Chapter 1: Introduction
If you’re a busy person, stress is almost always a part of your day-to-day life. Many people have stressors from work, family, projects and obligations. Being able to deal with stress effectively is very important in achieving your goals; if you allow your stress to become out of control, it can overwhelm you and lead to burnout.
One of the most pressured times in someone’s life is when they are a student or working on a dissertation. There can be an overwhelming amount of stress to complete assignments, meet deadlines and produce a large amount of writing and research outputs. If you’re a professional academic or a writer, you’ll also spend a lot of time alone with your thoughts and words, which can only compound your stress.
Developing good stress-management strategies can improve your life dramatically and help to prevent some of the negative consequences of poorly-managed stress, such as mental and physical health concerns. It’s important to monitor your stress level regularly, and if it becomes too high and starts to affect your regular functioning, you’ll need to do something about it as soon as possible.
In this short guide I look at what stress is and how you can change the way you look at stress in your life. I look at common coping strategies that don’t work, and also share the ones that
