롭 디커먼은 텍사스 주 플라노 출신의 신경 및 척추 외과 의사로, 프로 운동선수들에게 세간의 이목을 끄는 수술을 해 왔다.

교육 및 직업 경력

롭 디커먼은 텍사스 웨슬리언 대학교에서 화학 학사 학위를 취득하며 학부 과정을 밟았다.[1] 노스텍사스대학 보건과학센터에서 대학원 과정을 수료해 철학박사(Ph)를 받았다.1998년 Osteopathic Medicine(D.O.) 학위뿐만 아니라 생물 의학 분야에서도 총장상을 받았다. 그는 최고 레지던트였던 노스 쇼어 대학교 롱아일랜드 유대인 메디컬 센터에서 레지던트를 수행했다.[2] 그는 텍사스 백 연구소의 펠로우쉽과 국립보건원(NIH)의 뇌종양 펠로우쉽을 수료했다.[3]

척추융합을 위한 줄기세포 사용

디커먼은 환자 자신의 줄기세포를 활용한 요통 치료 시술을 해 언론의 주목을 받았다.[12] 이 시술의 경우 긴 바늘로 환자의 엉덩이에서 줄기세포를 추출해 원심분리기에 응축한 뒤 수술실 시술 중 척추의 퇴화디스크 사이에 삽입되는 작은 용기(우리라고 한다)에 넣는다.[13] 그러면 환자들은 전통적인 척추 융합을 받는 환자들보다 회복 시간이 짧은 경향이 있다(회복에 1년 이상이 걸릴 수 있다), 시체 뼈나 환자 자신의 고관절 뼈의 일부를 사용하는 더 침습적인 시술이다.[14][15] 릭 페리 텍사스 주지사가 2011년 받은 것과 같은 이 절차는 실험적이고 미국 식품의약국(FDA)의 승인을 받지 못해 논란이 되고 있다.[16] 페리의 수술에 이어 그는 현재 셀텍스(페리의 수술을 집도한 회사)가 미국에서 치료제 제공을 할 수 없지만 의원들에게 절차의 규제와 승인을 탐색할 것을 촉구했다.[17][18] 그 절차는 임상실험을 하고 있다.[19]

래니 와드킨스

2008년 전 PGA 챔피언인 래니 와드킨스는 허리 통증으로 더 이상 골프를 칠 수 없었다.[20] 디커먼은 정형외과 의사 스콧 블루멘탈과 함께 와드킨스에 대한 이중 융접수술을 하며 등에 있는 신경을 수축시켰다.[21] 수술 도중 의사들은 와드킨의 목에서 소프트볼 크기의 낭종도 제거해 그의 사다리 근육에서 뽑아냈다.[22] 왓킨스는 PGA로 돌아올 수 있었다.[23]

건설근로자 두개골 손톱 제거

2011년 미국 노스텍사스의 한 취업 현장에서 건설 노동자가 실수로 못총으로 총격을 받아 남성의 우세한 뇌엽에 4인치짜리 철조망을 발사하는 사고가 발생했다.[24] 디커맨은 남자의 뇌에서 못을 제거하는 것을 감독했다.[25] 남자는 완전히 회복했다.[26]

지아오네궈

2012년 미국 텍사스의 중국인 대학원생 지아오네 구오는 클럽 축구 경기에서 상대 선수가 머리를 무릎으로 부딪혀 두개골을 산산조각 냈다.[27] 뇌가 붓는 바람에 디커만 박사는 혼수상태 학생의 두개골 4분의 1을 제거했는데, 당시 생존 확률은 50%에 달했다.[28][29] 부기가 가라앉은 두 달 후 디커만은 궈의 머리 위에 보철판을 올려놓았다.[30] 더 이상 축구를 할 수 없지만 회복되어 학업에 복귀할 수 있었다.[31]

소속 및 조직

디커먼은 미국 뇌종양협회와 뇌하수체학회 회원이다.[32] 그는 북미 척추 협회 위원회에서 활동했다.[33] 그는 신경질환 연구를 위해 2006년 설립된 자선재단인 텍사스 신경외과 연구재단의 설립자 겸 이사다.[34] 그는 또한 미국 외과 대학, 미국 골격병학회, 경추연구회, 미국 척수손상협회의 회원이다.[35]
