Drugs in the Philippines

Drug use and abuse is a social and health concern. Poverty has
become an increasing cause for in involvement in the illegal drug trade.
Foreign drug syndicates take advantage and exploit the poor and use
promises “easy money to entice people to serve as couriers and
runners. According to the statistics, the most common type of
substance prone to abuse among Filipinos are:

Metamphetamine Hyrdrochloride (Shabu)


Cannabis (Marijuana)
Inhalants (Contact Cement Adhesive)
Common concepts in Drug Education

1. DRUGS

-are chemical substances that bring about physical, emotional,


or behavioral change in a person taking it.
-any substance other than food or water that is intended to be
taken or administered for the purpose of altering, sustaining, or
controlling the recipients physical mental and emotional state.
2. DRUGS OF ABUSE

-the use of any chemical substance, licit or illicity,


resulting to individual’s physical, mental, or social
impairment.

3. DRUG DEPENDENCE

- Is a cluster of physiological, behavioral, and


cognitive phenomena of varia
- ble intensity in which the use of drug takes on high
priority thereby, creating a strong desire to take the
substance.
4. DRUG MISUSE

- the use of a substance inconsistent with


the prescribed dosage or frequency of use.

5. DRUG ABUSE
-the use of a substance for non-medical
purposes which would often lead to serious
health problems.
6. DRUG TOLERANCE

- is the condition of the body to adapt to the effects of


substances thus requiring an even larger amount of substance
to experience the same physiological and mental effect
experienced when taking the smaller dosage.

7. DRUG ADDICTION
-is a complex neurobiological disease that requires
integrated treatment of the mind, body and spirit.
CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS
A. ACCORDING TO PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECTS

1. STIMULANTS
-also known as “Uppers”. Any group of drugs that
excite the central nervous system. It increases alertness,
alleviate fatigue, reduce hunger, and provide a feeling of
well-being.

Examples of Stimulants:
-Cocaine
-Methamphetamine (Shabu)
2. DEPRESSANTS
-also known as “downers” or “barbs”. These are drugs that
decreases the activity of any bodily function.
Examples:
-Sedatives
-Sleeping Pills
-Tranquilizers

3. HALLUCINOGENS
-also called as “psychedelics”. These are natural or synthetic
psychoactive drugs that produce marked distortion of the senses and
changes in perception.
Examples: Ecstacy, Ketamine
4. SEDATIVES
-drugs which may reduce anxiety and excitement.
Examples: Barbiturates, Alcohol, Tranquilizers

5. NARCOTICS
-drugs that relieve pain and often induce sleep.
Examples: Opium, Morphine, Codeine, Heroin
B. ACCORDING TO ITS ORIGIN

=> Natural- anything that comes from


nature

=> Synthetic- anything that is produced


artificially or processes in the laboratory.
EFFECTS OF USING
DRUGS
A. IMMEDIATE EFFECTS
ÞSmelly breath, hair, and clothes;
ÞStained teeth and fingers;
ÞIncrease in heart rate, breathing, and blood
pressure
ÞReduced blood supply to extremities
ÞStimulated central nervous system
ÞOther health risks
B. LONG-TERM EFFECTS

Sickness;
 Heart Attack;
 Cancer;
 Bronchitis and Emphysema
 Ulcers; and
 Infertility
Factors Influencing Substance Use and
Abuse

* Lack of parental supervision and support;


* Strong peer pressure and curiosity;
* Intense feelings of pleasure;
*Relief from Stress, anxiety, and depression; and
* Increased physical and cognitive performance
How to prevent Drug Abuse?
• Maintain good and physical mental health;
• Use drugs properly under medical advice;
• Understand yourself and learn to accept yourself for what you are;
• Develop your potentials Engage in wholesome, productive, and fulfilling
activities;
• Learn to relate effectively and communicate your problems freely;
• Learn to cope with your problems and other stressors without the use of
drugs.
• Seek professional help if you feel you cannot cope with your problems.
• Develop strong moral and spiritual foundations.
Law against Drug Abuse in the Philippines
Republic Act No. 9165, otherwise known as
“Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of
2002”
Policy of the State

Safeguard the integrity of its territory and the well-being


of its citizenry particularly the youth from the harmful
effects of dangerous drugs on their physical and mental
well-being and to defend the same against acts or
omissions detrimental to their development and
preservation. (Section 2, RA 9165)
UNLAWFUL ACTS PENALIZED UNDER
R.A. NO. 9165
1. Sale, Trading, Administration, Dispensation, Delivery, Distribution & Transportation of
Dangerous Drugs &/or Controlled Precursors and Essential Chemicals
2. Maintenance of a Den, Dive, or Resort Den, Dive, or Resort- A place where any
dangerous drugs and/or controlled precursor and essential chemical is administered,
delivered, stored for illegal purposes.
3. Possession of Equipment Instrument, Apparatus, and other Paraphernalia for Dangerous
Drugs
4. Use of Dangerous Drugs
5. Cultivation or Culture of Plants Classified as Dangerous Drugs or are Sources thereof
6. Maintenance and Keeping of Original Records of Transactions on Dangerous Drugs;
7. Unnecessary Prescription of Dangerous Drugs;
8. Unlawful Prescription of Dangerous Drugs;
9. Issuance of False or Fraudulent Drug Test Results
10. Attempt or Conspiracy
