I was going through my ‘M/M read’ shelf in the hopes that I'd find anything interesting to re-read and I came across this one; I didn't remember what it fully was about. Though the more I read, the more I remembered. The thing is, the book is not bad; it centers around two men falling in love in a world where you'd be killed (horribly) for being a sodomite. There's a war, deaths, religion and royalty. However, it feels really long simply because of the way it's written. It's almost like you're with the character; connected and all, and like you're on the outside at the same time, which can make things stressful and feel like it's taking forever to finish. It's still a interesting story that I'd recommend if you like some M/M in a historical world. New Rating: 3 stars Quotes From The Book (Contains Spoilers): (view spoiler)[ “More medals?” “I am a king now, Niko. Everything I say is obeyed; everything I want is given to me. I have so much power that I think I will swell up and burst sometimes. You are the only one who reminds me of what I really am, the only one who will tell me when I am wrong. You are my king, Niko, and I need you. Please do this for me.” I, Christian, appoint you, Nikolai, Chief Minister of Hesse-Davia and Saxefalia, with all accordant rights. Do you solemnly swear to govern the Peoples according to their laws and customs?” He looked completely magnificent, every inch a king, in beautiful clothes that I wished to rip off him very roughly. So I knelt once more to him. If he found this amusing, no one would have known from his expression. He looked very serious as he pulled out his sword.(hide spoiler)] Other Characters: → Faelan, a Tamask dog from a land far to the north of here. Looks like a wolf? Is a wolf? → Lord Salisbury, a patient of Niko. Madame Costain (wife to one of Hesse-Davia’s ministers) and Lady Caroline, the Lord's sisters. → King Gregor Alexander Philip Mountberg of Hesse-Davia and Aleksey's father. His queen died giving birth to Aleksey, their youngest son. The heir, His Royal Highness Prince George Charles Willheim (33), Aleksey's brother. The brothers have a rocky relationship because George blamed, not unnaturally perhaps, for his mother’s death. The king blamed everyone but himself for her demise, and so the family, according to Niko's hostess (Madame Costain), limped along with no love lost between any of them. (view spoiler)[Both king Gregor and prince George dies close to the end of the book, making Aleksey the king. (hide spoiler)] → Doctor Jules Lyons, French, a doctor who was summoned to try and save the king. → Stephen Eric Peter Mountberg (9, turns 10), Niko's page (servant) at the castle. He's the bastard child of Prince Peter. He was the king's oldest brother, but he’s dead now. The king had two living brothers: Harold, who was never to be called Hal, and John, who was a fool, according to Stephen. (view spoiler)[When Aleksey becomes king after the death of the heir and king, he pronounced Stephen as the legitimate and rightful heir to the throne of Hesse-Davia and Saxefalia and bestowed upon him all rights appertaining to him; is now a Prince. (hide spoiler)] → Princess Anastasia (19?), Aleksey fiancée. → Gregory, a friend of Aleksey. Sebastian (4?), Gregory's son. Pia, Gregory's wife. Gregory was the cook. He was also the proprietor of the inn and headman of the small village. (view spoiler)[Gregory gets appointed as minister for works when Aleksey becomes king. (hide spoiler)] → Colonel Johan, a colonel in Aleksey’s army and a close ‘friend’ of Aleksey. → Xavier, Niko's warhorse. → Mark, a boy who hanged out with Aleksey when Aleksey first saw Niko. When we emerged from the tub, I asked Aleksey where I was to sleep, and he took my hand and led me to a large bedchamber with one huge bed hung with curtains. He looked at me and pouted a little. “I had thought that we would be more intimate by this stage—that you would be content to share a bed with me. I’m sorry. Perhaps you would—” I caught him around the waist, heaved him into the air, and, ignoring his furious objection to being so manhandled, dumped him on the bed, then straddled him. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*A dangerous royal affair* ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Doctor Nikolai ‘Niko’ Hartmann (35, becomes 36 at the end of the book) and youngest son (General His Royal Highness the) Prince Christian Aleksey (23, becomes 24 at the end of the book) met after what Nikolai believes was a bandit. He didn't not expect to met the man again. Specially not while doctoring the King and the man is the prince. An arrogant but beautiful prince. A prince that is just as fascinated with the doctor as the doctor is in the prince. But just because Aleksey is a prince doesn't that mean that Nikolai treats him as one. Soon they find themselves riding for war, sharing a tent... Two men loving each other is a sin, are the two men ready to say 'screw the rules' and just love? I determined there and then not to underestimate this prince of mine again. He was not vacuous and flighty, as he liked to give the impression he was. And why was I calling him my prince? He was strong wine: something I thought about consuming but knew would be bad for me. What a... strange, but quite interesting book this was. I must say I was pleasantly surprised at this. Though this wasn't the best book I've read - historical or M/M - it was still one of the better books I've read so far this year. Which is saying something. But as always, something was yet again missing. I believe that it might be because of the writing. Although some parts were written good, there was still some ‘annoyingness’ there. Perhaps it was the constant feeling of things being shortened or cut, like it could've been a bit deeper? I dunno. Anyway the ending felt a bit rushed. I dunno, I liked it, the ending that is, but I wanted a little bit more from it. I felt like the climax wasn't as high as it should've been. Overall, the story was fascinating. Some scenes were horrific; the war and the descriptions of them, yet Nikolai and Aleksey's love was adorable. I had come a long way to forget, a long way for a new beginning. You cannot have one of those, I suppose, without an ending, and there had been no real ending. I had the horror inside still, carried all the way from that accursed country to this new one. I actually liked this one. One of the better books by Mary Calmes. The story is about a bull-rider/homeless drifter and successful neurosurgeon. Weber “Web” Yates' (44) big dream was to be a successful bull-rider, but with his age and no sponsors, he has decided to give up on that dream, making him a drifter who can't seem to get a curtain surgeon out of his head. Cyrus “Cy” Benning (42) only wants Web to come to the conclusion that he and Cy belong together, that Cyrus is Web's home and vice versa. When Web makes contact again after 7 months or so, Cy is ready to make him see the truth.... “All I want is for you to realize that what you do does not dictate the kind of man you are. What you do and who you are, are two separate things.” The characters were well liked. I liked the connection between the two; Cy and Web were good for each other. But thinking you are less and that the other person deserves better, can easily come between things. Though both of them love each other, one of them doesn't believe it's enough; what if, now that things a different, he loses interest? What if he gets tired of him? When one believe he is a frog a not a prince and the other is a prince... it takes a toll on one. “Jesus, Weber,” he said, and his voice was broken and needy and surrendering. “Baby, I respect you more than anyone else I know. You have done everything you wanted, your way, and you went for your dream instead of just sitting on your ass and talking about it.” The thing is; so many people are like Weber. They believe they aren't worth it, that people can do better than them. Truth is: they don't. What Weber doesn't have in money, he makes up with his kind mind, good manners, a great person. He's just a man who never found his home, his safety. It's so sad to watch people judge other because of money. Money doesn't define a person. Rich or poor, it doesn't matter, how you are as a person, does. “I’m so sorry, Cy. Just when the damn thing was healin’, I show up and tear off the bandage and make it start to bleed all over again.” I really liked, though, Cyrus's dedication to Web. He knew what a good man he is, how kind he is, how lovable... He knew he had the biggest heart and he just wanted it. I loved how he was trying to make Web see his worth, see how much he meant to him, how much Web is his world, his home. It was rather beautiful, really. That kind of dedication says a lot of the man himself. Cyrus was awesome, good and could be cold to those he didn't know. He was also a very private man. Hard working and lonely, loving a man who wasn't ready to open his eyes and see the love. Cyrus and Weber should get another book... “Well, I’m not.” Overall, it was adorable. Web with the kids, with the sister, with the family, with him being a mountain for them. You really got the meaning of a kind, sweet and beautiful man. And you see it's appreciated. It was much love in this book, much cheesiness and cuteness. Perhaps a bit too cliché, but it worked. Frog was a easy, sweet, very light read. I liked it. I didn't love it, but I did like it. I didn't get bored even though much didn't happen. It was just a nice read. I watched the dogs lying beside the crackling fireplace and decided that someday I would have the same thing. Smaller and probably just one dog, but the same warm family home. It was my dream. I love seeing Aleksey and Niko grow closer in mind, but am I the only one who thinks they still have some way to go? I wish the author would've written another book for the series, where, perhaps, the men will return to Hesse-Davia and start changing how the world - or at least the kingdom - sees a gay relationship. I feel like Aleksey reclaiming his throne, he'd do a whole lot of good... Other Characters: → Mary (looks about 15), was a widow from England before marrying the Reverend Wright very soon after her arrival—the other three young men are his sons: Jacob, Samuel, and Martin. The reverend—he is to be the new pastor, apparently, in the outpost. She is hardly more than a child and her now husband is 'gray of beard', and she's mother of that odd child, David (5). → Major Frederick Parkinson, nice and fat? That's all Aleksey would say about him. → Captain Jonathan ‘John’ Rochester and Lieutenant Owen McIntyre. John is the older one, as he came up through the ranks. Captain Roderick Fallkirk, the one who is staying at Aleksey's Kingdom with the horses. He has a limp. → Onekwenhtara ‘Etienne’ Okwaho, friend of Niko? Lives with his tribe (Mik’mac?). → Boudica, Aleksey's warhorse. Freedom, Boudica and Xavier (Niko's warhorse) foal. → Faelan, a Tamask dog from a land far to the north of here. Looks like a wolf? Is a wolf? (view spoiler)[Gets killed; this should've not happen. So sad. (hide spoiler)] I felt myself drifting to sleep, so pulled his face up to kiss him before I did and then frowned. His cheeks were wet with tears. I could taste them as I kissed him. I held him off. “What is wrong? Have I done something to upset you?” I was fairly sure I had not, for once, which was why I risked asking this. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*A truer, stronger bond* ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: Doctor Nikolai ‘Niko’ Hartmann (38) and (His Majesty King) Christian Aleksey Frederik Mountberg (26) finally have the freedom to be themselves, to love and cherish each other after all they've been through since they met in Hesse-Davian. Of course, that's not to last; Aleksey has heard whispers about people disappearing into thin air and the place abandoned, he has decided to accompany a group of people to solve this mystery. Nikolai has no choice but to tag along. The mystery, however, proves to be just a trap. Can Nikolai and Aleksey get through this and come out stronger? “Why is the world like this, Niko? We came here and said this was my kingdom and that my law applied here, but nothing has changed. We still have to pretend that we are not what we are to each other. I see you so upset at dinner, and I want to hold you and ask you what is wrong, as I would be able to if you were my wife. We ride side by side all day, and I want them to think what a beautiful couple we are and aren’t I lucky to have you, and other such nonsense that people think about two people who are in love. But none of that is for us, is it? We hide and lie and pretend and it is all shit!” Overall, the story was interesting enough. I'm not sure if I liked this one less than the first one, but I liked Nikolai and Aleksey and I loved seeing them getting stronger and closer than ever. I adore their love and loyalty towards each other. However, I wish we had gotten more in the end. I wished we had gotten more... closure for the couple, because I felt like there's room for more story. Is it also wrong for me to want Aleksey back on the throne, to rule with Nikolai by his side? I certainly want that... More of the two of them, more of their journey and hopefully a reunion. What can I say about living with Aleksey that would capture one fraction of the ecstasy and fury that are my everyday lot? I had to force myself to re-read Jane's books because I didn't remember all that much from it - that should've been a clue not to re-read it but you know me. That said, the book wasn't all that bad. I love seeing Moffy finally truly let himself love Farrow completely. I understand why I was disappointed the first time around, but I'm glad I still find this an enjoyable read. Still don't like Charlie though. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Sadly Disappointed*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: The review: I truly don't know what to say. Strangely, I'm not all that happy with this book. While it had it's cute moments and I love seeing Marrow so close, the story itself was boring. Nothing big happened and frankly, it was a bit... predictable. I'm sad to say I actually struggled to not skim. The story didn't pull me in like I had hoped, even though I love Marrow. It might be because I'm still a little bit sick, or because my eyes are hurting me (they're so dry) that keeps me from focusing, or it might be that it seems like I'm in a deep reading slump again and this book wasn't enough to get get me out, or it might just be that the book simply didn't work for me. Who knows. Even I find myself a mystery, so that's saying something. Overall, while it had some awesome moments, even made me teary at some point, I just wanted the book to be finished. Hell the struggle to focus actually gave me a headache :O This is not to say that the book was bad in any way at all. Most people probably love it a lot. However, for me, it just wasn't good enough at this time. Maybe if I re-read it sometime in the future it'll be better? Anyways, though this one wasn't for me, that doesn't mean I'm in any way ready to say goodbye to Marrow. I'll miss them. Their love is beautiful and nothing can compare to that. I am however, looking forward to Oscar Oliveira & Jack Highland's book. I do love a straight man falling for a man theme. Also am I the only one who doesn't ship Donnelly & Luna? I totally can't see them together at all. As friends sure, but more? Hell no. I actually want Donnelly with Beckett for some reason..... While his brothers - being ambitious - decided to leave the small town called Cove, Jonah decided to say, to finish his degree, become a qualified vet, and take over their father’s practice and the shelter. Two years later the alpha of the Azure Grove Pack, Nate Williams and what is left of his pack (17 people), are on the run from the Alpha Prime, Magnar, who had moved against their pack, branded them all traitors. Any pack in their territory would be rewarded for capturing or killing them and punished for sheltering them. Which means that they need to stay under the radar and steer clear of other pack territories. “Enough.” Harlan, as the eldest, had always had a knack for ending their squabbles. “Look, Jonah, I know you don’t want us to leave. I get that, I really do. But we have to face facts. There hasn’t been another of our kind seen in what, twelve years now? And we’ve been a dying breed for a lot longer. Our only chance of survival in this world is integration. Become part of the human world and forget about where we came from.” Nate feels like he's nowhere ready to be an alpha, having just turned 21, but being the lone alpha left in the pack, the responsibility rests on him. Nate decides that the best plan for survival is to go to the Cove; a forbidden zone in the southeast. The land has been off limits to wolves for years. Generations. Little did he know that he'll meet Jonah, a beautiful human he can't seem to get out of his mind. But not everything is as it seems... Overall, it's a cute and simple book. Really straight forward and easy to read. Makes the time go. The characters were simple too. Cute and nice. My problem with the book is the lack of depth. Though we get to know some of the characters, we barely really get to know them. We know who they are, their names and that's it. We don't get any friendships with prober depth even though they are said to be a close pack. I didn't feel it. It all felt like we only saw the surface. So yeah, I needed more depth, but it was an easy read with not a lot happening, yet it was so fast forward that it didn't really bother me. Though I didn't quite like how fast the ending was and how things felt unsolved. Not sure if I'll continue reading the series though. Also, I liked to say that I wish it had more magic in it. Meaning; the feeling of this being a magical book with magical creatures like werewolves and sirens/mermans. “I like who I am,” Jonah replied. “I’m proud of where we came from. I’m not going to just walk away and let our family’s legacy die with our father.” The (view spoiler)[ The Cove; a forbidden zone in the southeast. The land has been off limits to wolves for years. Generations. Every territory had places wolf packs were warned to keep away from. They’d all heard the stories about shifters being injured or killed by things much stronger than them, strange creatures, monsters that lurked in the dark. It was an old joke. If humans were afraid of werewolves, then what were werewolves afraid of?(hide spoiler)] Magnar, Alpha Prime: (view spoiler)[ “Werewolves live in packs, like big extended families. Packs are grouped into huge areas of land called territories, and every territory has a senior alpha who oversees everything. That’s the Alpha Prime. The current Alpha Prime of our territory is Magnar. He was an outsider, from the territory south of ours. He mated an omega in a pack here, made allies, then challenged the previous Alpha Prime and won. That was a year ago. Since then, he’s done a lot of things that made my father uneasy. He uses violence where words would do. He’s used his Enforcer to carry out attacks as punishment or revenge when people defy him.”(hide spoiler)] Little Sirens Information: (view spoiler)[ “As we said before, our people are similar to yours. Like wolves, we have a hierarchy.”(hide spoiler)] Other Characters: It's a long list, so I'll just add it into a spoilers tag. (view spoiler)[→ Harlan (the eldest) and Theo, Jonah's brothers. In the two years since they left, neither of them had set foot in the Cove. From the occasional phone call or email, Jonah got the impression things were going well for both of them. Theo’s career was taking off. Harlan was busy building his business. It didn’t seem like they’d looked back even once after they’d left. Jonah didn’t just feel left behind, he felt… forgotten. → Logan and his brother Jason ‘Jay’, Nate's cousins, both betas. Karla, Jay's mate. → Lily ‘Lil’, Nate's sister. Jack, their brother who got killed in the attack. → Maddie, one of the youngest survivors (toddler), and her father, Mac and mother, Alison (dead). → Fred, pack member. → Scott, a beta with a bad tendency to act like an alpha. (view spoiler)[Betrayed the back. Dead. (hide spoiler)] → Stefan, had been working for Jonah’s father part-time before his death. Afterward, he had agreed to continue that partnership with Jonah. For two years, he’d run the practice while Jonah studied and helped out whenever he could. But Stefan’s wife had got an opportunity to advance her career and the whole family had decided to move five hours north. Stefan had delayed leaving to give Jonah time to finish his studies, moving into the house for the last few months to save money on rent. → Bear, Jonah's chocolate Labrador (she). → Justin Harte, Jonah's neighbor. → Parker Jeffreys, the town’s vet for the bigger animals. Lives north of the town. → Betty, pack member. → Cole, pack member. → Jade, pack member. → Wendy, the veterinary nurse who works two days a week in Jonah's practice to help with surgeries. → Lucien, the Enforcer of Magnar, the Alpha Prime, his right-hand man. → Mylea, an old siren. → Jeremy ‘Jem’, pack member, alpha. He was staying with his aunt and uncle in another pack when the attack on Nate's pack happened. Nate hopefully, hope he’s still there, out of harm’s way. → (view spoiler)[Jack, Jonah and Nate's son; half wolf, half siren. Noah struggles with his past; Rick, his boyfriend died and this has cause some demons to appear. Ky is struggling with the fact that he's gay and no one knows, not even his sister. It's not because he is a coward, it's because his stepdad gave him a ultimatum and Ky doesn't want to cause his sisters pain. But Noah makes him want things he never thought he'd have, and Noah is scared allergic to relationships. Overall, I felt nothing for the book. I didn't like the characters much, I didn't feel any emotions towards them, nor did I feel like there was any connection between the characters. I didn't like Noah; I don't like people who use alcohol for everything. But the main reason for not really liking this book is that I don't feel anything for it. Skimming/re-read: 09.06.2021
I just skimmed this one fast to see more of Lucas and Andrei's relationship process. That said, I know I would've like Skimming/re-read: 09.06.2021 I just skimmed this one fast to see more of Lucas and Andrei's relationship process. That said, I know I would've liked this book much much more if it was a standalone, away from Lucas' world. Andrei is quite frankly the best character in the sense that he has a beautiful soul, Lucas is the sexiest and Snow is the gorgeous vulnerable. Problem is, while I love Andrei, and I love him with Lucas, I also absolutely ship Lucas with Snow. I feel that Jude is replacing Lucas in Snow's life and I don't like it. I also didn't like that some of Lucas' authority went down a bit because of Jude. Overall, I skimmed everything except parts of Lucas and Andrei. I didn't "re-read" (if you can even call it that since I skimmed it so much) for Snow and Jude's story. That isn't so say their story is bad, I just wasn't interested in it with this "re-read". So in the end, I didn't really re-read this book, I just followed Andrei and Lucas' story, if you know what I mean... And also, am I the only one who kinda don't like that the family is extending so much? Fuck, am I cold or what!? I just loved the closeness the guys had... [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*I'm a horrible person*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Man, I have a feeling that I could've like this book so much if it was a complete standalone novel and not a part of a series standalone. I mean, I'm a miserable and horrible person who got too attached to the friendship more than the relationship between the main characters. Without that need for the friendship between my doves, then I might have adore this one a lot. But as I got too little of said doves and I didn't get the representation of said doves, I wasn't all that happy. That isn't to say I didn't still enjoy the book, because I did. The second book in this series centers around doctor (Maverick trauma surgeon), Ashton ‘Snow’ ‘General’ Frost (37) and paramedic at UC Hospital, Jude Torres (30). They were hot and cute together, but I wish we had gotten more of the family together. And of course my doves, Snow and Lucas. Need more of them and their special and unbreakable bond. These feelings and emotions swamped him. Years of hidden hopes and dreams… and that joy… that devastating and.. so very, very new joy… came and it took Snow out of himself long enough to feel truly connected to someone else for the first time in his life. Other characters: ↦ Lucas ‘Luc’ Vallois (38), self-made millionaire and owner of many properties, has worked his way up to be one of the most powerful men in the city Cincinnati. Snow's closest friend, the one he sees as his brother. Their bond is quite special. I only wish we had gotten more of their special relationship. I kinda adore him. He's hot, sexy, dominant, alpha male. Probably my favorite character in the series. ↦ Andrei Hadeon (mid-twenties?), professional mixed martial arts fighter until an injury a few years ago, now works for Rowe as a bodyguard, and is thoroughly trained in close-quarter combat, a variety of weapons, and defensive driving. He's cool. I like that he doesn't take shit. ↦ Rowan ‘Rowe’ Ward (how old?), owner of Ward Security and who Snow and Lucas met after Army basic training and the three men had been stuck together ever since, and now does security. I don't know if I like him all that much; not my type. His wife, Melissa ‘Mel’ Ward (view spoiler)[dies early in this book, which means that we don't see much of Rowe. (hide spoiler)] ↦ Ian ‘E’ Pierce (25), chef and owner of Rialto restaurant (just opened) and the one the group sees as their little brother. He seems adorable and you can't help but want to protect him. ↦ Detective for the Cincinnati Police Department, Hollis Banner (how old?), seems a bit annoying, yet I believe he's supposed to be a somewhat bad boy? I dunno. Might like him in his own book.. ↦ Dwight Gratton, a bad ghost from the group's past, (works with audition away young boys?). Also the one who tortured Ian. Hired by a bad man called Jagger. “I want it all.” Quick basic facts: Genre: - (Adult) Contemporary Romance (M/M) Series: - Series (Standalone?), Book Two Love triangle? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] Cheating? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] HEA? - (view spoiler)[Yes, I think? Seventh re-read: 19.10.2021
I know so many people are on the fence about this book, it being so unhealthy, but you know what? I don't care. I love Seventh re-read: 19.10.2021 I know so many people are on the fence about this book, it being so unhealthy, but you know what? I don't care. I love it. The codependency and the possessiveness is so hot. [image] Sixth re-read: 25.03.2021 Don't give me those eyes. I can't help it. I just had to. It's been over a freaking YEAR since I've re-read this one and it just felt wrong. It really can't be a damn year... [image] Fifth re-read: 21.02.2020 That's it. I'm the one who's having an unhealthy relationship with this series. I keep re-reading it! It's like I can't stop. It's annoying me that I'm obsessed with this series. I need more, I crave more and each (re-)read is leaving unfulfilled. I'm guessing it won't be long until I'm re-reading it again.. [image] Forth re-read: 09.08.2019 Is it wrong that I want someone to be so possessive over me as Gabriel is over Jared? Is it? Anyways, I can't believe I've read this book five times now, and I still enjoy it. This series is addictive and obviously unhealthy to me :P Anyways, I wish we get a sequel to each couple (though some I couldn't care less for *cough Tristan cough*), because one book each isn't enough. I most want another book for couple in book one, two and in this one. There's just something about their relationships. This review is becoming really long with all the re-reads I'm doing... [image] Third re-read: 26.01.2019 Jesus, can you believe I've read this book FOUR FREAKING TIMES? As I had re-read (again) book one and two, I couldn't not re-read this one as well. Of course I couldn't skip this one. I do love this toxic relationship and Jared and Gabriel is kinda great. I love Gabriel's possessiveness, it's the best part of the whole book. But yeah, I need more from this book though. I really hope the author one day decide to give us a sequel for each couple, specially this one (hell specially the first three books in the series). I also see a tons of reviews were they don't like this book. And I can totally understand it as the first time I read this one, I didn't like it all that much. [image] But the more I read it, the more I like it. It's the same with the whole series. I just gets better each time I read it and this time was no different. Highly recommend everyone to re-read the series :P Though, for some reason I hate Tristan. He's such an ugly person inside. A bully in a way, a liar and a horrible person who hides behind a smile. Can't stand him. So weird, since everyone else loves him. But I'm going to give his book a second chance and hope I like it more than the first time around.... Good luck to me. Gabriel lifted his gaze to him, his eyes the only color on his pale face. “You told me to walk on my own.” A crooked smile curled his lips. “That was me walking on my own. I think I did pretty well, don’t you think? I scored two goals.” [image] Second re-read: 18.10.2018 Is it weird that I re-read this one again? I mean, this is a seriously unhealthy relationship, yet I crave it. I love Gabriel's possession of Jared. L O V E it. I wish I could find more books like that. The book is actually written quite well, but it should've had more scenes with (view spoiler)[Jules, Gabriel and Jared together (hide spoiler)]. All these books in the series feels like a prequel for each couple. Seriously, there should be two books for every couple. That way you really get a sense of a bond and relationship. Overall, what am I doing re-reading this series again? I weird. I can't help it. It was so much potential. Don't think I'll re-read Tristan's book though. I don't like the fucker. Btw, my rating keeps getting better for each read.... New Rating: 3 stars. “You’re a weirdo,” he said, stroking Gabriel’s nape and dropping a kiss in his hair. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*So lacking in depth, but I couldn't find anything else*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Re-read: 11.04.2018 I'm lost. I can't find anything to read. Nothing AT ALL. I'm going mad. So I just picked something. And picked this one. Strangely it wasn't so bad as I remember, but there's so much missing. The lack of depth is pretty much killing the book. I wish, though, that more authors would right book with a story like this one; friends (best friends) so overly possessive and needy, and touchy with each other, while still being straight. Until they aren't anymore. I crave those kind of stories. Probably why I ended up choosing this one again. “I’m not depressed,” Gabriel said again, as if repeating this would make it true. “I’m just…I just have to wait it out. It will pass. It will. Jared said so.” Gabriel and Jared isn't healthy when it comes to each other, but it works for them. I just wished we had gotten more depth. Specially with (view spoiler)[Gabriel and his son (hide spoiler)]. The lack of that just didn't work for me. Also I wish that there had been some... fight or at least Gabriel finding out (view spoiler)[that Claire trapped him by getting pregnant on purpose, she even admitted it in her own POV. There should've been some consequences for her. (hide spoiler)]. New Rating - 3/2.5 stars. “Jay, don’t do this. Please. I can’t—I can’t—” Other characters: ↦ Claire, a model and Gabriel's girlfriend. Seems dumb and naive. ↦ (view spoiler)[Jules, Gabriel and Claire's son. Don't really get to know the baby. One of the things that bothered me. (hide spoiler)] ↦ Tristan DuVal, Gabriel's adopted brother. A dick. Egoistical. ↦ Zach Hardaway, one of the best physiotherapists and fitness trainers in Europe. ↦ Rebecca ‘Becca’, Jared secretary. ↦ Paul Mewes, coach for the football team. ↦ Oscar Mone, an American footballer and (view spoiler)[Jared's boyfriend for a time (hide spoiler)]. “You know the most fucked up part?” Gabriel said, his voice muffled a little. “If Claire falls in love with someone else, I’ll let her go. It would suck, but I would respect her decision. Because I want her to be happy. But it’s different with you. When I imagine you loving someone else—someone else being more important to you than me—it drives me mad. You’re mine. Mine and no one else’s.” His hand fisted Jared’s shirt. His voice became tight. “It’s fucking silly, but I honestly feel like—like you were created for me and no one else has the right to have you.” Gabriel chuckled, still hiding his face in Jared’s shoulder. “Say it: I’m a weirdo. I’m sick.” [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*A bit disappointed*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: Strange enough, this one was my least likable in this series. Strange, you wonder? Well, I L O V E possessive men and rising soccer star Gabriel ‘Gabe’ ‘Gabi’ ‘Gavriil’ DuVal (20-21) was so possessive of team physician (the Head of Sports Medicine at a top Premier League club) Jared ‘Jay’ Sheldon (30). However, something just didn't work. But yeah, I loved their connection, Gabriel's possessiveness and neediness for Jared and I adored Jared's heart. Yet, I didn't like the selfishness. I dislike selfish people, yet I still understand Gabriel. Overall, I hated Tristan (Gabriel's adoptive brother), I wanted to see the couple being a couple. I wanted more of a closure. Uncertain if I actually want to read Tristan's book. Gabriel bit the inside of his cheek, feeling a physical ache in his gut. He became acutely aware of the sound of the clock’s ticking. Time, slipping away. Quick basic facts: Genre: - (Adult) Contemporary Romance (M/M) Series: - Series (Standalone?), Book Three. Love triangle? - (view spoiler)[Not really. There was no competition of who would've been chosen. (hide spoiler)] Cheating? - (view spoiler)[Umm, Gabriel kisses Jared while being with Claire. He does tell her he wants to make Jared happy no matter what. (hide spoiler)] HEA? - (view spoiler)[Yes, I do believe so. (hide spoiler)] Favorite character? - Jared ‘Jay’ Sheldon. Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Sure. Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure. Will I read this again in the future? - No.. Rating - 2.5 stars. ...more |

I like how much closer Marrow is, how much more Moffy lets himself rely on Farrow. I want a Marrow love for myself. [image] Third re-read: 10.11.2020 Marrow is beautiful. I think I could've read 10 books about them. Even if the story itself is a bit boring, Marrow is worth it. Technically I should lower the stars to three, but I can't make myself do it, so I'll just do it in writing instead. New Rating: 3/3.5 stars. [image] Second re-read: 27.12.2018 I know, I know; I just read it. So what. Anyways, can you believe that we'll be getting more of Maximoff and Farrow? The only problem is the fact that we have to read 2 more book before getting to them. TWO M/F books of Thatcher and Jane, and for some reason I don't like Jane all that much. She's okay as a side-character, but as a main? Not for me. Doesn't seem all that interesting as Me and Jane isn't seeing eye to eye. I find her a messy character that doesn't do it for me. So this is gonna suck. #Team Marrow! I just gotta say one thing though; I love the family love, how close they are. Specially Maximoff and Xander. [image] → Book 1 to 3 - Maximoff and Farrow (M/M) -> Available → Book 4 to 5 - Jane and Thatcher (M/F) -> Coming Soon → Book 6 - Maximoff and Farrow (M/M) → Book 7 - Oscar and Jack (M/M) → Book 8 - Sullivan and Akara (M/F) Quotes From Book: (view spoiler)[ Jane slides over the dirty martini. “Here, Sulli,” she says. “I’ve named this drink You Can’t Say No To A Stubborn Maximoff.” Oscar narrows his eyes at Kinney. “This is news to me. We could bring a date to this thing?” He lifts up his pint glass. Oscar slow-claps and then cranes his neck past us to glance at the bar. “What do we know about Highland?” I sheath his cheek with my hand, his emotion fighting to break through. Fuck, I just want to hold him. Love him. Be there for him when his aristocratic grandmother turns heel. She gears up to chuck another pillow.(hide spoiler)] [image] Re-read: 06.09.2018 Is is bad that I want more? So, so SO much more of these two? Because I do. A lot. I want like 3 to 6 more books of just them. Seriously, I'm not kidding. 3 ain't enough. They are awesome and their love for one another is beautiful . However, one thing is bothering me and it isn't the book. It's the fact that the authors have hinted at us getting more of these two later in the goddamn future. As in, I have to wait possible 100 years before I get any AND I have to read the others in the family's books as well. Which, to be honest, I'm actually not interested in. Specially not M/F. If it's M/M, I might consider. But again, I have to wait and who knows how long I have to wait. And possibly loose interest.... I try to explain in my own words, and I gesture to his chest. “It's in your bones; it's what keeps you alive. The foundation of your body. To suck out all the marrow of life... I think about how Thoreau went into the woods and stripped life to the barest necessities. To learn what life is really made of, the feeling of water slipping between fingers, the chilled glass in my hand, the wind that rustles your damn hair. And I think about how I feel these barest things every day with you. To live life at its most essential level so as to fully live.” [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Beautiful, yet I want more*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ We're back with billionaire Maximoff ‘Moffy’ ‘wolf scout’ Hale (22, turns 23 in the end of the book) and bodyguard Farrow Redford Keene (28)'s story. God I love these two and strangely book three - this one - was my favorite. It's highly usually for me to like the second or third in the series than the first. But I did. The series only got better. And I can't wait for more of ‘Marrow’. Overall, this book was awesome, part heartbreaking and part beautiful and the couple's love for each other were perfect and I absolutely love the family love. I'm not sure I'm interested in reading book #4 as it doesn't center around my babies though. Luckily, it seems like we're getting another novel of them. “We’re so deeply invested and in love with these two, and we’re committed to bringing their wedding to life in their own POVs. So when we feel like the timing is right in the Like Us Series timeline, there will be another Maximoff & Farrow novel.” - Krista Ritchie and Becca Ritchie. “Dum spiro, spero,” he reads the Cicero quote. Sure, it was straight forward, easy to read, not much depth and a easy plot (if you can call it a plot...), but since there was little depth, you didn't really get to know the characters deeply or personally (same with book #1). The book centers around bounty hunter Roman ‘Quick’ Webb (45? 49? How old?) and Dr. Cayson ‘Cays’ Chauncey (39? 40? How old?). These two met in the previous book when Cays was Quick's son's and his best friend's doctor. Quick didn't like how he reacted towards the doctor, making him feel alive and such, and treated Cays badly. “I’m also not concerned with tricks or seduction. Just show me you, Rome. I’ll be able to see through an act. I’ve had enough men act a certain way to get a certain something. I’m done with actors. Promise you’ll be real.” No more guys acting concerned, acting in love, acting… straight. He needed… wanted a real man. Now that Quick has finally realized that Cays might be his shot at a happy ending, he has to do everything he can to convince the doctor to forgive him and give him another shot. That won't be easy, because Cays will never let a man walk all over him again. Also, there's his ex-‘boyfriend’, Dr. Joe. (though it was more of an arrangement) who refused to accept that they are over. Overall, the story was predicable, most parts boring, there's the insta-lust AND insta-love and little personal connection between readers and characters.
Though Quick is probably usually my type; as he was dominant and a little bit controlling, strong and sure of himself, a alpha male, I still didn't fall in love with him. Sure, I liked him alright, but nothing special. Cays just wanted love and caring in his life and someone who isn't embarrassed to be seen out with him. He's not all doormat, but he's far from a alpha male. More of a submissive, in this relationship. He, too, was nothing special for me. I'm not sure if I want to continue the series. If Joe acted like he wanted to hurt his sweet doctor, then Quick was going to stick the entire barrel of his pistol in his mouth and make him deep throat it like the pussy he was, then he’d pistol whip him with it. Yep. That was Quick. Fuck with someone he considered important, and a side of him no one wanted to meet came out. I am surprised at the potential the book had and I am a little disappointed with story. However it was still alright. Book one in ‘Through Hell and Back’ centers around ruthless and high-powered attorney Asher ‘Ash’ Davis (in his thirties?) and Dr. Drew ‘D’ Klein (in his thirties? 34? 36?). “Asher, my son. Let go of your past. It’s the only way you can take control of your future. Rise above your pain. Don’t grow old, alone and unloved like me. Find someone to share your life with. You’ve been the greatest source of comfort and joy to me. I wish you love and peace in your heart.” With a horrible and horrific past that still haunts him, Ash has buried all emotions and hides behind his blank face and coldness. Starting helping out at a clinic for abused young men and women, forces his past to come forth and it doesn't help that he's attracted to Drew, owner of said clinic, who is also straight. Drew makes him feel like no other has ever made him do and Drew has his own past that he's struggling with. Can both of them battle their demons and see a future? “I want you so fucking much. I’m ready to explode. I don’t know why, and I don’t care. I’ve wanted you for what seems like forever, and tonight I’m not letting you go until I make you mine. And, baby, you will be mine, make no mistake about it.” Overall, the story, as I said, had real potential. However, I struggled with liking the main character, Drew for most of the book. He I had expected a whole lot from, but actually got the opposite. ‘With a fierceness he didn’t know she possessed, Nana grabbed his arm. “I’m worried after our talk he might do something bad to himself. You think I’m too old that I don’t understand the ways of the world. I know he’s a homosexual, gay. Why should that matter to me? But something’s not right with him. He’s a very depressed man. Promise me after dinner you’ll go check on him. For me?” <---- SELFISH! Where's that guy everyone is saying is so selfless and kind? Here Nana is worrying her heart out of Ash, because she sees what others don't; he's got so many horrible demons to battle ALONE, and Drew thinks of it as BABYSITTING?! He's a owner of a clinic for abused young men and women, yet he doesn't want to help Ash? Selfless my ass. “I want it all.” He shocked himself, hardly recognizing his own strangled voice, distorted by desire, need and fear. I also hated Jordan, Drew's gay best friend. I want to smack him so hard that he'll see the mark for days. A more judgmental man you would have to look long for. He's so mean to Ash, just because he made a pass at him YEARS ago. HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HIM!! Arrrgh, I get so damn mad! Nana was awesome though! She's the kindest, fiercest person you can meet! She's so adorable and is Ash's biggest supporter. I loved her. She didn't judge, like other character did. Ash though, made the book worth reading. I adored him. My heart broke for him and I just wanted to protect him. Him and Nana made this book good enough to enjoy it. I was also disappointed at the build up after Ash and Drew got together. The book was good until that point, and after that it was kinda boring, still cute though, but boring. I also want another book with Ash. He wanted Ash. He cared. Lying here with this man, listening to him open his heart, made him realize how much he cared for and wanted Asher Davis. He swept the hair off Ash’s brow and kissed him. “I think you might be worth everything to me.” Quick basic facts: Genre: - (A) Contemporary Romance (M/M) Series: - Series (Standalone?), Book One Love triangle? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] Cheating? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] HEA? - (view spoiler)[Yes. I couldn't get into the story, I couldn't connect with the characters; I couldn't feel for them. I didn't like the writing and the sex scenes were nothing to write home about; as in they sucked. Really, they did. I felt nothing, I just wanted to skim them, however, they never long, so there was no point in skimming... Jack Francisco (36), a surgeon, were cute, I guess. Calm and didn't freaked out considering people were out to kill him. But there was nothing special about him though. At least, not in my eyes. Neither character were special to me. I guess that says it all, doesn't it. “You were never nobody,” he murmured. “Not to me, D.” Anson “D” Dane (36), a hitman, was...cold, yet emotional? He was scarred by his past and has practically forced himself to 'remove' human emotions. At least, that's what he's supposed to do, yet all I could see was a man with lots of emotions. I didn't see him as a badass hitman at all. Nothing made sense, and I hate myself for giving up, but I just couldn't force myself to continue with something I couldn't enjoy and made me bored out of my mind. Others seem to like this book though, but I'm used to being alone in not liking books... Overall, I didn't like it. It just wasn't for me all. “Saw you out there in the garden. Well, wasn't this a short, sweet, easy and fast forward book? Dirty Doctor was kinda good, but I expected as much from Whitney G., as I like most of her books. Though this one wasn't the best, as I felt something was missing, or I just wanted a bit more from it. Doctor Garrett Ashton aka D-DOCTOR (how old?) and resident doctor Natalie Madison aka JerseyGirl7 (how old?) were still awesome and I liked the story. “Um ... You just want us to meet?” Garret was hot, commanding, sexy, a bit of a asshole but deep down a romantic, alpha male. While Natalie was cute, sharp and stubborn, though I felt like I didn't get to know her all that much. Perhaps that was what that was missing... Overall, it was a nice, hot and not overall deep (though he did get balls deep...get it? Damn, I'm lame.), but light book.
