Honors English 9
2012-2013 Summer Reading
Congratulations on enrolling in Honors English 9 at Pickerington High School North for
the 2012-2013 academic year! Because this is an Honors level course, it will be more
challenging and rigorous than regular college preparatory English courses. The first step
in this demanding course is a summer reading novel and assignment. Below are the
details of this summer reading assignment:
1) Please obtain a copy of the novel, The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. You
can purchase this book at Barnes and Noble or any other bookstore (you can obtain
cheaper, used copies online at websites like Amazon).
2) Please practice annotating the novel. Annotation is a skill that will be used in the rest
of the Honors English courses in high school, as well as in other subject areas in high
school and college. Annotation is the skill of noticing and marking what is significant.
We plan to look at the annotations you have made in your books and give you an
annotation grade during the first days of school. Here is what we expect you to do:
-Read with a pencil or pen in your hand.
-Underline the key words, phrases, and sentences.
Key words explain or have emotional appeal.
Key words are central to your understanding of the book.
-Write yourself notes in the margins identifying figures of speech that you notice.

-Draw the following symbols in the margins
! means -I agree! Yes! Wow! I didn’t see that coming!
* (a star) means -This is important.
X means -I disagree. That is really weird. Really? Really??
? means -I hope there is stuff later in the book that explains this.
-I have to think about this.
-I have to look up this word because I can’t figure it out
from the context.
-Pay special attention to beginnings: beginnings of sections, chapters, and
paragraphs.
-Your annotations are the physical evidence of your CLOSE READING of the
book. Good readers re-read (even though poor readers don’t think they do), so if you
need to re-read to do a close reading, and then do it.
3) In addition to annotating the novel, you will need to complete the following reading
guide that goes along with the novel. This reading guide and your annotations will be
due on the second day of school, Tuesday, August 28, 2012.
4) You will have a test on all aspects of the novel on Friday, August 31, 2012.
