Two dead serious romance dramas about a boy meeting a frail and inaccessible girl with limited future, plus two grown-ups as important catalytic side roles.
Despite the different settings (SciFi war vs. hospital), both stories have a lot more in common than just being compact 6-episode OVAs from almost the same release year.

On the last day of the summer break, Asaba Naoyuki sneaks into school for a secret swim at night. At the pool he encounters a mysterious girl named Iriya Kana, with embedded silver semi-spheres in her wrists.
The following day, as the new school term begins, Iriya transfers to Asaba's class, much to his surprise. Iriya clearly has trouble associating with other students, but develops a liking to Asaba, and even joins the Electromagnetic Newspaper Club he is part of. Frequent calls to the teachers room, and numerous special privileges, along with a personal bodyguard, Enomoto, make it clear that Iriya is connected to and a very important part of the Sonohara military base nearby.
And so Iriya and Asaba's heart-rending UFO summer begins...

A sadly-bittersweet romance that will capture you till the end! ..there is only one thing that I really don't understand: the ending...based on the development of the plot, it should be completely different...!

There were some good and unexpected dramatic and a bit yandere-ish moments, but I didn't like the characters, especially the main ones. It's like anime characters tend to fall in love in an instant, for whatsoever reasons and create a contrived melodramatic atmosphere, because of someone they kind of just met. I didn't buy that. And the storyline was like a spider's web. Full of nets, that block your eyesight. For fans of the listed genres only.

I suggested myself with certain AMV about this series and seems like I expected way too much.. still nice to watch but the characters could be far better developed. It's good that the series have s-f twist to it.

Even though it was only six episodes, Iriya no Sora has to be one of the most depressing things I have ever seen! I personally am a fan of stories with a strong emotional connection and Iriya no Sora provides just that! A very strong, deep story with a lot of drama and emotion. It's a prime example of one of those "long struggle" kind of stories.
