Eight years ago, stars avoided Trump’s inauguration. This time it’s different

Lindsey Bahr, The Associated Press 6 minute read Yesterday at 11:12 PM CST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Carrie Underwood might not be Beyoncé or Garth Brooks in the celebrity superstar ecosystem. But the singer’s participation in President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration is nevertheless a sign of the changing tides, where mainstream entertainers, from Nelly to The Village People are more publicly and more enthusiastically associating with the new administration.

Eight years ago, Trump reportedly struggled to enlist stars to be part of the swearing-in and the various glitzy balls that follow. The concurrent protest marches around the nation had more famous entertainers than the swearing-in, which stood in stark contrast to someone like Barack Obama, whose second inaugural ceremony had performances from Beyoncé, James Taylor and Kelly Clarkson and a series of starry onlookers.

There were always some celebrity Trump supporters, like Kid Rock, Hulk Hogan, Jon Voight, Rosanne Barr, Mike Tyson, Sylvester Stallone and Dennis Rodman, to name a few. But Trump’s victory this time around was decisive and while Hollywood may always skew largely liberal, the slate of names participating in his inauguration weekend events has improved.

Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus, The Village People and Lee Greenwood all performed at a MAGA style rally Sunday. Those performing at inaugural balls include the rapper Nelly, country music band Rascal Flatts, country singer Jason Aldean and singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw.

What Melania Trump wore to the inauguration – including the hat

Beatrice Dupuy, The Associated Press 3 minute read 2:19 PM CST

While red baseball caps have become synonymous with President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump made her own millinery-related fashion statement, sporting a navy wide-brimmed hat by an American designer on Inauguration Day.

The hat designed by Eric Javits shielded the first lady’s eyes as her husband was sworn in Monday for the second time. Javits said dressing the first lady has been one of the greatest honors of his career.

“My art background gave me an edge in bringing harmony and balance to the face by creating hat shapes that would flatter and enhance every kind of face,” he said in a statement. “In this specific case that was not difficult to do, in that Mrs. Trump is blessed with great bone structure, beauty and a wonderful sense of style.”

The hat made its mark throughout the inauguration ceremony: As Trump went to kiss his wife after entering the Capitol Rotunda, the hat left only room for an air kiss. Even now-former President Joe Biden had to navigate around the hat while trying to talk to her husband on the other side.

‘Nothing to hide’: Sum 41 singer says he’s ready to defend memoir in court after legal notices filed

David Friend, The Canadian Press 5 minute read 2:56 PM CST

TORONTO - Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley says he's prepared to battle in Ontario court with his former manager over their sexual relationship, which he alleges took advantage of him as a rising young musician.

The allegations against Greig Nori surfaced last fall in Whibley's memoir where he wrote that his one-time manager pressured him into a relationship.

Nori, frontman of 1990s rock band Treble Charger, calls Whibley’s claims "a lie," saying their relationship was consensual, shared between two adults, and that Whibley pursued him.

None of the accusations have been tested in court.

Symbol of unity? Inauguration news coverage illustrates differences that pull country apart

David Bauder, The Associated Press 6 minute read 3:32 PM CST

A presidential inauguration is traditionally a symbol of the traditions that bind Americans together. Mainstream media coverage of the event on Monday provided many reminders of what keeps people apart.

On the Martin Luther King Day holiday, news organizations offered wall-to-wall coverage of President Donald Trump's second inaugural, an event held largely indoors in Washington because of frigid temperatures.

In many respects, it was a return to normal after Trump did not attend successor Joe Biden's swearing in four years ago. The ceremony offered images of bipartisanship that “the country to some extent is hungry for,” said NBC News' Kristen Welker.

A few hours later, historian Jon Meacham was on the same network declaring that Trump had given “the most partisan inaugural that I think I know of in American history.” He said he was stunned that religious figures called to deliver invocations seemed to take sides as well. “When religion is used to divide and exalt one side over the other, we are in a place where we need to take care,” Meacham said.

Teen pleads guilty to murder in stabbings at Taylor Swift-themed dance class in England

Brian Melley, The Associated Press 6 minute read Updated: 2:03 PM CST

LONDON (AP) — A British teen pleaded guilty Monday to murdering three girls and attempting to kill 10 other people in what a prosecutor said was a “meticulously planned” stabbing rampage at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in England last summer.

The crime shocked Britain, and misinformation about the attacker sparked anti-immigrant violence across the country. The government announced it would hold an independent public inquiry into the attack, which was carried out by a U.K.-born teenager whose troubling fascination with violence saw him reported to authorities years before the crime.

Axel Rudakubana, 18, entered the surprise guilty pleas as jury selection had been expected to begin at the start of his trial in Liverpool Crown Court.

The July 29 stabbings led to a week of widespread rioting across parts of England and Northern Ireland after the suspect was falsely identified as an asylum-seeker who had recently arrived in Britain by boat. He was born in Wales to Rwandan parents.

Content creators respond to TikTok’s uncertain future in the US

The Associated Press 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 7:01 PM CST

TikTok content creators who make a living promoting their businesses and personal brands on the app were afraid Sunday that they would have to find new ways to engage consumers and make money as the app's future in the United States remained uncertain.

TikTok told U.S. users that it was beginning to restore service just hours after the popular video-sharing platform went dark in response to a federal ban, which President-elect Donald Trump said he would try to pause by executive order on his first day in office.

Some users reported Sunday that the app was working again, but it remained unavailable for download in Apple and Google’s app stores. Others remained locked out of accessing their profiles and the communities they had built online.

Here's how content creators are reacting:

Jingle jangle: Draft lyrics to ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ sell for $508K at US auction

The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:34 PM CST

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Draft lyrics to Bob Dylan’s song “Mr. Tambourine Man” went for over a half-million dollars as part of a weekend sale of dozens of items related to the iconic American singer-songwriter.

About 60 Dylan items — including photos, music sheets, his guitar, pencil drawings and an oil painting composed by the Nobel Prize for literature winner — were sold on Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee, through Julien’s Auctions.

The items generated nearly $1.5 million in sales overall through in-person and online bidding, the auction house said. Julien's said 50 of the items, including the lyrics that received the highest sale price, came from the personal collection of late music journalist Al Aronowitz.

The typewritten lyrics, which covered three drafts of the 1965 song, were written on two sheets of yellow paper, with Dylan’s annotation on the third draft.

Keke Palmer comedy ‘One of Them Days’ and ‘Mufasa’ in close race for No. 1

Lindsey Bahr, The Associated Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 11:17 AM CST

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Keke Palmer buddy comedy “One of Them Days” opened in first place on the North American box office charts on a particularly slow Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

The R-rated Sony release earned $11.6 million from 2,675 theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday, beating Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” by a hair. By the end of Monday's holiday, “Mufasa” will have the edge, however.

“One of Them Days” cost only $14 million to produce, which it is expected to earn by Monday. The very well-reviewed buddy comedy stars Palmer and SZA as friends and roommates scrambling to get money for rent before their landlord evicts them. Notably it’s the first Black female-led theatrical comedy since “Girls Trip” came out in 2017 and it currently carries a stellar 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But the marketplace was also quite weak overall. The total box office for Friday, Saturday and Sunday will add up to less than $80 million, according to data from Comscore, making it one of the worst Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekends since 1997.

TikTok appears to be restoring service after U.S. ban, still available to Canadians

The Canadian Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 2:08 PM CST

Canadian TikTok users may have noticed on Sunday a lack of new content from American creators as the app went dark in the United States – but later started to reappear.

TikTok said Sunday it was restoring service to U.S. users after president-elect Donald Trump said he would try to pause a court-ordered ban on the platform with an executive order on his first day in office.

Trump said his order would give the app's China-based parent company more time to find an approved buyer.

On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it had unanimously upheld a federal law banning TikTok beginning Sunday unless the platform is sold by ByteDance.

Indian police arrest a man suspected of stabbing Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan

The Associated Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 2:28 AM CST

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police arrested on Sunday a 30-year-old man in India’s financial capital Mumbai whom they said was considered the prime suspect in the stabbing of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan.

The assault shocked the country’s film industry and raised concerns over the lack of security in Mumbai, home to many Bollywood actors.

Khan was stabbed with a knife on Thursday at his home and sustained one deep wound near his spine. A female employee at Khan’s home was also injured during the attack. The actor, who underwent surgery, was out of danger, his doctors said.

Senior police officer Dixit Gedam said the suspect was a Bangladeshi citizen who had entered India illegally and changed his name from Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad to Bijoy Das, and that initial evidence suggested he entered Khan’s home with the intention of theft.

Legacy news on its heels as second Trump era begins, but not abandoning mission

David Bauder, The Associated Press 7 minute read Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025

NEW YORK (AP) — As Donald Trump prepares to assume the presidency for a second time, he faces a news establishment on its heels — but not flat on its back.

Last year's presidential campaign suggested that many traditional outlets are not depended upon, or trusted, nearly as much as they used to be. Some face leadership transitions and financial problems. Incoming power brokers, and their supporters, seek and receive information on friendly turf.

Yet as with most times of transition, opportunities abound for new voices to emerge.

When Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg wanted to publicize Trump-friendly policy changes this month at the social media giant, the choice of outlets was telling. One was “Fox & Friends,” the cable news program that was an agenda-setter during the president-elect's first term and poised to be again. Another was an interview with podcaster Joe Rogan.
