It was a great time with good company and amazing food. Bruce has extensive experience in the yatai scene and he knows exactly which places to go and which places to avoid. If you're looking to enjoy yatai without taking a shot in the dark, then definitely sign up for this tour. You won't regret it!

Hakata Yatai Hopping: Fukuoka Street Food Tour

Bruce was super knowledgeable, friendly, and generous! We lucked out with great weather and enjoyed lots of dishes at a long-standing family-run yatai stall, followed up by a nice restaurant experience. We never would have known where to go from amongst all the options, so I'm very glad we did this and got Bruce's recommendations.

We had an incredible food tour in Fukuoka. The yatais were superb! Bruce, our guide, was exceptionally accommodating and attentive to our requests. He facilitated an excellent exchange of travel experiences, providing insights and tips that enriched our journey. Bruce also guided us on our train ride back to the hotel and recommended other fantastic restaurants and must-visit spots. The food tour with Bruce is highly recommended. We’ll definitely return to Fukuoka and book another tour with Bruce!

Hakata Yatai Hopping: Fukuoka Street Food Tour
Food Tours
I reached out to Bruce a month or so ago with a relatively simple concept: With Fukuoka being the Tonkotsu ramen capital of the world, and Gyoza being the classic pairing to that ramen, what would an “Ultimate Gyoza Tour” look like? To my surprise, Bruce got back to me within a day with a potential itinerary that looked so good that I booked my tour then and there. Hands down, this is the best of the dozen-plus food tours that I’ve been on as an adult. We started out close to our hotel, hit three incredible gyoza places (two by foot, another by subway) with varied but incredibly delicious flavor profiles and textures, then made it out to try two of Bruce’s favorite Yatai, capping the night off with a ramen I was assured would blow the socks off anything else I had in the city (and wow, did it ever!) Bruce is as knowledgeable a resident of Fukuoka as you can ask for, and with decades of experience finding the best eats in the city, you are in the best of hands (doubly so if your Japanese isn’t strong enough to track down, much less eat at some of these more local-oriented establishments). We shelled out for a private tour hoping for a “transformative gyoza experience”, and left with that and the knowledge that we’d definitely be seeing Bruce again to show us more of this wildly underrated food city. A++, as highly recommended as this review was meant to convey if not higher!

Hakata Yatai Hopping: Fukuoka Street Food Tour
Food Tours

Street food is a big deal in the Land of the Rising Sun, and its vendors are some of the most consistently creative in the world. In fact, many of the iconic dishes of Japan — including sushi and yakitori — started their life in the street food carts of the big cities! These old-school carts are known as yatai, and nowadays they’ve undergone a hipster renaissance.

Alongside the classic Japanese street food dishes, you’ll find plenty of more recent additions to love like “yaki imo” baked sweet potatoes, “takoyaki” octopus batter balls, “imagawayaki” cakes filled with red bean paste, to name a few. The list is basically endless, and each region has its own unique variations to discover.

If you want the lowdown on the local street delicacies, hop on one of these Japanese street food tours and get the expertise from a local guide. You’ll be taken to the very best places to try Japanese street food in its most authentic forms. By the time you’re finished, you’ll be an expert in all the classics, as well as whatever new styles the mad scientists of the market stall and yatai are cooking up next.
