Rockets-Thunder NBA Cup semifinal was a clash of defense, and it was predictable

Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 10:57 PM CST

LAS VEGAS (AP) — It was midway through the third quarter of the Oklahoma City-Houston NBA Cup semifinal matchup on Saturday night. Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had just made a short jumper in the lane and, to his delight, a time-out was immediately called.

He needed it.

He retreated to midcourt, crouched down, propped himself up by his fingertips and took deep breath after deep breath. It was that sort of night. And given the way the Rockets and Thunder have defended all season long, such a game was predictable.

In the end, it was Oklahoma City 111, Houston 96 in a game where the teams combined to shoot 41%. The immediate reward for the Thunder: two days off to recover. The bigger reward: a matchup with Milwaukee on Tuesday night for the NBA Cup, with more than $300,000 per player the difference between winning and losing.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Diving for loose balls. Blocking dunk attempts. Getting tackled by airborne teammates. Giannis Antetokounmpo had a very eventful final few minutes of the NBA Cup semifinals.

He shrugged it all off, too.

“I just tried to compete,” Antetokounmpo said.

That he did — and that's why he and the Milwaukee Bucks will be competing for the NBA Cup on Tuesday night.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The chances were there for the Hawks to continue their unanticipated run in the NBA Cup and make Tuesday night's final.

Just 12 strong minutes were what Atlanta needed.

But that's when the Hawks' offense abandoned itself, scoring only 19 points in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 110-102 semifinal loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Hawks were not only outscored by nine points in the fourth quarter, but they made just 5 of 16 shots and missed six of their final seven attempts.

Schroder set to be traded by Brooklyn to Golden State, AP source says

Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 4:46 PM CST

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Golden State is acquiring point guard Dennis Schroder in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for injured forward De'Anthony Melton, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Saturday.

The trade is expected to be finalized Sunday when league rules allow certain moves to be made. The Nets also receiving a package of second-round draft picks, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal still needs league approval.

ESPN first reported the agreement.

Schroder is averaging 18.4 points and 6.6 assists this season for the Nets, who are 10th in the Eastern Conference. But the trade doesn't give them any on-court help this year: Melton is out for the remainder of the season while recovering from surgery to repair his left ACL.
