Pattern

MAKING

Assistant Professor
PATTERN
 A pattern is a template from which part of a garment is
traced onto the fabric before being cut out and
assembled; patterns are usually made of paper.
MARKER
MAKING
MARKER
 Marker is an ultra thin paper where need to gather all
the necessary pattern pieces for all sizes of a
particular style of a garments item.
MARKER MAKING
 Marker making is the process of determining
the most efficient layout of pattern pieces for a
specified style.
 It is one of the essential steps before cutting

during large quantity of garments production.

 It is mentionable that bulk quantities of
garment cannot be cut without marker.
POINTS TO BE CONSIDERED
BEFORE MARKER MAKING
 Fabric width must be higher than marker width (1/2
inch).
 Fabric length must be greater than marker length.
 Length of the cutting table.
 Production planning.
 When pattern pieces are laid down on a piece of cloth,
the grain line should be parallel to the line of the warp in
the woven fabric and wale in the knitted fabric.
PURPOSE
 The main reason to make marker planning is to
reduce fabric wastage that will ultimately reduce
total cost of a garment item.
 Another reason of marker is to place it onto the

fabric layer and provide right direction for

cutting.
METHODS OF MARKER
MAKING
There are mainly two methods for marker
making followed in apparel industry.
 Manual marker planning method
o Marker planning with full size pattern
o Marker planning with miniaturized pattern
 Computerized marker planning
◦ Automatic marker making
◦ Interactive marker making
1. MANUAL METHOD
 It is one of the oldest, traditional and typical method used for marker
making in the garments industry. It can be done by two ways:
• Marker planning with full size pattern: According to the
standard measurements, full size patterns are in full dimensions
here. Usually, it is made for production purpose. All the patterns are
in full dimension to put on the fabric layer and then those patterns
are marked with chalk by changing different directions to minimize
fabric expenditure. This method is suitable for reducing the marker
length.
• Marker planning with miniaturized pattern: In this method full
size patterns are reduced to 1/5 of its part using pantograph. These
are made by plastic sheet or thick board paper. The marker planning
is done by using these miniaturized patterns. Usually, it is made to
plan or schedule and learns or study i.e. for planning and learning
purposes.
FEATURES OF MANUAL
MARKING METHOD
 Time consuming process and requires a great deal
of space.
Errors and inconsistencies may occur in grain
variation, poor line definition, placement and
alignment of pieces and slip of the pieces.
Accuracy of a manually made marker depends on
the skill of the individual who laid out the marker
and traced it.
2. COMPUTERIZED MARKER
PLANNING
 Computerized marker making is more accurate and
provides the greatest opportunity for pattern
manipulation, marker efficiency, reuse of previously
made markers, and shortest response time.
 Production patterns may be developed on the

computer and/or digitized or scanned into the

computer.
 Once markers have been planned and stored, they

can be printed or recalled and modified for new

cutting orders.
2. A. AUTOMATIC MARKER
MAKING
 It is one of the easiest and efficient processes of marker
making.
 Several integrated software’s like GGT, Lectra, Gemini

are useful to make a computerized marker.

 It Just only need two minutes to make an automatic

marker.
 The computer makes the marker itself according to the

command given by the operator.

 It is more competent and useful than interactive marker

making method.
2. B. INTERACTIVE MARKER
MAKING
 It is another marker making process where marker man
decorates all the pattern pieces directly.
 By this process, all the pattern pieces are placed at the

top of the screen of a computer in the miniature form.

 Then marker man can drag and drape into the pre-

determined place through mouse pointer.

 Interactive marker making method mainly used to make

shading marker or if found any serious fault in fabric.

 It is less efficient and more time is required than

automatic marker making method.
