The dual macuahuitl (pronounced mah-kwa-we-tl) is a two-handed weapon that requires level 70 Attack and 75 Strength to equip, which is obtained as a possible reward from the Lunar Chest in Neypotzli.
The weapon hits twice per attack, spaced 1 game tick apart when attacking monsters, and dealing damage in two hitsplats, with both hitsplats having their max hit halved. If the player has an odd maximum hit, the first hit's maximum damage will be rounded down and the second hit's will be rounded up, e.g. a maximum hit of 25 will be split into two maximum hits of 12 and 13.
Each hitsplat has its own accuracy check, however unlike other two-hit weapons like Torag's hammers or sulphur blades, where both checks are independent (either can hit or miss without affecting the other, equivalent to two separate hits with a single-hit weapon), the dual macuahuitl checks the two hits sequentially and the second check will only proceed if the first succeeds. If the first accuracy check succeeds, damage will be rolled for the first hit and a second accuracy check will go ahead for the second hit. If the first accuracy check fails, the second check will not proceed at all and both hits will be zeroes. As a result, "half" of the weapon's DPS functions normally, while the other "half" is reduced due to needing to pass two accuracy checks. This is an intentional design[1] to push the weapon into a niche against targets with lower Defence levels and mirrors the attacks of the Moons of Peril, which check accuracy in the same way. As a slight counterbalance to this drawback, the dual macuahuitl has relatively high attack bonuses for its attack speed and level requirements, with its crush bonus substantially exceeding the Abyssal bludgeon's and rivaling that of an Inquisitor's mace paired with an Avernic defender.
When worn with all of the other pieces of the blood moon armour set, the player gains the Bloodrager set effect, where the dual macuahuitl has a 33% chance upon a successful hit to attack one tick earlier than usual , allowing the player to attack again after 3 ticks. Both hits count towards this independently[1], meaning there is a 5/9 (55.5...%) chance to trigger the effect if both hits are successful. When worn with an Amulet of blood fury, it can drain charges quite quickly, due to having 2 hits per attack and attacking faster than normal with the set effect.
The dual macuahuitl has a special attack, Blood Infusion, costing 25% special attack energy and requiring the full blood moon armour set to use.
Blood Infusion raises the player's minimum and maximum hit by 25% for that attack, whilst taking damage equal to 25% of their current Hitpoints, rounded down (dealing no damage when less than 4 health). Additionally, the Bloodrager set effect is guaranteed to trigger if the attack hits; if the special attack fails, the player will still take the damage used for it.
Within the Nightmare Zone, the special attack will remove absorption charges if above 4 HP, dealing 0 damage to the player.
During the Clones special attack phase of the Eclipse Moon fight, only a single hitsplat is dealt, rather than the two the weapon should deal; other multi-hit weapons, such as the scythe of Vitur and the sulphur blades, also suffer from this bug, resulting in only one hitsplat.
A macuahuitl is a wooden club with obsidian blades embedded in its shaft. It was prominently used amongst the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican civilizations for over 2,400 years. In the Nahuatl (Aztec) language, macuahuitl means "hand-wood."
