About the Author
Chapter 1
Dylan Drake lay in his bed pondering. His eyes were on the ceiling; however, he wasn’t seeing it. His mind was somewhere else, back in time to his wedding day almost five years earlier. The events of that day were so clear in his memory that on one hand it seemed to have happened last week, yet on the other, so much had transpired it seemed a lifetime ago. He took a deep breath and moved slightly. His wife shifted next to him and he listened for a moment until he heard her steady breathing continue. He would be a father in less than a month. The thought scared him, invigorated him, excited him and had also fueled his desire to find his maternal grandmother who had given his father up for adoption as an infant. He thought of the journey he’d been on in looking for and finding his grandmother. What a whirlwind it had been! And now, she was set to visit them for Thanksgiving. He shook his head, marveling at how much could change in such a short amount of time. He thought back to when his search began, the day of his wedding...
5 YEARS EARLIER
Dylan smiled as the cameras around him flashed. His bride stood next to him; a timeless beauty in her white, strapless gown. He couldn’t believe the day had finally arrived! He and Courtney had been dating for a little less than two years. But from first time they met, he’d known she was the one for him. It felt good to finally take the next step and start their lives as husband and wife.
Dylan looked around the decorated room filled with friends and family. His father, James, and his mother Debbie stood talking with Uncle Bill, who had a pretty young thing on his arm, the newest in his life. Dylan shook his head at the scene. His eyes moved on, scanning, taking in the numerous people that had come to support and congratulate him and his bride. He spotted his three younger sisters getting pictures at the other end of the room and he felt a wave of affection. Olivia, who was three years younger than he, was a striking, dark-haired woman with soft green eyes. She was the shortest of the three girls but still commanded a certain level of respect wherever she went. Elizabeth, or Beth as they called her, was next. Her hair was lighter than her older sister, and she was a bit taller. She was the most outgoing of all the Drake children, with a laugh you could hear across the room and a smile that dazzled those around her. Then there was Shannon, the youngest in the family. At nineteen, she was also the tallest girl. Her long auburn hair hung loosely as she laughed with her sisters. Though Dylan loved all his sisters, Shannon held a particularly special place in his heart. He was thrilled to be celebrating this special day with them all.
Dylan felt a hand on his shoulder. Turning, he looked into his father’s face, a wide grin filling it.
Well,
his father started, you’re officially a married man! How does it feel?
Dylan laughed slightly. Umm, I’ll let you know in a couple weeks when everything settles down.
Good idea. You’ve got a beautiful bride there.
James smiled, gesturing to Courtney, his graying mustache rising with his grin.
Dylan glanced back at his bride, who was talking to a group of friends. She really is.
He turned back to James, I’m a lucky guy. There are still times I feel shocked she picked me.
James gave a knowing smile. I remember feeling that way about your mother.
Dylan had a giant amount of respect for his parents. They had been married for thirty years and still seemed to be going strong. He knew maintaining a marital relationship was a lot of work and hoped he and Courtney could follow in their footsteps.
But marriage is only the start,
James went on. Next thing you know you’ll have kids running around and your practice will be up and going. You’re going to be busy, I can tell you that right now!
I’m looking forward to that, Dad,
Dylan said honestly. I’m ready for family life.
Family is the most important thing in the world Dyl,
James said, nodding and placing a hand on his son’s shoulder. A wonderful wife and children... that’s the dream.
Dylan was quiet a moment and James noticed.
What is it?
he asked.
Dylan glanced down at his shoes briefly. I was just wondering if you ever wish your mother could be here to see this? I mean your birth mother.
James was silent for a moment and Dylan could see the thoughts running through his head. He looked around the room, his eyes in some faraway place. Finally, he nodded slowly. Sometimes. But I’m to the point now where I’m almost done trying. You can only search for a person for so long. I’m not even sure if she’s still alive.
There are so many new ways of finding people nowadays...
Dylan started.
I know,
James interrupted, raising a hand. But with my health the way it is, and then the wedding – I’m just tired. I think I’m ready to give up on it and let it be. Truthfully, I think I gave up on it a long time ago.
I could help,
Dylan offered. I know I’ve offered before and I know you’ve been hesitant, but if you’d really let me get into this, I think I could find her.
He watched his father, trying to gauge his reaction.
James was silent again. His eyes settled on something on the floor in front of him and Dylan wondered briefly if he should have even brought the subject up. Finally, he answered slowly, I don’t want you to waste your first years of marriage working on something that may never happen.
Dad,
Dylan said affectionately, patting his arm, she’s my family too.
James smiled and shook his head slightly, knowing well the tenacity his only son possessed. I know.
So, you’ll let me poke around a little?
James sighed in defeat. Alright, but only if you promise me it won’t consume your life. You have a wife now, and a practice to get started. This is by no means the most important thing for you to be spending your time on.
Dylan chuckled. I promise I won’t neglect my other duties. I’ll take my time.
Good boy.
James smiled at him.
PRESENT DAY
Almost five years had gone by in a blink. Dylan had indeed taken his time with the search. There had been several leads, and each time he thought he’d found her, he’d been disappointed. When Courtney got pregnant and his father’s health deteriorated, he’d felt an overwhelming urge to find his grandmother once and for all. His dad deserved to at least meet the woman who had brought him
