I love the 1930s. There’s a glamour about the era that’s intoxicating. But there’s also a sadness beneath the sheen as society tries too hard to gloss over its cracks. In so many ways, Jingwen as a character perfectly resonates the 1930s as a product of her era.

She’s a dancing girl at the Paramount — the premier nightclub of Shanghai — who makes a living by hooking the fortunes of the ‘gentlemen elite’ by making them fall in love with her, ready to gift her the world for just one more dance. She’s all about the glitz and sparkle of this decadent lifestyle. But in her spare time, she delivers bones for the city’s most powerful mafia gang, and has grown up watching her grandmother carve out limbs of flesh and replace them with arms of silver.

All this would make an amazing book in itself, but for Daughter of Calamity, it’s just the backdrop to the story. This has more atmosphere and layers than the real life city of Shanghai! The book pulls you into this world so well, and carefully conceals its twists so that they can be unleashed with maximum impact. It delivers a particular kind of thrill that feels fresh, walking the line where criminality meets fantasy, and family meets morality, all of it blending together to addictive effect.

I devoured this in two sittings. That doesn’t happen all too often. But I absolutely adored Jingwen and her world and I couldn’t put it down. The way her dancing was described, and the symbolism is represented in different parts of the book, fully absorbed me. It adds so many layers to her complexity and her secrets. What begins as a rebellion against a mafia cohort soon grows into the epic grandeur of a powerful woman defying deities. The details littered through the narrative give such a feeling of authenticity that I really felt like I was there, living these things with Jingwen. I cannot stress enough how stunned I was by the way the book enveloped me in its underworld.

In terms of sub-plots, there’s the hint of a love triangle that holds enough classic tropes to make it enjoyable for readers who enjoy a hint of romance, but also enough subversion that it doesn’t feel overly familiar or result in any eye rolls. Jingwen is embroiled with both the classic benefactor and the roguish bad boy, and each are given their fair share of page-time. But the way these relationships unfold is actually quite brilliant, and totally upends the way you think it’s going to go.

Daughter of Calamity has everything. Action. Thrills. Heart. An amazing protagonist. An atmosphere that oozes so many layers — it can leave you breathless at times and horrify you at others. It boasts a world I could read a hundred books about. But above all, it’s got the perfect balance between all these different things. Like the jazz that Jingwen dances to, it contains such a broad fusion of so many different elements, but it’s entirely unique and sounds like something totally new. The writing is so solid, and the skill with which the story holds together is so expert and artisanal, that it genuinely leaves my jaw hanging open when I consider this is a debut book!

Come for 1930s fantasy Shanghai, stay for bone-carving intrigue and wolf-mist-summoning shamans. And I haven’t even mentioned the thief who’s stealing body parts or mafia assassination-conspiracies! Seriously, this book has so much to it, if I was to address it all, you’d be reading an essay instead of a review!

Daughter of Calamity is not just a brilliant story, it’s a brilliant everything. I can’t praise Rosalie M. Lin enough for what she’s managed to accomplish with her first novel, and I seriously can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. ...more

If you’ve read Ten Low and Hel’s Eight (the first two books in the Factus series) then you’ll already know the grim and gritty glory that is Factus. It would have been so easy for this third book to retread all the familiar beats and dance to the same tune that we already love. There would’ve been little risk in taking that approach, and I’m sure it would’ve turned out to be a satisfying addition to the series. But Stark Holborn has done something truly courageous by transforming Ninth Life into a totally different beast to what we’ve seen before, changing its shape and giving us something completely fresh. And boy, does her gamble pay off!

This third standalone book is every bit as unforgiving, unrelenting, and unforgettable as you’d hope it to be. But it doesn’t rest on any laurels. Instead, it pushes the boundaries even further than I could ever have expected, leaving Factus behind as it forces us to go deeper into territories that are powerful, provocative, and more insular than anything we’ve experienced in this universe so far.

One of its biggest strengths is the structure. The way it’s been put together feeds the style of storytelling to such brilliant effect. This is, ostensibly, an archivist’s attempt to catalogue a history that is disappearing — the life of General Gabi Ortiz — who you’ll know already from Ten Low and Hel’s Eight. If they dished out awards for “best supporting character in a book”, Gabi would’ve already netted two of them for the way she was written in the preceding books. And here, in her own story, she still remains a supporting player as her account is told from various perspectives, and it works beautifully. The standout of these accounts is a young deputy marshal called Havemercy Grey, or Hav for short.

Hav starts out naive, but is taken on the kind of arc that could only belong to a Factus story. After arresting Gabi, Hav makes a deal to listen as Gabi talks, and in return, Gabi promises to come quietly. The book straddles two timelines — the adventure that follows as Hav attempts to deliver Gabi (AKA Nine Lives) to justice, and the events Gabi relates over the last eight of her deaths / lives, depending on how you look at it. This non-linear approach elevates both storylines brilliantly, and gives the book such a unique flavour — it’s addictive and delicious to read. You’ll find stories within stories within stories, but the whole thing feels so organic and relatable, rather than aloof or cerebral.

There’s an artistry to the way the events unfold, as well as the style in which they’re written. The pace is gorgeous. So much of the narrative feels like a love letter, with most of it being addressed to “you” rather than describing “her.” And I absolutely adored this aspect to the storytelling. It felt like I was reading a work of art — a glorious experiment from the imagination of a total genius.

I’m trying to find the right way to sum this book up, but there isn’t one. It’s magic. It’s electric. It’s menacing. It’s folkloric. It’s soulful. It’s meditative. It’s beautiful. Every word works, and that’s not an exaggeration — every single word feels exactly right. I won’t spoil the plot, but sufficed to say, it’s every bit as inventive as you’d expect. And the way it all ties up is *chef’s kiss*.

For those (like me) who have been fascinated by the Ifs, Ninth Life adds to their lore without ruining any of their mystery. I feel as though the clues we get through this third instalment have given me so much to speculate about, but also painted the clearest picture of them yet. The balance is precise and impressive. But so is everything about this book!

If Ninth Life doesn’t qualify as an instant classic and the best space western you’ll ever read, then I’ll eat my robot cowboy hat. It’s my favourite Factus book by far, and could be in my top five favourites of all time books in general. Stark Holborn hasn’t just knocked it out of the park with Ninth Life, she’s obliterated the field. Mesmerising, mind-blowing, and a total masterpiece, 10/10 doesn’t do it justice. I’m so glad Hav decided to listen to Gabi, because I wouldn’t want to live any of my nine lives without reading this non-stop, adrenaline-fuelled, deeply haunting thrill-ride. ...more

The book is split into two parts, with themes and personalities running through them both. What really works well is the immersive introduction into this strange new world, which you soon realise is more familiar than it first appears. Society is facing the dilemma of how to share resources, and deal with outsiders as well as dissenters from within.

Pilgrim Saltmire is a secretary who’s trying to honour his late professor’s work by finishing it. Seemingly ready to go to any length to do so, he soon ends up in an adventure all of his own. Pilgrim’s journey takes him back to his family before he’s banished to another tribe’s hearth. While sorting their library, he discovers a map that will change his life forever.

I enjoyed Pilgrim’s journey. He’s a complex character, and he makes a great introductory lens to see this twisty, layered world.

Long before the true nature of the people inhabiting the planet is revealed, McAuley builds a strong picture of what drives them and their approach to life. Working as a community is paramount and each member must contribute their share of work. When disciplined there is no need for binding or imprisoning as they always keep their word. They catalogue the treasures discovered from when the Bears enslaved them. (Yes, those are real bears!) They keep everything they find safe in their library for all people. But who really are they and how do they fit into the bigger picture? That’s where the mystery of the story lies, and the constant intrigue is what keeps you turning the pages. It’s handled with precision and makes for a compelling read.

The struggle between the natives and outsiders is a familiar theme which is approached with honesty. Both sides are presented in such a way that you can identify with all the characters. When the second part of the book starts from the perspective of Ysbel Moonsdaughter, an outsider, it feels a little awkward, but the strength of her character soon has you liking her, even if you don’t want to! Her mission to keep peace with the natives soon triggers a chain of events that further changes the course of history.

If you enjoy a book that makes you think from front to back then Beyond the Burn Line is for you. You won’t see the end coming! Immersing yourself in this reality is an escape that will leave its mark. It’ll burn a line through your imagination, and beyond. ...more

Aliens have built a hole that’s shielded by insane conditions, and four people are trying to walk there. But take a peek under the surface, and what do you find? One man’s journey through grief — and it’s absolutely soul-wrenching.

I loved everything about this book. How it built. How it resolved. How a thud coming from a big hole every 10.6 seconds resulted in characters speculating over the meaning of life. And in the midst of it all, a man trying to move on from the worst moment of his life. How he does that is where you’ll find the magic of this book.

For the characters, their journey to the hole can be a literal crawl, (surrounded by alien turtles, of all things) but for the reader, there’s so much suspense and tension and intrigue packed into every step, you’ll be riveted. My eyes were glued to the pages. And my heart took a battering as Alex’s trauma manifested itself through memory and determination.

There’s a definite build as the suspense mounts. One of the things I loved was how this is depicted on the page. Some clever formatting really aids the momentum. It never once lets you breathe. It forces you to the edge of your seat, but then it keeps on pushing, and you can sense the growing tension with every page-turn. But it never overwhelms or tires you. It reminds you that there’s an end in sight. And the payoff or all this build delivers in spades. The pacing is beyond perfect. To say that this is a true master at work is kind of putting it mildly.

Different characters open up a huge spectrum of speculation. The varying viewpoints and debates lead to philosophical conundrums in the midst of extreme conditions. It makes me wonder whether explorers striving to surmount an impossible voyage spend their time pondering impossible answers to impossible questions, because they’re constantly grasping for the impossible.

Fractal Noise is, on paper, a simple enough story. But in reality, it’s a deeply complex, rich, and visceral journey that’ll take you by surprise. Thrill rides don’t come more satisfying than this. It’s an absolute monster of a hole that’ll swallow you completely, packed with meaning and symbolism, and you’ll feel so rewarded for having taken the plunge. ...more

Ray Nayler’s debut, The Mountain In The Sea, made us look at an octopus with fresh eyes. His latest novella expands on all the things you loved about The Mountain In The Sea, and then some. It’s a perfect companion to it in many respects. Only, this time, it’s mammoths under the microscope.

The challenges of de-extinction make a fascinating backdrop on which to paint a complex study of what makes us human. There’s a nature to humanity, and it’s explored beautifully through the varying lenses of its three main characters.

If you’re wondering whether three different perspectives can be fully explored in the short length of a novella, then don’t worry — there’s substance packed into every sentence. Each character is given depth and realism, and the switch between them allows for some beautiful moments of juxtaposition and harmony. There’s a real beauty to the way they all come together, making the book feel more complete somehow.

Damira was the absolute standout for me. She’s a scientist (specialising in the study of elephants) whose consciousness has been uploaded into the body of a mammoth. The way her viewpoint changes from body to body, and how her new form impacts her is exquisitely rendered. I could feel her trunk, the thickness of her hide, and the sharp edge of her tusk, which is exactly the point. Every herd needs a leader, and Damira makes a superb one, not just for the mammoths, but for the reader too.

The prose is lush. The world is packed with futuristic details that make it feel both grounded and fun. There’s a real refinement to the way that Nayler hints at the wider world. A single word can change the whole landscape. Nothing is spoon-fed. His style has never been more impactful than it is here.

Ultimately, this is not just a cool take on the conservation challenges of the future, but a reminder that empathy holds true power, while also probing at its limits. When a species becomes aware of the challenges it faces to survive, it becomes accountable for the way it approaches those challenges. This novella didn’t just enhance my empathy for the elephants of the world, but it made me ponder the way in which humanity goes about the business of preservation. Life isn’t just about survival, it’s about the way we survive, and whether we can preserve our empathy as a species, or whether our ability for gentleness and compassion is heading for extinction. And in this respect, it performs an act of de-extinction — resurrecting the question of what makes us human by forcing us to consider how we treat the inhuman. It doesn’t feel preachy, but it definitely throws up more questions than you’d expect for a book of its size.

It may be short in length, but this novella is elephantine in its scope and depth. If you’re a fan of The Mountain In The Sea, you’ll enjoy the shape of these tusks. Both cerebral and heartfelt, The Tusks Of Extinction aims for both the head and heart, and it doesn’t miss. It’s a must-read for every fan of genre-bending, thought-provoking sci-fi. Let’s start with Elspeth. She’s the title of the book, after all. I’m a sucker for stories where doctors are the main characters. Always have been. But Elspeth is no ordinary doctor. She might just be the most soulful, complex, beautifully rendered doctor I’ve ever encountered in fiction, and I fell in love with her. You will, too. She’s amazing.

Wick Welker’s medical background really shines through. The jargon and language of medicine is expertly employed to ground the book in things we’re familiar with. It doesn’t read like a medical textbook — it’s always entertaining and refreshing to read — but what’s especially brilliant is that it gives the book a layer of authenticity that pulls us into the world, keeping the story focussed on humanity and humans amidst the mysterious presence of alien beings.

In terms of the world itself — wow! There are so many flavours to this post-apocalyptic hellscape. At times, the descriptions of settings and characters reminded me of the movies Annihilation, Mad Max 2, and I Am Legend. We begin with a compound where Elspeth treats people in her makeshift hospital, but a trip to replenish supplies from the ruins of the closest cities opens up a sense of wonder about the world, and Elspeth’s place in it. The more you read, the more the setting and atmosphere expands. And it’s all just so cool.

I’m not going to spoil the plot, or reveal any of the secrets of the book, but let’s just say that all the questions that are posed at the start of the story have layers of meaning, and by the final page, you’ll not so much have neat answers, but you’ll look at the questions in a different way — and that, in itself, makes this an absolute tour de force of speculative fiction. It feels satisfying and worthwhile and important without ever getting preachy. I loved it.

Of course, the hook of the story surrounds the mystery of why the aliens arrived and then did nothing. If you love aliens, and that’s your reason for reading the book, then stick with it. You might have to wait a while, but Saint Elspeth tackles the alien aspects of its story with the kind of imagination and invention that will reward you for your patience, and then some.

Every aspect of this book blew me away. Wick Welker has written some great stories in his career, but this one is his magnum opus. If you’ve got a soft spot for medical drama and a thirst for sci-fi, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more perfect book than this. Michael Crichton, eat your heart out.
