★ 定义:定语从句在句中起定语作用,用来
修饰名词或代词,有时也可修饰一个句子。被
定语从句修饰的名词或代词称为先行词。
结构:先行词 + 关系代词 + 句子
关系代词:
★who/whom
who 和 whom 引导定语从句,先行词通常指人。 who 在从句中作主语、宾
语, whom 在从句中作宾语。作宾语时, who 和 whom 通常可省略。如:
The girl who often helps me with my Chinese is from
China.
经常在中文方面帮助我的那个女孩来自中国。
Did you know the boy (who/whom) I met
yesterday? 你认识我昨天遇到的那个男孩吗 ?
★which
which 引导定语从句,先行词通常指物。
which 在从句中作主语或宾语。作宾语时, which 通常可省略。如:
The train which has just left is for Shenzhen.
刚开走的火车是驶往深圳的。
This is the book (which) you need for the exam.
这是你考试所需要的那本书。
★that
that 引导定语从句,先行词可以指人,也可以指物。指人时, that 相当于 who ;
指物时, that 相当于 which 。如:
The sick man (that) Mary is looking after is her father.
玛丽正在照顾的病人是她的父亲。
Can you lend me the novel (that) you talked about the
other day?
你可以把你几天前说的那本小说借给我吗 ?
(1) 当关系代词前有介词时,根据先行词是人还是物,只能用 whom 或 which 。
如: We'll go to hear the famous singer about whom we
often talk.
我们将去听那位我们经常谈论的著名歌手演唱。
Tomorrow I'll bring here the magazine for which you
asked. 明天我会给你带来你要的那本杂志。
(2) 定语从句中遇到以下情况时,关系代词通常用 that:
★ 当先行词是是
everything 、 anything 、 something 、 nothing 时。如: I'd
better remember everything that the teacher told me. 我
最好记住老师告诉我的一切。
★ 当先行词被 the very 、 the only 、 the last 、 the first ,或被形
容词最高级修饰时。如: This is the best way that I can think of.
这是我能想到的最好的办法。
★ 当先行词既有人又有物时。如: The boy and the dog that are in
the picture are very lovely.
