
Structure ing + obj.
Example:
• They were not playing
cricket.
• Was he studying in the class?
• Interrogative Structure
• Was / were + S + verb + ing + obj + ?
• Example :
• Were they studying in the last class?

Interrogative • Was I eating an apple?

TENSE
Definition:-
• Past perfect tense is used
to talk about an action that
happened before another
action in the past.
Structure:
• Subject + had + 3rd form of verb +
object.
Structure: Example: Sarah had studied for the
test before going to bed last night.

The structure of the past perfect tense


can be learnt by analyzing how it is
used in a positive, negative,
interrogative and negative
interrogative sentences.
Structure:
Affirmative • Structure: Subject + had + 3rd
form of verb + object.
Example:
• Sarah had studied for the test
before going to bed last night.
Structure:
Negative • Subject + had + not + 3rd
form of verb + object.
Example:
• Sarah had not studied for
the test before going to
bed last night.
Structure:
Interrogative • Structure: Had + subject + 3rd
form of verb + object + ?
Example:
• Had Sarah studied for the test

Past Perfect Continuous
• The past perfect continuous
tense indicates something that
began in the past, continued in
the past, and also ended at a
defined at a point in the past.
Subject + Had been + verb (-Ing) + Object (For/Since/before)

Time Reference:

Use ''FOR'' to talk about the time duration of the action.

Example:

She had been cooking dinner for an hour before her guests arrived.

Structure: Explanation:

Subject ''She''

Past perfect auxiliary ''Had''

Main verb in ''Ing'' Form : Cooking

Time Reference : Before her guests arrived.

In the positive form, It indicates she was actively cooking for one hour
before her guests arrived.
Structure:
• Subject + Had not been + verb (-Ing) + Object
(For/Since/before)
Example:
• She had not been Jogging for very long before she got
tired.
Explanation:
• Subject ''She''
• Past Perfect Auxiliary ''Had not'' Negative form
• Main Verb in ''Ing'' form: Jogging
• Duration of the action: ''For very long"
• Time reference: "Before She got tired"
• In this sentence, it means she did not for a very long time
before she felt tired. The "had not been jogging" part tell
us it was not happening for an extended period before
she got tired.
Interogative Structure:

• Had + Subject +Been + V (-Ing) + Object + ?


Example:
• Had they been studying all night before the big
test?
Explanation:-
• Subject: "They" (The people we are asking about)
• Past perfect auxiliary : "Had" (Indicating it's in the
past perfect continuous Tense).
• Main verb in –ing form : "Studying"
• Duration of the action: "All night"
• Time Reference: "Before the big test"

• She sang a song.
• They don't played Football.
• Did He cooked dinner.
• Don't we watch a movie?
