INTRODUCTION

• Agricultural development has its roots in technology generation and its

transfer to the farmers. Technology generation is the sole responsibility of the
research system which has to generate relevant technology benefitting to the
purpose for which the research has been conducted as well as the intended
Agro-climatic situation which the developed technology is meant for.

• Research findings in shape of recommendations have to be taken to the

farming community by the transfer of technology/extension system.
• Thus, research is based on the ground level field problems of farmers while
extension and transfer of knowledge cannot be enable without a sound
scientific knowledge-base.

• Research and extension rather research and development are dependent on

each other.

• While agricultural/rural development is the objective; extension

education/transfer of technology (TOT) is the means to achieve the objective.
SALIENT DIMENSIONS OF RESEARCH IN AGRICULTURE

(a) Genetics and plant breeding research

(b) Agronomical research  Farm implements and

(c) Soil science research machineries
 Farm power
(d) Research in water management
 Water conservation
(e) Research in the area of plant protection
 Irrigation and drainage system
(f) Agricultural engineering research
 Post-harvest technology and
RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS IN INDIA IN AGRICULTURE
AND ALLIED FIELDS

• Research responsibilities in agriculture and allied fields are mainly with

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) through its institutes,
project directorates, co-ordinated schemes, research stations, national
research centres, national bureau, adhoc research projects, centres of
excellence etc. and through the state agricultural universities.
BROAD CATEGORIES OF RESEARCH PROJECTS

• Research Projects under non-plan

• Research Projects under plan grant

• All India Co-ordinated Research Projects (AICRP)

• National Agricultural Research Projects (NARP) now under non-plan/plan budget of the State
Government

• National Agricultural Technology Projects (NATP) funded by the World Bank through ICAR

• Adhoc Projects funded by ICAR under cess fund

• Short-term Research Projects like Adhoc Projects

• Long-term Research Projects like AICRP

RESEARCH-EXTENSION/TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY (TOT)
LINKAGES
Programmes launched by the ICAR and SAUs

• Institute-Village-Linkage Programme (IVLP)

• On-farm test / trials

• Krishi Vigyan Kendras

• Zonal Research and Extension Advisory Committee (ZREAC) 

• Farm Science Mela / Farmers’ Fair / Kisan Mela etc. at Research Institutes
/ SAUs where Farmers, Extension Agency and Scientists meet, interact,
get feedback and learn from each other
• Field Day, Diagnostic Team field visit
• Research and Extension Education Councils of SAUs in which there
are representatives of line extension departments and farmers and
university scientists
• Kharif and Rabi Workshops organized by the State Department of
Agriculture in which Agricultural Scientists, Extension Staff and
farmers participate
• Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) under NATP
• State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute
under NATP (SAMETI) 
• Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) under NATP.
ROLE AND FUNCTIONING OF KRISHI VIGYAN
KENDRA

• KVK has a farm of about 20 hectares (in some cases less than 20 hectares
also) meant for imparting practical experiences learning by doing.

• The training programmes are on different aspects of Agricultural Sciences /

Farming System i.e. Agriculture, Horticulture, Dairying, Poultry, Mushroom
Culture, Fisheries, Agriculture Engineering, and Home Science as per
relevance for the district.
