How to weatherproof outdoor furniture
Last Updated Sep 14, 2018 · Written by Kat Tate · 3 min read
You’ve had your eye on them for eons – those perfect pieces of pristine outdoor furniture. Brought them home. Spent time assembling and arranging. And then the wind and rain sets in – or the strong summer sun. Hopefully your new furniture was made to withstand some tough conditions (poly or resin rattan, and hardwoods are best), but there are still some extra measures you can take to extend their life.
Under the awning
In wet weather, sometimes the simplest solution is to cover your outdoor space. And awnings get the job done quickly and affordably.
Whether your furniture lives on a patio, balcony, or open gazebo, an awning will keep the harsh sun and rain away – and protect more than just your furniture, including the floors. Choose from retractable, automatic, fixed guide, straight drop, drop arm, and freestanding awnings.
Furniture covers
Furniture covers offer another handy solution for shading and protecting your outdoor furniture. You can custom make your own, or buy generic covers that tie at the sides for a snug fit. Some brands even produce their own covers, so ask the seller at the time of purchase.
Be sure to buy furniture covers that are lined with a durable, weather-proof material such as PVC – and check its temperature range to ensure it suits the conditions in your neck of the woods.
And even more importantly, be sure to only buy covers that are easy to clean and maintain; otherwise they’ll be more trouble than they’re worth!
Keep it clean
Besides covering your new outdoor furniture, it’s a good idea to regularly clean and maintain it – especially if you don’t have furniture covers. Dirt, grime, and water can build up on your beloved items and shorten their lifespan – and make them look scruffy and old. Check the manufacturer’s instructions so you use the correct cleaning products, and follow their specific advice.
Treat it
Waterproofing spray is another great idea for caring for your furniture. Always follow the instructions on the cleaning product – and the manufacturer’s advice. Chances are, you’ll need to first remove any dust and dirt with a vacuum or dry cloth. Then dry the furniture before applying the spray and wait for it to dry before use.
If your furniture is wicker or a natural grain or rattan, you should use a marine-grade varnish on your furniture every couple of years.
