INTRODUCTION
*Social media, a form of mass media communications on the Internet (such as
on websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users share
information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos). Social
networking and social media are overlapping concepts, but social networking is
usually understood as users building communities among themselves while social
media is more about using social networking sites and related platforms to build an
audience
WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA ?
Social media refers to a variety of technologies that facilitate the sharing of ideas and
information among their users. From Facebook and Instagram to X platform (formerly
Twitter) and YouTube, more than 4.7 billion people use social media, equal to roughly
60% of the world's population.1 In early 2023, 94.8% of users accessed chat and
messaging apps and websites, followed closely by social platforms, with 94.6% of
users.
WHY SOCIAL MEDIA IS IMPORTANT IN
OUR LIFE ?
 Share life updates and express our feelings openly
 Connect with people, including family and friends
 Build a professional network
 Stay connected with the world around us
 Provide outlets for self-expression
 Share our perspectives effectively
For most of us, social media is an important part of our lives. Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, WhatsApp, choose your favorite. Also, there is no denying that our days
are incomplete without these sites. In the year gone by, the importance of social media
was even more appreciated.
Since the year 2020 it has been quite a different life and unlike any of the previous
years in many aspects. With countries going under lockdown for months; our needs,
priorities, and lifestyle too had taken a shift. The way we earn, spend, learn, and even
socialize was unlike what we did before 2020. Since we couldn’t move out of our
homes for days or even months, internet and social media sites were our only resort. It
was during this time that we realized the real importance of social media and how
impactful it is on our lives
HOW SOCIAL MEDIA WORKS?
 Since social media covers so many different types of websites and applications, the function
of these tools also varies. However, most social media sites start with a user creating a
profile, usually by providing a name and e-mail address. When a profile has been created,
users can create and share content. For example, an Instagram user with a new account can
take a picture and share it with the caption on their profile.
 When a profile has been created, users can create and share content. For example, an
Instagram user with a new account can take a picture and share it with the caption on their
profile. In addition to creating content for your profile, social media users can find other users
whose content they want to follow or comment on. Depending on the type of social media
Social media often uses “feeds” to allow users to scroll through content. Social media
companies use algorithms that are based on user profile data to determine the content
that appears and the order in which it appears. Feeds will include content from
“followed” users, as well as from entities that pay to promote their content.
