SONY
Sony Corporation was founded in Tokyo in 1946 by electrical engineer Masaru Ibuka and physicist Akio Morita, who invested ¥190,000 to establish the company. Initially, Sony had around twenty employees and was known as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation).
Sonus + Sonny = SONY
The name "Sony" was later created by combining the words "Sonus" (Latin for sound), and "Sonny" (or Sonny boy), which was a popular slang term for young men in the 1950s. "Sony" was chosen as the ideal company name due to its easy pronunciation, consistent in practically all languages worldwide.
Not a walkman, but a rice cooker
At first, Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation focused mainly on repairing electronic devices and machinery, with limited production of its own products. One of their earliest creations was an automatic rice cooker, which quickly gained popularity in Japan. However, the real breakthrough came in 1954, when the first transistor was developed in America, a technology that hadn't been used in radio equipment at the time. Sony embraced this innovation, incorporating it into their products, and in the following year, they introduced the first Japanese transistor radio.
Sony today – a revolution in technology
And today? Sony has become a global leader in high-quality electronics. Since its inception, the company has been synonymous with technological innovation, boasting revolutionary achievements like the compact disc, Walkman, and Discman.
