Project Background
It is developed by Pakistan Water and Power
Development Authority (Wapda), as a key component of
the company's Water Vision 2025.

Project Objectives
 Hydropower Generation:
 The dam is designed to generate a substantial amount of electricity,
estimated between 4,500 to 4,800 megawatts. This could significantly
contribute to Pakistan's energy needs.
 Water Storage:
 The reservoir formed by the dam has a massive storage capacity, intended
to regulate the flow of the Indus River. This control helps manage water
scarcity during dry seasons and prevents flooding during heavy rains.
 Agriculture:
 The stored water from the dam can be used for irrigation purposes,
benefitting agriculture in the surrounding areas. This could potentially
improve crop yields and support agricultural sustainability.
 Flood Control:
 One of the crucial aspects of the dam is its ability to control floods in the
Indus Basin, a region prone to flooding during monsoon seasons. The
dam can regulate the flow of water, reducing the risk of devastating floods
downstream.
Cost:
The water and resources ministry and Wapda submit to
the Planning Commission the revised PC-1 of the project
for cost overruns for approval by CDWP and ECNEC.
Back in 2014, the project was approved with a cost of
PKR 586 billion.
This cost could fluctuate due to various factors,
including inflation, delays, or changes in project scope.
Capacity:
The dam is expected to have a total storage capacity of
about 8.1 million acre-feet and generate approximately
4,500 to 4,800 megawatts of electricity.
Timeline:
Construction timelines for such large projects are often
extended due to the complexity involved. The project
was initially projected to be completed in around 9
years, but this can be subject to changes based on
various factors.
Height and Size:
The dam's height was projected to be around 272 meters
(892 feet), making it one of the tallest dams in the
world. Its reservoir was estimated to cover an area of
around 110 square kilometers.
Project Challenges and Considerations:
 Geopolitical and Funding Challenges:
 Large infrastructure projects often face geopolitical challenges. The
Diamer-Bhasha Dam's funding and financial structure have been
subject to negotiations, including seeking international financing
or investments.
 Security Threats:
 The area where Dasu Dam is being constructed has faced security
challenges due to its proximity to regions known for insurgent
activities. Security threats have led to disruptions in construction
activities.
 Incidents and Attacks:
 The project witnessed unfortunate incidents, including attacks on
workers and contractors. For instance, in July 2021, a bus carrying
workers was hit by a blast, resulting in casualties. Such incidents
create safety concerns and affect the morale of the workforce.
Geological Challenges:
The construction site's geological conditions, including
the rugged terrain and seismic activity in the region,
posed challenges for engineering and construction work.
Stability concerns and unforeseen geological conditions
can impact the construction schedule and costs.
Environmental Impact:
Large-scale construction projects like dams have
environmental consequences. Ensuring compliance with
environmental regulations, managing waste disposal,
and mitigating the project's impact on the local
ecosystem are critical aspects that require attention.
Health and Safety
 Reviewed method statements submitted by the contractors.
 Daily site visits and monitoring of contractor’s activities.
 Preparation of instruction letters to the contractor.
 Prepared EHS Checklists
 Conduct monthly EHS Patrol to construction sites, camps
 Conducted EHS Trainings
 Implementation of occupational health and safety plan at site
 Review of Health and safety management plan prepared by MW-01
and MW-02 Contractor and shared comments with contractor.
 Supervision of safety arrangements at site during blasting activity
 Reviewed emergency response plan of KKH-01 and RAR-01
contractors
