THE SOLAR

SYSTEM
LESSON OBJECTIVES

(C) Identify and describe the eight planets in the

solar system

(C) Compare the planets of the solar system

(A) Analyze the concept of the Sun as the central

star and source of light and energy

(P) Dramatize the solar system in a roleplay activity

showing the relative sizes of the planets, and their
relative distances or correct order from the Sun.
LET’S SING A SONG!

THE PLANETS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Lyrics:

Mercury, Venus, and Earth

Mars, Jupiter, Saturn
Uranus, and Neptune, are the planets!
THE SOLAR
SYSTEM
THE SOLAR SYSTEM
A solar system is a collection of planets, moons,
asteroids, comets, and other extraterrestrial
objects that includes one or more suns. There are
eight planets and one sun in our solar system.
THE

SUN
“The Heart of the Solar System”
SUN
• The Sun is the only star in our Solar System
• The Sun is much bigger than all the planets
combined.
• The gravity of the Sun holds the solar system
together, which also keeps all of the planets
and debris in their orbits.
• Seasons, ocean currents, weather,
temperature, radiation belts, and auroras are
all influenced by the Sun and Earth's
relationship and interactions.
THE PLANET
MERCURY

“The Swiftest Planet”

MERCURY
• Mercury is the smallest planet in our
solar system.
• Mercury is the nearest planet to the
Sun.
• There are tens of thousands of impact
craters all throughout Mercury's
surface.
• With a speed of 88 Earth days,
Mercury is the planet that orbits the
Sun the fastest.
THE PLANET
VENUS

“Earth’s Superheated Twin Sister”

VENUS
• Venus is the hottest planet and the
sixth-largest planet in our solar system.
• Venus is the second planet from the
Sun.
• Venus features rifts and plains formed
by volcanic activity.
• Venus rotates backward and has a day
that is longer than its year.
THE PLANET
EARTH

“The Ever-Evolving Planet”

EARTH
• Earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar
system.
• Earth is the third planet from the Sun.
• The only proven home of life in the known
universe is Earth.
• Earth is the only one whose surface is known
to contain liquid water.
• The Earth has land, oceans, and an
atmosphere with air we can breathe.
• Every 365.25 days, Earth completes one orbit
of the sun.
THE PLANET
MARS

“The Red Planet”

MARS
• The seventh largest planet is Mars.
• Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun.
• Winds, collisions, crustal movement,
and volcanoes have all changed the
surface of Mars.
• Nearly two Earth years make up a Mars
year.
THE PLANET
JUPITER

“King of the Planets”

JUPITER
• Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar
system.
• Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun.
• For hundreds of years, a massive storm larger
than Earth has raged over Jupiter, known as
the Great Red Spot.
• Jupiter is a gas giant and lacks a solid
surface.
• Jupiter has a day of only ten Earth hours and
a year of twelve Earth years.
THE PLANET
SATURN

“Jewel of the Solar System”

SATURN
• Saturn is the second-largest planet in
the solar system.
• Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun.
• With its brilliant system of ice rings,
Saturn stands out from the other
planets.
• There might be a small core to this gas-
giant planet.
• A full orbit around the Sun takes 29
Earth years for Saturn.
THE PLANET
URANUS

“The Original Ice Giant”

URANUS
• Uranus is the third largest planet in our
solar system.
• Uranus is the seventh planet from the
Sun.
• Most of Uranus is a rocky core
surrounded by a mass of "icy" fluid.
• Uranus's orbit around the Sun takes 84
Earth years.
THE PLANET
NEPTUNE

“The Blue Giant of the Solar System”

NEPTUNE
• Neptune is the fourth largest planet in
our solar system.
• Neptune is the farthest planet from the
Sun.
• Among the giant planets, Neptune has
the highest density.
• Neptune orbits the Sun every 165 Earth
years.
