Urns
Urns are a type of pot made using the Crafting skill, used for gaining bonus experience when training other skills. Urns are available for ten different skills: Cooking, Divination, Farming, Fishing, Hunter, Mining, Prayer, Runecrafting, Smithing, and Woodcutting.
Creation[edit | edit source]

Making an urn requires two soft clay. The clay is formed into an unfired (unf) urn at a potter's wheel or portable crafter, using the drop-down menu in the top left of the crafting interface to select the type of urn to make.
The urn is then fired at a pottery oven or portable crafter or by casting the Lunar spell Fire Urn, resulting in a no-rune-attached (nr) urn.
Finally, the urn is activated by imbuing the (nr) urn with a rune or elemental staff to produce a rune-imbued (r) urn. Each type of urn uses a particular type of rune to be activated:
The crafting process requires a specific Crafting level that depends on the type of urn. For example, to form, fire, or add a rune to a decorated cooking urn, a player must have at least 81 Crafting. Although only (nr) urns are tradeable, the assist system can be used for any step in the process, which allows players with any Crafting level to use any type of urn.
Forming and firing urns gives Crafting experience. When a rune is attached, the player will gain 1 experience in the skill of the urn. For example, if a player adds a fire rune to any tier Smelting urn, they will gain 1 Smithing experience.
The Artificer's measure provides a 5% chance to duplicate an urn while forming an urn.
Usage[edit | edit source]

Urns need only be held in the backpack while training in order to fill them with experience. Empty urns are stackable but will generate a new used urn item when one begins to fill.
For every five normal experience points gained, one bonus experience point is added to the urn. Once the urn has been filled to capacity, it can be teleported to Ernie. A game setting allows players to automatically teleport full urns (see Settings > Gameplay > Interfaces > Inventory). After teleporting an urn, the player receives the experience held by the urn. Thus, having a suitable urn in backpack while training a skill results in a 20% higher experience gain.
Using an urn enhancer further increases experience awarded by 25% at the expense of 20 charges. Urns differ in the skill for which they collect bonus experience, their capacity, and restrictions on the quality of resources from which they can collect scraps. The experience they give is not affected by any experience multiplier other than the urn enhancer.
Only "base" experience from skill training counts towards filling an urn. For example, if one were to mine ore while wearing the golden mining suit, only the base amount of experience gained would count towards filling the urn. This also means that other "bonus" experience boosts given (such as from a penance horn or sacred clay item) or a special experience gain (such as a minigame reward or lamp) does not count towards filling the urn. For example, cutting magic tree only count for its base 365 experience even if bonus experience is used.
Use of Crystallise has different effects on filling urns of different types. Fishing and Woodcutting urns are filled at a normal rate when fishing or woodcutting a crystallised resource spot, while filling Mining urns include the 50-87.5% extra experience from using Crystallise and Light Form, which counts towards filling the urn.
The effigies obtained from the Effigy Incubator Distraction and Diversion take priority over urns; while any effigy is held in the backpack, all experience gained while skilling in one of its targeted skills will be used towards filling the effigy and will not fill an urn.
Prayer urns[edit | edit source]
Prayer urns are unique in that the player does not receive demonic ashes as a drop when killing a demon with a suitable urn in the backpack. Instead, the experience one would have gained from scattering the ashes plus a 20% bonus are directly added to the urn. This eliminates having to collect the ashes and scattering them manually, and allows training Prayer by killing demons from a safe spot without having to leave the safe spot to collect ashes.
Killing demons is the only way to fill prayer urns. Scattering ashes manually, such as ashes that were obtained as drops or by trade, has no effect on urns and receives no bonus.
Calculation of materials required to fill the urn[edit | edit source]
Material needed[edit | edit source]
All urns give a 20% bonus on the experience required to fill them. Therefore, players can use the following to calculate the required amount of the material gathered in order to fill the urn:
For example: cutting yew logs gives 175 experience and a strong woodcutting urn gives 1662.5 experience. The formula calculates that 47.5 logs are required, so the urn will be full after 48 logs are cut. If a second woodcutting urn is present in the backpack, the remaining half a log worth of experience will be transferred to the new urn.
Percentage filled[edit | edit source]
The contribution of each unit material toward filling the urn can also be calculated. The following can be used to estimate the percentage contribution of filling the urn per unit material:
Example continued: , so each log will fill the urn by about 2.1%.
Calculation of prayer urns[edit | edit source]
For the prayer urns, the formula is a bit different, since the bonus experience, including the unit experience, is awarded when the urn is teleported. In this case, the "urn experience" above should just be the bonus experience, i.e. one sixth of the experience awarded when teleporting the urn.
The urn calculator can also be found here.
Using multiple urns[edit | edit source]
Only one urn of a specific skill type may be filled at a time. If a player has two or more urns of the same type in the backpack and one is filled, leftovers from the first urn will automatically be added to the second urn. Additionally, if the player has a partially filled urn in their bank and at least one stackable urn in the backpack, the partially filled urn will be automatically teleported from the bank into the backpack. Players may fill multiple urns simultaneously from various skills; for example, filling a cracked fishing urn can be done while also filling a cracked mining urn.
When there are different tiers of urns for the same skill that could be filled during an activity in the backpack, the urn with the lower tier is used first before the ones with a higher tier. For example, fishing raw pike (requires level 25 Fishing) with both a fragile fishing urn (fish up to and including level 30 Fishing) and a plain fishing urn (fish up to and including level 50 Fishing) will fill up the fragile urn first. The leftover from a full urn from one tier is also added to an empty urn of a different tier.
Players can only have 10 partially filled or full urns in one skill type at a time. Once the maximum number of urns is reached in total (backpack plus bank), at least one urn must be teleported away (only full urns may be teleported) before another urn can be filled. There is no advantage from stockpiling full urns.
Assisting[edit | edit source]
Players can buy an urn (nr) from the Grand Exchange and get an assist to add a rune to activate the urn. When using the Assist System, any suitable urns held by the assisted are activated, but none of the urns held by the assister are activated.
Beasts of Burden[edit | edit source]
Only unfired urns (unf) and runed urns (r) can be stored with Beasts of Burden. A urns (nr), partially-filled urns, and full urns cannot be stored with a BoB.
Urn storage[edit | edit source]
The Brooch of the Gods can be used to store 1,000 of each type of decorated urn (r).

Types of urns[edit | edit source]
Free-to-play players can craft the lowest tier urns, even if they are for members skills (such as Divination, Farming, and Hunter), but cannot craft tiers of urns that require higher than level 50 Crafting, even for free-to-play skills.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- They were first mentioned in the February 2011 Behind the Scenes article and released on 15 February 2011. A second batch of urns, which also made all runed urns stackable, were then released on 24 July 2017.
- When you "Check Level" of an urn that is exactly half full, the message shown is "This (urn type) is half full, or is it half empty?" as opposed to "This (urn type) is 50% full." a reference to the common optimist/pessimist comparison, "Is the glass half empty or half full?"
- Previously, teleporting urns did not require corresponding Crafting level to make or add runes to them. However, this was changed with the Evolution of Combat, but the requirement can be boosted or assisted. The Crafting level requirement to teleport urns has been removed on 14 August 2017.
- With the game update on 24 July 2017, urns that are filled with a rune (r) are stackable. Also, 4 new types of urns were released: Divination, Farming, Hunter, and Runecrafting.[1]
- Unlike most tiered items, urns in free-to-play skills seemingly have their availability determined by skill level required to create them. Strong urns are divided into F2P ones that require less than 50 Crafting (Mining, Smithing) and members' ones that require more than 50 Crafting (Cooking, Fishing, Runecrafting, Woodcutting).
