Research Vessel

Together with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the DFG maintains two research vessels, the MARIA S. MERIAN and the METEOR. They serve as support for basic research in a range of different scientific disciplines. The vessels are funded by the DFG as “central research facilities”.

The METEOR is the third largest research vessel in Germany.

Submission of Cruise Proposal

Based on scientific criteria, the Review Panel German Research Vessels (GPF) set up by the BMBF and the DFG decides which cruise proposals are to be included in the cruise planning. If you are a scientist at a publicly financed research institution in Germany, you can apply for ship time on Germany's large and medium-sized research vessels by submitting cruise proposals in the GPF procedure. If you also require funding for expedition and initial evaluation costs for the cruise, you can submit a proposal as part of the current call for proposals of the DFG Priority Programme SPP 2520 “Research Vessels”. All information on submitting a proposal can be found on the German Research Vessels Portal. Please use the DFG's elan Portal to submit your proposal. The current call for proposals for SPP 2520 (usually open from July to December of each year) can be found on the DFG’s website under Information for Researchers: Calls for Proposals.
