The Recipe For Our

Thought Life
Philippians 4:4-8
Philippians 4:4-8
4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say,
Rejoice.

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men.

The Lord is at hand.

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by

prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all

understanding, shall keep your hearts and
minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true,

whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever
things are just, whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever
things are of good report; if there be any
virtue, and if there be any praise, think on
these things.
INTRODUCTION
• Any recipe you find in a cookbook or elsewhere
starts with ingredients.

• Many also have other preparing instructions,

such as preheating an oven or greasing a baking
pan.

• Having a good thought life in this day when so

many bombarding influences exist is not easy
thing to accomplish.

• In these verses, Paul gives some preparatory

instructions for developing our thought life—the
goal being, as he says in chapter 2, to have “this
mind in you which was in Christ Jesus.”
Preparation For The Mind
Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and
again I say, Rejoice. (v4)

A. Praise
 In Christ
 In consistency
Let your moderation be known
unto all men. The Lord is at
hand.. (v5)

B. Proclamation
• Public
• Specific
Be careful for nothing; but in every
thing by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests
be made known unto God. (V6)

C. Prayer
• Without anxiety
• Prayer
• Supplication
• Requests
• Thanksgiving
And the peace of God, which
passeth all understanding, shall
keep your hearts and minds
through Christ Jesus. (V7)

D. Promise
• The peace of God (differing from peace with God)
• The passing of understanding
• The protection of our hearts and minds
•What Paul is leading up to in this
section is simple:
•If we make the right
preparations for this recipe for
our thought life, we will have a
peace no one can understand,
and the protection of our minds
will come through Christ.
•With this preparation, then, it
will not be nearly as difficult to
“think on these things” which
Paul will go into next.
Philippians 4: 8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things
are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if
there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
PURITY OF
THINGS
THAT ARE TRUE
Philippians 4:8
• “Whatsoever things are…” introduces
several areas of thought which we are
going to consider one by one.

• As we do, we’re going to see connections

with the fruit of the Spirit and the armor
of God. And again, we are going to see
there is an inspired, Divine order in this
verse.

• We started the armor of God with the

loins of truth.

• Things that are TRUE, then, must by

necessity begin this list of the recipe for
our thought life.
A. Truth is in a Person (John 14:6)
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way,
the truth
, and the life: no man cometh unto the Fat
her, but by me.
• Jesus said, “I am the truth.” He did not
say, “I am a truth.” He did not say, “I
know the truth.”
• Pilate asked him the most rhetorical
question ever when he said, “What is
truth?” for he was looking right at the
answer to his question.
• Jesus promised that when we know the
truth—speaking of Him—the truth will
make us free (John 8:32).
B. Truth is in a provision (John 17:17)—it is in God’s word
(Psalms 12:6,7)
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy wor
d is truth.
John 17:17
The words of the LORD are pure words:
as silver tried in a furnace of earth, pu
rified seven times.
Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou sh
alt preserve them from this generation
for ever.
Psalms 12:6,7

• It is pure.
• It is preserved.
• It is to be passed on.
C. Truth is precious (Psa 119:72, 127, 162)
Psalms 119:72
“The law of thy mouth is better unto me
than thousands of gold and silver.”

Psalms 119:162
“I rejoice at thy word, as one that
findeth great spoil.”

• it is also often referred to as

wisdom, especially in Proverbs.
D. Truth is to be protected and is for protection (Prv 23:23)
Proverbs 23:23
“Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom,
and instruction, and understanding.”

• Protected by our speech (Prv

12:19, Zec 8:16, Eph 4:25)
• Presented by our sincerity (Jsh
24:14, Tit 2:7)
• Protection in our spiritual battle
(Eph 6:14)
E. Truth can be perverted to look like truth (deceit)

• In doctrine (Gal 1:6, 7)

• In display (2Co 11:14, 15)
• Toward damnation (2Th 2:1-
12)
•When we speak of a purity of
things that are true, then, we are
speaking of whatever has no
error, deception, or misleading
“double entendres.”
•We are speaking of “rightly
dividing the word of truth” as
spoken about in 2 Timothy 2:15.
•This requires more than just
reading it, but realizing what it is
really saying, not only in context,
but in consistency with the entire
word of God.
