SYAIR
• traditional Malay poetry
• made up of four-line stanzas or quantrains.
• It can be a narrative poem, a didactic poem, a
poem used to convey ideas on religion or
philosophy, or even describe a historical event.

• It is a Malay oral poetic poem used to express
intricate ideas and emotions.
• Consists of even-numbered lines and based on
ABAB rhyming schemes.
• Pantun Dua Kerat - shortest pantun consists of 2
lines.
• Pantun Enam Belas Kerat - longest pantun
consists of 16 lines.

• Pembayang or Sampiran - first part or the
prefatory statement
• Maksud or Isi - second or closing part

GURINDAM
• brief aphorisms
• Is a type of irregular verse forms of traditional
Malay poetry.
• Combination of two clauses where the relative
clause forms a line and is connected to the
second line or the main clause.
• No limit on the number of words per line and
neither the rhythm per line is fixed.

• Syarat (protasis) - first line of gurindam, usually
states a condition
• Jawab (apodosis) - second line, it provides the
answer.

HIKAYAT
• Stories, fairy-tales, animal fables and chronicles.
• It is an Arabic word that literally translates to
“stories”

BABAD
• Histories and chronicles
• Written in metrical form and is governed by a set of strict
conventions.
• “Babad” means “a story of past events” or “text on the clearing of
the story about the origin of this or that (land) settlement”.
