Signs of Poor Problem Definition
• Problems return as solutions are not effective.
• Extensive waste of time and resources in
research
• Difficulty in research design

Questions To Ask Stakeholders:
1. What decisions will be made on the basis of this study?
2. How will research influence these decisions? Suppose the research reveals X. What
decision will be made? Suppose the study reveals Y? What decision will be made? If X and Y
are relative opposites, and the planned decision is the same in the face of either outcome,
then perhaps this research is not useful, required, or relevant in the circumstances.
5. Why not just go ahead and make a decision based on sound business judgment and
everything we currently know instead of bothering to conduct marketing research at all?

Research Question(s)
• Research questions:
– Are related to the objective
– If objective is unclear we will not be able to formulate research questions
• Example:
– What are the factors that affect the perceived waiting experience of airline
passengers?
– To what extent do these factors affect the perception of waiting times?
– What are the affective consequences of waiting ?
– How does affect mediate the relationship between waiting and service
evaluations?
– How do situational variables (such as filled time) influence customer reactions to
the waiting experience?
• Example:
– To determine factors that increase employee commitment to the
organization;
