Chronology
BLAST SLAM II was the second event of the BLAST Slam series, held in the BLAST Studios in Copenhagen in February 2025. Like the previous tournament, it featured a Best of One Group Stage into a King of the Hill/Gauntlet Playoff bracket, with ten invited teams.
The event saw a number of unusual heroes and items being picked, despite 7.37e being nearly three months old. Abaddon and Io made surprising returns, the former as a carry and played by multiple teams. The latter phases of the tournament saw invisibility and vision become themes, with Nyx Assassin, Bounty Hunter, and Riki becoming highly-contested supports. Glimmer Cape, usually bought by supports, saw it even being bought by carries, taking advantage of its invisibility and defensive capabilities.
Tundra Esports won the event by beating Gaimin Gladiators 3-0 in comfortable fashion. The Grand Final saw dyrachyo, removed from Gaimin Gladiators after The International 2024 for watson, beat his former team once again. Tundra Esports' victory was also the second consecutive Tier 1 tournament win in a row (after FISSURE PLAYGROUND #1), marking them as one of the teams to fear.
BLAST Slam II told us one thing: That even if we don't get a patch, you can dig a little bit deeper and find new things. Before this tournament, we didn't really care about Abaddon, we didn't really care too much about Io, and we didn't care about a lot of heroes. But it came to light. I feel like if you are out there right now and bored of the patch, think a little harder. Stop looking at Pro Tracker, stop looking at the stats, and find a new hero. Because yes, things can look a bit stale, but there is always so much depth to this beautiful game, there are things to find, and if the pros can do it, you can do it too.

Event[edit]
Background[edit]
BLAST Slam II was the second event of the BLAST Slam series. Its format was similar to the previous tournament, with ten invited teams divided into two groups, playing Best of One series to determine seeding into a King of the Hill/Gauntlet Playoff. It also featured a $1m USD prize pool, divided into prize money and team earnings, and was also played in the BLAST Studios in Copenhagen.
Ten teams were invited to the tournament. Some eyebrows were raised when Nigma Galaxy were invited over Team Spirit and AVULUS, with both of these teams having had much better results in previous Tier 1 tournaments. Team Spirit's manager, Korb3n, said that neither team had not dropped out, but rather had not received an invite to begin with.[8] Furthermore, fan-favorite Miracle- missed the event due to illness, with Ghost standing-in, a role he had performed at Clavision: Snow Ruyi half a year before. Two Chinese teams (Xtreme Gaming and Yakult Brothers) were invited to the tournament, doubling the region's representation, at the expense of South America (with HEROIC missing out). Southeast Asia also made its first appearance at BLAST Slam, with Talon Esports securing an invitation.
The event took place shortly after FISSURE PLAYGROUND #1, won by Tundra Esports, having reverse-swept Team Falcons 3-2 in the Grand Final. PARIVISION also secured third, having swapped Crystallis for Satanic on loan — a solid result, but arguably a downgrade from first at ESL One Bangkok 2024. BetBoom Team and Team Liquid also lay in the shadows, both teams having won Tier 1 tournaments in the recent past, and were looking to return to form. Gaimin Gladiators, having struggled for form and failed to qualify for ESL One Raleigh 2025, were also looking to return to their past form, now with a new carry, having swapped dyrachyo for watson.
Group Stage[edit]
It was noted by Reddit, amusingly, that the Group Stages were seemingly drawn by color scheme.[9] Color-coded or not, the Group Stage saw a number of upsets occur. The unfancied Nigma Galaxy beat Team Falcons, Xtreme Gaming and PARIVISION in convincing fashion, marking a return to form that had arguably not been seen since 2019. Gaimin Gladiators also won three times, losing to Team Falcons but beating Nigma Galaxy, securing them first place over them on Neustadtl score. Group A was more even, with Tundra Esports and Yakult Brothers both winning three times.
Playoffs[edit]
The Group Stage had seen a number of short matches, which slowed down to some extent in the Playoffs. Abaddon continued his rise up the meta, with both Yakult Brothers and Team Falcons playing him as a carry in their series (which Team Falcons won 2-0). Nigma Galaxy continued to surprise, beating PARIVISION 2-1 in their first Playoff match, leading to questions in the community about whether the roster was better off with Ghost rather than Miracle-.
The Grand Final was contested by Group Stage winners Tundra Esports and Gaimin Gladiators. Tundra Esports brought Nigma Galaxy's run to an end with a deserved 2-1 victory, whilst Gaimin Gladiators overwhelmed Team Falcons in an aggressive 2-0 victory. This setup a rematch between Gaimin Gladiators and their former carry, dyrachyo. The series, however, was not remotely close, as Tundra Esports comfortably won 3-0, securing themselves a second consecutive Tier 1 tournament win, and marked them as the team to beat in upcoming tournaments. This 3-0 also extended Tundra Esports' win streak over Gaimin Gladiators to ten games, nine of which were with dyrachyo.[10]
Meta and innovations[edit]
Yakult Brothers' Ame and Tundra Esports' 33 proved to have creative sparks at the event. Ame picked a carry Beastmaster twice, winning both times. He was not the only player to pick an unusual core, with Abaddon, barely seen in the professional meta in years, began to creep up in usage. Ghost demonstrated its prowess as a carry, with a win against Team Falcons.
Cybersport.ru published an analysis (in Russian) of Glimmer Cape's usage after the event.
- А вот и новая мета в «Доте» — для кор-персонажей нашли имбовый артефакт [Here is the new meta in Dota - an imbalanced item has been found for cores] — Вячеслав "PilotBaker" Ипатов, Cybersport.ru
Invisibility, in the form of Nyx Assassin, Riki, and Bounty Hunter as supports to provide vision, also became a common theme, with all three becoming highly-contested. However, the most unusual innovation with invisibility was Glimmer Cape, typically bought by supports, becoming popular at the event, but bought by cores. Offlaner 33 had used the item in his pubs, and brought it to the event, eventually having an 87% win rate with the item. The item provided benefits similar to Pipe of Insight, but more value for money when the carrier tended to operate more alone, such as an offlaner. 33's innovation caught on at the event, with multiple cores purchasing the item, including teammate dyrachyo, whose purchase on Phantom Assassin was the first Glimmer Cape purchase in the professional scene.[11]
