Venus
Venus is toone of the four terrestrial planets in the Solar System, meaning that it is a
rocky body like Earth. It is similar to Earth in size and mass and is often described as
Earth's "sister" or "twin". Venus is close to spherical due to its slow rotation.
Venus is the second planet from the Sun.
Venus is a bit smaller than Earth. ...
On Venus, the Sun would rise in the west and set in the
east, because Venus spins backward compared to
Earth.
Except for Earth, Venus has by far the fewest impact
craters of any rocky planet.
What can people do on Venus?
Most astronomers feel that it would be impossible
for life to exist on Venus. Today, Venus is a very
hostile place. It is a very dry planet with no
evidence of water, its surface temperature is hot
enough to melt lead, and its atmosphere is so thick
that the air pressure on its surface is over 90 times
that on Earth.
Orbital period: 225 days
Length of day: 243d 0h 0m 5,832 hours! A day
Distance from Sun: 108.2 million km
Gravity: 8.87 m/s²
Radius: 6,051.8 km
Surface area: 460.2 million km²
Is Venus a star
Many called it the
evening star. And, of
course, Venus isn't a star.
It's the next planet inward
from Earth. Venus goes
between us and the sun
about every 19 months.
Why can't we see Venus through a
telescope?
Venus. Venus can be too bright for a
telescope when the sky is dark. It is
generally better to look at twilight
or even in the day. No surface
details can be seen but through a
small telescope Venus can be easily
seen to have phases, like the Moon.
We know that large asteroids have
hit Earth during its history (one of
the theories as to how the Moon
formed), so it seems plausible
that, during the early stages of the
Solar System, Venus could have
been hit by a celestial object similar
in size to itself that sent it spinning
in the opposite direction.
Venus is often referred to as our sister planet because of similarities
in size, mass, density and volume. It is believed that both planets share a
common origin forming at the same time out of a condensing nebulosity
around 4.5 billion years ago. Venus is often referred to as our sister
