Synopsis of “The Intern”
• "The Intern" is a heartwarming comedy-drama film directed by Nancy Meyers. The story
revolves around 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker, played by Robert De Niro, who becomes
an intern at an e-commerce fashion company called About the Fit.
• Ben, feeling unfulfilled during his retirement, applies for the senior intern program and is
accepted by the company's young and ambitious CEO, Jules Ostin, portrayed by Anne
Hathaway. Despite initial scepticism from Jules and some of her colleagues, Ben quickly
proves himself to be a valuable asset with his exceptional work ethic, experience, and wise
counsel.
• As Ben becomes increasingly involved in the company's operations, he develops an unlikely
friendship with Jules. Ben serves as a mentor and confidant to Jules, offering guidance and
support as she grapples with the challenges of managing a rapidly growing business while also
juggling her personal life. In turn, Jules helps Ben navigate the intricacies of the modern
workplace and encourages him to embrace new experiences.
• The film explores various themes, including inter-generational dynamics, the value of
experience and wisdom, work-life balance, and the importance of genuine connections. Ben's
presence challenges ageism and stereotypes about older individuals in the workplace,
highlighting the potential for growth and mutual learning across generations.
• As the story progresses, Jules faces professional and personal setbacks, leading to moments of
self-reflection and transformation. Through their friendship, Ben and Jules learn from each
other, leading to personal and professional growth for both characters.
• "The Intern" offers a delightful blend of humour, poignant moments, and heartfelt
interactions, ultimately celebrating the power of friendship, empathy, and the recognition that
age should not limit one's potential to make meaningful contributions to the world.
