Which i Second re-read: 02.03.2020 I think that one of the reasons this series does not work for me is: 1) Dane, not Sam, is my favorite character. Which is odd since Sam's my favorite in Mary Calmes 's Marshals series. Sam just doesn't do it for me in this one. One should love a main character more than a side character.... at least for me, to get invested in a series. 2) Jory annoys me. I mean, he never takes anything seriously, nor does he have any depth. 3) Everyone is always and constantly touching Jory. Why? 4) The back and forth. Jory running instead of fighting and Sam being a coward. 5) The sex scenes are not hot to read. I sometimes struggle with knowing when they have sex. That being said, the concept in itself is alright, but the main characters just doesn't work for me as main characters should. Overall, the again re-read of this series will stop here as I don't like what Dane does in book three. New rating: 2.5/2 stars. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*I'm depressed*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Re-read: 16.04.2018 DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS!!! In second bok of the A Matter of Time series, Sam struggles with being so needy of Jory. Specially when he thought his future will involve a woman and kids. Dane ‘fires’ Jory so he can start a career instead of just doing a job. But to make sure Jory will always be in his life, Dane makes Jory become his brother; Jory Keyes becomes Jory Harcourt. He start to work at Barrington as graphic designer with a partner to develop branding for new clients. Overall, Jory is still not taking anything serious. Not even life and death situations. He also continuing to be stupid and people are still annoyingly telling him how gorgeous he is (we get it!) and touching him all the time (we get that he's a loving person). Needless to say, I don't get why I'm re-reading this series; I just can't find anything else to read. [image] Other characters: The list is a bit long so I've put it in a spoilers tag. (view spoiler)[↦ Dane Harcourt, the best character in the series. Is Jory's boss (has been his assistant for 5 years) and the main architect for one of the premier architectural firms in the city, Harcourt, Brown, and Cogan. ↦ Caleb Reid, Dane's biological brother. Suzie Pomeroy and Danny Reid, Caleb's parents, and Dane's biological mother and father - Suzie put Dane up for adoption without Danny's knowledged. ↦ Michael ‘Mike’ Kage, a architect and Sam's brother. Alexandra ‘Alex’ Ralston, his girlfriend of three months, who Jory knew beforehand through Dane (she slept with him? Or worked for him?) - book one. ↦ Regina Rappaport, Sam's mother and Thomas Kage, his father. ↦ Jennifer ‘Jen’ Levine, Sam's sister, married to Mitch Levine, got two daughters, Ally Levine (2) and Carla Levine together. And is (view spoiler)[lover to Kurt Pratt. He has a wife (Rita Pratt) and kids of his own. David O'Shea, the one who interviewed Jory, and his boss Philip Torres at Barrington. Chris Greer, Dy's husband. ↦ Truman Ward, a business man and client of Dane. He invited Jory for Thanksgiving after he entertained Truman while waiting for this meeting with Dane. Mrs. Bette Ward, Truman's wife of forty years. Cretia Ward, Truman's daughter. Trip, Truman's son and the plastic surgeon (still a resident). Colton, the oldest son of Truman, was in business with him as a tax attorney/corporate lawyer, and his fiancee, Channing Sinclair, pediatrician.. ↦ Anna, Jory's friend and her abusive (hitting her) husband, Brian Minor, the one who Jury saw murder someone. George, Anna's beagle. ↦ Miles Brown, who does interior design and Sherman Cogan, the landscape architect, Dane's business partners. ↦ Piper Dowling, Harcourt, Brown, and Cogan's front desk receptionist ↦ Celia Johnson and Jill Kincaid, assistants like Jory - Celia worked for Brown and Jill worked for the third partner at the firm, Cogan. ↦ Evan Rheems, Jory's friend and flight attendant. ↦ Kevin Wu, a guy Jory dated for six months? ↦ Ben, Wade and Eddie, friends of Jory. ↦ The Gordons, old friends of Sam's folks. Roman's father is actually Brian's boss, and Brian was never supposed to kill anybody and put Roman at risk, and now Jory's the only one that can tie him (Roman) to that crime scene, as everybody else who was in the house that night, including Brian, is now dead. (hide spoiler)] [image] [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Contains spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: The thing that keep getting to me, annoying me, is the constant mentioning of how gorgeous and pretty Jory is. He's a looker, we get it, you don't have to mention it regularly. Same with Dane. And Sam. They are amazing, now move on. Now, I almost felt like this book wasn't about Jory ‘J’ Keyes (view spoiler)[becomes Harcourt (hide spoiler)] (22, becomes 23) and Samuel ‘Sam’ ‘Sammy’ Thomas Kage (34). It was like reading a chapter of Jory's life, his life of meeting people, instantly connecting with folks and getting a brother. Also, the blurb of the book really spoils the book as the kidnapping doesn't happen until the very end. And who the kidnapper were was really predictable, and Jory was kinda stupid there. “You put me through it when you left, and I've been so...pissed... at you and then that night I saw you out and you look like you're okay you're fine without me, and—and I just wanted to take you home and... then the other night. I think I'm gonna mark you—put my name on you so everybody knows that you're—” Though there's love, it doesn't feel like it's a love story, more like a episode of happiness then comes emptiness. Jory keeps forgiving Sam: Sam messes up, Jory leaves. Sam dates a woman, then asks Jory to take him back, Jory takes him back and something happens again and Sam leaves. You get a glimpse of happiness followed by sadness. Or something. Overall, the story was alright, but not good and I'm not sure I even like Sam in this series. I loved him in the Marshals series, but in this one, I feel like we don't really get to know him. I really dig Dane Harcourt though. Might actually like him better than everyone else.... “Everybody wants to touch you all the time. I'm the only one who can't when I want to be the only one that can.” Quick basic facts: G ...more |

I'm glad it didn't as I remember book six is my favorite. That said, this time reading it I realized something: the first times I read it I hated that it seemed like Zane or Julian was stronger and better than Ty, but as you read, you see Julian - and Zane - surprised by how good and dangerous Ty is. I love that. The world of Cut & Run should be glad that Ty is one of the good guys... Overall, I love Ty, I loved how closer Ty and Zane have gotten and have I mentioned how much - yes you guessed it - I love Ty? New rating: 3 stars. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*MY BABY TY*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Re-read: 11.06.2017 Why I started re-reading this one as well is a good question... I think I just wanted more Ty. Because Ty is amazing and I love him so, so much. I still don't like how Julian appeared to be 'better' than Ty, but Ty clearly wins that one; he's simply the best. I also don't get how (view spoiler)[Burs can turn out to be the bad guy late in the book series. I mean, we read his POVs, and he doesn't seem like the bad guy. I have a feeling that I'll re-read this one again...along with all the others I keep re-reading. [image] First read review: The book was alright, I guess. A bit boring, even with the twists and turns it had. I loved, though, seeing Ty Grady and Zane Garrett more free and more open with each other. It was kinda interesting to see Ty and Zane through someone else's eyes, though I wasn't really interested in Cameron and Julian's relationship, but I liked see how they saw Ty and Zane. Also, I didn't like how the book made me think that Julian was...stronger, more dangerous and more powerful than Ty. In my head, Ty's the most dangerous, the strongest and the most powerful, and I don't like people messing with that. “You’re not going to kill them, are you?” Cameron asked, shifting uneasily in the seat. “I mean, they’re just doing their jobs.” [image] Quick basic facts: Genre: - (Adult) Contemporary Romance (M/M) Series: - Series, Book Five Love triangle? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] Cheating? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] HEA? - (view spoiler)[Open ending?. Yes I'm talking about the (view spoiler)[amnesia Will got (hide spoiler)]. Overall, despite me loving the twist, I still didn't like the book enough to give it more than 2.5 stars. You see, I can't (though I did in the twist) feel the connection between the characters. I mean, all they do is fight. It's awkward and I feel like they never fully let themselves love each other, like something is holding them back. And I can't stand that. Life, love, was made up of fragile moments like these. Fragile as Paris moonlight. I'm hating a bit on Will because of his continuing friendship relationship he has with David Bradley. Hell, I don't even think Taylor knows that Will and David had a goodbye kiss in one of the previous books. It's one of the few things that Taylor is insecure about and Will ain't helping at all. I also don't like how they, Will and Taylor, switch to ‘falling automatically back into the safety of their working partnership’ when they are supposed to be a couple. There that, is one of the reasons me and this series doesn't get along. The missing depth (of feelings) from the couple. Laroche was wrong about that, wrong about men not understanding love. I really don't feel like the are a couple: no one knows about them (except David, and apparently Tara and James, Taylor's sister and her husband; when did that happen? Do they all suddenly know after all?), not even their family, at least to my knowledge (hell, I don't even think Taylor has met Will's family), they don't seem all that close, and they are now in a long-distance relationship. Fuck, for me, they seem like just fuck buddies who love each other, to be honest. The series bores me and though I love Mary Calmes' writing, I don't like her writing styles for this series: the suddenly two weeks laters, the doing of this and not getting it really written, the characters not being all that affected by life.... It's like... a tv show. Each book is a episode and we are just looking from the outside, seeing the couple. Jory Harcourt (26) and Samuel “Sam” Thomas Kage (38) are cute together, but I still don't feel all that much towards them. Re-read: 11.01.2021

Re-read: 11.01.2021 A part of me kinda hates the author for writing Raphael. I'm too in love and NO ONE can live up to him. It's simply impossible. So the truth is I'm gonna be alone for the rest of my life :P I still want to know if there's a list over who is the most powerful in this series.... [image] First read review: ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Raphael. Enough said.*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ I'm way too tired to write a review, so I'm gonna do a quick one: I love Vampire Lord Raphael (500 +-?). He is amazing. He's perfect. He's hot and powerful and delicious and yummy and fucking sexy. And no one messes with my man. He'll kill you and he'll enjoy it. And I will cheer on him. I fucking wish he was real and mine; when I now go to sleep I will dream and he'll be mine. I'm weird, I know. I am willing to share him with only one person; Cynthia ‘Cyn’ Leighton (how old is she again?), Raphael's mate. She's awesome. Badass. Great (okay, fine, perfect) match for my baby. And, just as she’d known his earlier thoughts, she understood what he was saying now. He needed her by his side. Even in war. Overall, I fucking love reading about Raphael, even though the stories sometimes doesn't live up to my full expectations. But the more Raphael, the better. I hope we get more books of him; D.B. Reynolds please never stop writing and publishing books about Raphael. The world (ehem... me) needs him. And I beg of you; please never let anyone be more powerful than Raphael. That'll destroy my image of him. Shit, this review got longer than I expected... Sorry. Oh and I'm still not interested in the read of the characters when they are not side characters in Raphael's books. Sorry about that as well. Unfortunately - or not, depends on how you look at it - , I felt nothing more and nothing less for the book. It was all the same. There are some major things that annoying me when it comes to this series and that is the supposed connection between the characters. Another is how much they are holding back. [image] Then there's the big fucking thing that bothers me in this book; Will hasn't told his family about Taylor. Hell, they don't even know he's gay. This is a huuuuge setback and I hate Will for it. How can he say he love Taylor but doesn't tell anyone about him? I'd feel worthless if I were Taylor. Will lost my respect. I hope next book - which isn't out yet - is the last one and wraps up the couple. [image] Other characters: ↦ Riley, Will's five-year-old German shepherd. ↦ Lieutenant Commander David Bradley, was Will's temporary partner in book #2 and his ex-boyfriend. ↦ Assistant Field Officer Director Greg Cooper, Taylor and Will's boss. ↦ Richard Lamprell, owner of Geo-Gulf Oil and Taylor’s stepdad. Taylor’s parents had divorced when he was in junior high, and his mother had remarried a multimillionaire. ↦ Bill Brandt, Will's father. Seems like a chill, smart man. ↦ Grant Brandt (25), his brother Grant and is not okay with his big brother being gay. [image] [image] First read review: ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*A annoyed reviewer*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ We're back with Special Agents Taylor ‘Tay’ MacAllister (33) and William ‘Will’ Brandt (31). We finally got to know Will's age; I had thought he'd be older than Taylor... Took a damn long time, 5 freaking books in fact, before we got to know this fact. Taylor and Will have now been a couple for 2 years and it's time for Will's family to know about him and Taylor. Yes, Will's family don't know he's gay, nor do they know about Taylor. I wonder how that must make Taylor feel. I would have felt like I didn't really matter all that much. I mean, it's been 2 fucking years. And why do they call each other ‘boyfriends’ while Taylor is wearing Will's ring... Aren't they engaged? “Not worried about the decor, Brandt. Seriously. Just find us some place where no one you knew from the good old days is going to walk in on us.” On top of that, Will and Taylor are going poor, as in their business of being ‘security consulting’ are about to go down. Unless Taylor asks his stepdad for money. Which he really don't wanna do. And not only that, but someone is out to get the Brandts: to settle a score, and that's not all: one of the Brandts don't even like Taylor because he's a ‘queer’. Sounds like a stressful visit, if you ask me. Overall, the book was boring. I was hoping for more depth, but what can I really expect when I haven't gotten it so far in the series? I still feel like Will and Taylor are just fuck buddies who love each other, but not necessary in love. Their relationship feel so...awkward and not there. Luckily, I only have one book left in the series, I think... “The main thing, the important thing to both of us, is what we already have. We’re together. And as long as we’re together, we’re okay. I was going through my ‘M/M read’ shelf in the hopes that I'd find anything interesting to re-read and I came across this one; I didn't remember what it fully was about. Though the more I read, the more I remembered. The thing is, the book is not bad; it centers around two men falling in love in a world where you'd be killed (horribly) for being a sodomite. There's a war, deaths, religion and royalty. However, it feels really long simply because of the way it's written. It's almost like you're with the character; connected and all, and like you're on the outside at the same time, which can make things stressful and feel like it's taking forever to finish. It's still a interesting story that I'd recommend if you like some M/M in a historical world. New Rating: 3 stars Quotes From The Book (Contains Spoilers): (view spoiler)[ “More medals?” “I am a king now, Niko. Everything I say is obeyed; everything I want is given to me. I have so much power that I think I will swell up and burst sometimes. You are the only one who reminds me of what I really am, the only one who will tell me when I am wrong. You are my king, Niko, and I need you. Please do this for me.” I, Christian, appoint you, Nikolai, Chief Minister of Hesse-Davia and Saxefalia, with all accordant rights. Do you solemnly swear to govern the Peoples according to their laws and customs?” He looked completely magnificent, every inch a king, in beautiful clothes that I wished to rip off him very roughly. So I knelt once more to him. If he found this amusing, no one would have known from his expression. He looked very serious as he pulled out his sword.(hide spoiler)] Other Characters: → Faelan, a Tamask dog from a land far to the north of here. Looks like a wolf? Is a wolf? → Lord Salisbury, a patient of Niko. Madame Costain (wife to one of Hesse-Davia’s ministers) and Lady Caroline, the Lord's sisters. → King Gregor Alexander Philip Mountberg of Hesse-Davia and Aleksey's father. His queen died giving birth to Aleksey, their youngest son. The heir, His Royal Highness Prince George Charles Willheim (33), Aleksey's brother. The brothers have a rocky relationship because George blamed, not unnaturally perhaps, for his mother’s death. The king blamed everyone but himself for her demise, and so the family, according to Niko's hostess (Madame Costain), limped along with no love lost between any of them. (view spoiler)[Both king Gregor and prince George dies close to the end of the book, making Aleksey the king. (hide spoiler)] → Doctor Jules Lyons, French, a doctor who was summoned to try and save the king. → Stephen Eric Peter Mountberg (9, turns 10), Niko's page (servant) at the castle. He's the bastard child of Prince Peter. He was the king's oldest brother, but he’s dead now. The king had two living brothers: Harold, who was never to be called Hal, and John, who was a fool, according to Stephen. (view spoiler)[When Aleksey becomes king after the death of the heir and king, he pronounced Stephen as the legitimate and rightful heir to the throne of Hesse-Davia and Saxefalia and bestowed upon him all rights appertaining to him; is now a Prince. (hide spoiler)] → Princess Anastasia (19?), Aleksey fiancée. → Gregory, a friend of Aleksey. Sebastian (4?), Gregory's son. Pia, Gregory's wife. Gregory was the cook. He was also the proprietor of the inn and headman of the small village. (view spoiler)[Gregory gets appointed as minister for works when Aleksey becomes king. (hide spoiler)] → Colonel Johan, a colonel in Aleksey’s army and a close ‘friend’ of Aleksey. → Xavier, Niko's warhorse. → Mark, a boy who hanged out with Aleksey when Aleksey first saw Niko. When we emerged from the tub, I asked Aleksey where I was to sleep, and he took my hand and led me to a large bedchamber with one huge bed hung with curtains. He looked at me and pouted a little. “I had thought that we would be more intimate by this stage—that you would be content to share a bed with me. I’m sorry. Perhaps you would—” I caught him around the waist, heaved him into the air, and, ignoring his furious objection to being so manhandled, dumped him on the bed, then straddled him. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*A dangerous royal affair* ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Doctor Nikolai ‘Niko’ Hartmann (35, becomes 36 at the end of the book) and youngest son (General His Royal Highness the) Prince Christian Aleksey (23, becomes 24 at the end of the book) met after what Nikolai believes was a bandit. He didn't not expect to met the man again. Specially not while doctoring the King and the man is the prince. An arrogant but beautiful prince. A prince that is just as fascinated with the doctor as the doctor is in the prince. But just because Aleksey is a prince doesn't that mean that Nikolai treats him as one. Soon they find themselves riding for war, sharing a tent... Two men loving each other is a sin, are the two men ready to say 'screw the rules' and just love? I determined there and then not to underestimate this prince of mine again. He was not vacuous and flighty, as he liked to give the impression he was. And why was I calling him my prince? He was strong wine: something I thought about consuming but knew would be bad for me. What a... strange, but quite interesting book this was. I must say I was pleasantly surprised at this. Though this wasn't the best book I've read - historical or M/M - it was still one of the better books I've read so far this year. Which is saying something. But as always, something was yet again missing. I believe that it might be because of the writing. Although some parts were written good, there was still some ‘annoyingness’ there. Perhaps it was the constant feeling of things being shortened or cut, like it could've been a bit deeper? I dunno. Anyway the ending felt a bit rushed. I dunno, I liked it, the ending that is, but I wanted a little bit more from it. I felt like the climax wasn't as high as it should've been. Overall, the story was fascinating. Some scenes were horrific; the war and the descriptions of them, yet Nikolai and Aleksey's love was adorable. I had come a long way to forget, a long way for a new beginning. You cannot have one of those, I suppose, without an ending, and there had been no real ending. I had the horror inside still, carried all the way from that accursed country to this new one. Will I read this again in the future? - Probably not. Rating - 3.5/3 stars. Merged review: Re-read: 02.12.18 I don't know why I started re-reading this book. I love him and I miss him even though I just finished his series. Nine books just weren't enough. I love Zane too, I do, but nothing compares to my love for Ty. He owns me. That said, I'm still a bit disappointed that this was the end of the series. And lets not start on the ending of this book; it was so rushed. I also ended up skimming, especially Nick's POVs. I just wasn't interested in Nick. Just Ty. Ty and Zane. Mostly Ty. I love Ty. [image] First read review: Since I was so disappointed with the last two books in the series, I'm not shocked or overly surprised that I didn't like this one all that much. I felt like Nick and Liam stole the show from the main characters Ty and Zane. I wanted this series to go out with a bang, and I just felt...nothing. Sure, the book had its moments, but in the end, after nine books, I'm very glad I'm done with it since it felt like Nick was pushed down my throat. “And I had to be made blind before I could see.” I wouldn't mind reading another book, though, if it focuses only on Ty and Zane, and only them. Because, the more Ty, the better. Let just say that I needed something more from this book. It was a good goodbye to the couple and I was not ready to say goodbye to Ty. Not like that, at least. Owens makes interesting stories that holds your attention, with a nice plot line and awesome characters. Overall, it's short so it doesn't take long to read, it doesn't have insta-love, and it gives a build up for book two. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*It Wasn't Bad*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: The book centers around Gaven (17, almost 18), bastard son of the leader of Masarians. He didn't know this and only found out when he was taken back to the Masarian, however, Gaven refuses to believe it. On the journey to the capital for the people, he learns the he'll be Vlar's - the second in command of the Masarians - eraman, to be thought to love with another man and to become a warrior worthy of the Masarians. This is not what Gaven wants as he hates the man who killed the people he grew up with and he will not bow down easily. Overall, the book wasn't actually that bad. I like the concept; it reminded me of Kristen Ashley's The Golden Dynasty book. Which is a good thing. I'm glad we have another book for the two to read as the story would've sucked if it had ended with this one. I liked Gaven as a character and though we didn't really got to know Vlar on a more personal level, I'm looking forward to doing so. I'm glad that I decided to read this one after all, even though I had previously shelved it as a ‘check won't read’ book. I'm on the road to read tons of J.C. Owens' books. I really like the authors writing and stories! On to the next one. “Your name is Gaven. You are a bastard child, raised in sufferance by the grace of your lord within the fortress itself. Your mother was the laundress, who died but two years ago. You are almost eighteen, and proud of the fact that the lord actually granted you leave to train to be a guard. You have started late to the sword, but show some impressive natural skill which impressed your lord and made him take notice of you.” Quotes From Book: (view spoiler)[ “Your mother was a seeress, Gaven. A very well known seeress in our lands. Although she was not Masarian, she chose to reside in our lands because there is a great respect for those talents there, a freedom to learn and grow. It is not so strange then that we pick our closest companions, our lovers, from those around us. We have not time to court women or spend time being their husbands. Often marriages are made for the begetting of children and, once those children are born, the man and woman may well never see each other again. Ours is a very military society, and we are surrounded by other very warlike people; we are never at peace long enough to raise families. Yet we are but people, Gaven. We need love, we need caring in our lives, and it is totally accepted that men can love men with great intensity, even onto a lifetime. This is not strange to us, and indeed it is encouraged and expected. It is considered an honor, and a ceremony is held when the boy is taken as lover. It is the beginning of his new life, a symbolic giving of himself to his mentor in all things.” He paused then, gave a small smile that made me look at him more closely. He turned his head and met my eyes squarely. “I am your father’s lover, Gaven. Have been for many years. We are bonded, which means a true commitment as great as any marriage.” “He is Finnarian.” My blank look brought a small chuckle from him. “Finnarians live far to the north. Forth re-read: 28.02.2021
God I wish insta-love was my thing but I just fucking hate it. This book could've been such a good book had it not ha Forth re-read: 28.02.2021 God I wish insta-love was my thing but I just fucking hate it. This book could've been such a good book had it not had insta-love. If there had been more build-up in the relationship, this book could've been so fucking great. Insta-love is the fucking worst for me. Also, have you noticed that the author's main male character's POV is usually quite similar. Jin, Miro and Jory is almost the same character, just a change of name.... Maybe that is what is bothering me as well... ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Insta-love Is Its Downfall*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Third re-read: 24.11.2018 I hate myself for not loving insta-love. I love the concept of the book, I love the animalistic side of the characters, and I love Jin and Logan as characters and as a couple, BUT that damn insta-love destroys it all for me. I absolutely detest insta-love and this book is so insta that it isn't fair nor should be allowed. The whole book centers around a semel finding his reah but the timeline for that is “So you’re saying no semel can afford to wait for his reah.” Other Characters: → Crane Adams (26?), Jin's best friend; has known him since childhood and left with him when Jin was left for dead by their old pack. Crane is the beset (companion of a reah) to Jin. → Delphine, Logan's sister. → Andrian Basargin, a khatyu, a fighter of Logan's pack (the Mafdet tribe). → Simone Danvers, the sister of Pakhet tribe semel, Christophe Danvers. Simone was supposed to mate Logan to covenant bond between the two tribes. Talon Danvers, Christophe yareah (wife). (view spoiler)[Jin names Simone as his aset; the appointed mate of a semel in the event of the death of their reah. An aset can only be chosen, made, by a reah. (hide spoiler)] → Raymond ‘Ray’ Torres, Jin and Crane's boss; they work at Fusion; a nightclub on the strip. Jin bartends in the club, and Crane bartend upstairs in the Bossa Nova lounge. Ray wants Jin to take over the night manager spot at his restaurant in King’s Beach so he could run the club (with Crane working there as well), though the restaurant is in Logan's territory and Jin and Crane would need permission to cross their territory, which he gets (from Andrian) as he saves Logan's sister. → Yuri Kosa, the sheseru of the tribe of Mafdet (enforcer of the tribe, guardian of the mate of the semel; Jin was a reah, his place was to stand as his champion. Instinctively, he wanted to be my shield, as he was supposed to be the mate of a semel). → Mikhail Gorgerin, the sylvan of the tribe of Mafdet (the crook, the shepherd, teacher of the tribe, counselor to the semel). → Domin Thorne, semel of the tribe of Menhit. (view spoiler)[After Logan wins the challange against Domin, he declared: “The tribe of Menhit is gone. Your tribe will forever run with mine; you are now maahes, prince of the tribe of Mafdet, and you will be my emissary to others, my voice, my persuader, and my counselor for peace. Blood has been spilled; let there now be kinship between us.” (hide spoiler)] → Ruslan ‘Russ’ Church, Logan's brother. → Korneiley ‘Koren’ Church, Logan's brother. → Eva and Peter Church, Logan's parents. → Avery Cadim, Christophe Danvers’s sheseru. → Markel, Domin's sheseru. → Mitchell Rayne, Jin's father and the sylvan of Jin's old tribe, the Anuket tribe. Their new semel, Archer Pike, brother of the previous semel, Gabriel. Danny, Jin's cousin. My smile had the desired effect; the man stepped back, shaken. He wasn’t like me; he wasn’t a reah. He didn’t have my power. He could be man or beast; he could not be pieces of either by choice. He could not take the form of a werepanther; it was the ability of only a semel or a reah. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*I like the beginning*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ Second re-read: 08.12.2017 Don't ask. I don't know. I seriously HATE the insta-love that is soooo damn INSTA (like 2 days), BUT I adore the animalistic side of things. And man, I really do love the first... 12% (?) or 20% of the book. But why I decided to re-read yet again? I have no clue. I guess I'm just tired of trying to find any new interesting books to read, but all I end up is disappointed... [image] Re-read: 23.05.2017 Why the hell did I re-read this? I'll tell you why: I'm sick and tired looking for books only to get disappointed, so why not read books I know I won't get disappointed in? It's not that this book is great, because it isn't. But it's good, and have a strong potential to be great. My main problem is, of course, the insta-love. I hate insta-love. But as far as the story goes, it's actually kinda good. The plot about finding acceptance, love and safety, to find a home, somewhere to belong. It's good. And I also like Jin and Logan's connection. I do, but I still hate how fast the connection became. [image] First read review: Damn, it could've been so damn good... Thank god for SheReadsALot's review, or else I would have been so damn lost. This book really had potential! Fuck, I really loved the beginning, but then, of course, there had to be insta-love. And if you know me, then you know I hate insta-love. I felt like Logan Church (32) and Jinnai ‘Jin’ Rayne (24) didn't actually know each other, specially not personally. So you can understand that I'm kinda pissed that so much potential got wasted. So there's three things I definitely didn't like: Overall, it's was good, then it was alright and then I got bored. I wanted more from the book, more from the characters and when I didn't get it, I was kinda disappointed. I did like Logan's possessiveness though. Merged review: Forth re-read: 28.02.2021 God I wish insta-love was my thing but I just fucking hate it. Don't know if I'll continue the series... “It was surprising to hear it from his lips, my plain, ordinary name spoken as it never had been before, with awe, lite it was sacred, like treasure. There's something special there, a father-son bond that should've been exploited more. The book was still an alright read, though, again, not the best on in the series. Probably a second or third to Isaac's own book. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Might contain spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ This book circles around assistant coach Max Ashford (29) and head coach Mikhail ‘Misha’ Samarin (40), who has a past with one another. A past that ended their career as hockey players. Now they are both coaching the ‘worst’ team in the entire league. Working together might seem hard, but they hadn't expected a fierce attraction towards each other... And for Misha to face his past, which he has tried to forget. But with Max's optimism and light humor, Misha might actually have a chance at a happy ending. Misha didn’t think he deserved to have his pain ended so easily. Overall, the book was easy to read, fast forward and simple. Like the rest of the series (I've only read #4 and #5 before this one... yeah, yeah, I know I'm going backwards). I had expected a more for this book, but I wasn't overly surprised either. Which is probably why I read book #4 first in this series before reading this one because we met these main characters here in that one. I had also hope for more connection between Misha and Isaac Drake. I have this want - and need - for Misha to adopt him... There’s a setting between “hate” and “sucking his cock,” Max. Find it and dial it there. Quick. Quick basic facts: Genre: - (A?) Re-read: 11.09.2019

That being said, I'm glad we get to see Gaven and Vlar getting closer, but I'm sadden that it feel like it jumps from confusion to loving one another. What about the in between? [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*It Was Alright*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: We're back with Gaven (18?), bastard son of the warlord and nephew to the king of Masarians and his eraman Vlar, the second in command of the Masarians. In this book we get to know Vlar in a more personal level, though not much as his kind is quite... secretive. Gaven is being trained in both bed and fighting skills, and trying to balance that with trying to belong and not feel for Vlar, he's struggling. Overall, the book had too much sex and too little bonding. It didn't live up the first book and this one is the least liked of me of author so far. Quotes From Book: (view spoiler)[ “What do you know of his father, Weasel?” I questioned with a tinge of exasperation. “Anyway,” he said with a pointed look, “Draconians, from what I have read and heard, are a beautiful sight. Thus I called my father.” His thumbs caressed my cheeks. “As to what you are to me, Gaven, you’re my little bloodmate , my other half. I love seeing Aleksey and Niko grow closer in mind, but am I the only one who thinks they still have some way to go? I wish the author would've written another book for the series, where, perhaps, the men will return to Hesse-Davia and start changing how the world - or at least the kingdom - sees a gay relationship. I feel like Aleksey reclaiming his throne, he'd do a whole lot of good... Other Characters: → Mary (looks about 15), was a widow from England before marrying the Reverend Wright very soon after her arrival—the other three young men are his sons: Jacob, Samuel, and Martin. The reverend—he is to be the new pastor, apparently, in the outpost. She is hardly more than a child and her now husband is 'gray of beard', and she's mother of that odd child, David (5). → Major Frederick Parkinson, nice and fat? That's all Aleksey would say about him. → Captain Jonathan ‘John’ Rochester and Lieutenant Owen McIntyre. John is the older one, as he came up through the ranks. Captain Roderick Fallkirk, the one who is staying at Aleksey's Kingdom with the horses. He has a limp. → Onekwenhtara ‘Etienne’ Okwaho, friend of Niko? Lives with his tribe (Mik’mac?). → Boudica, Aleksey's warhorse. Freedom, Boudica and Xavier (Niko's warhorse) foal. → Faelan, a Tamask dog from a land far to the north of here. Looks like a wolf? Of course, that's not to last; Aleksey has heard whispers about people disappearing into thin air and the place abandoned, he has decided to accompany a group of people to solve this mystery. Nikolai has no choice but to tag along. The mystery, however, proves to be just a trap. Can Nikolai and Aleksey get through this and come out stronger? “Why is the world like this, Niko? We came here and said this was my kingdom and that my law applied here, but nothing has changed. We still have to pretend that we are not what we are to each other. I adore their love and loyalty towards each other. However, I wish we had gotten more in the end. Second re-read: 28.06.2021
I want a sequel for this book. Really. This one is not enough. I want more. New Rating: 3.5 stars. [image] Re-read: 05.0 Second re-read: 28.06.2021 I want a sequel for this book. Really. This one is not enough. I want more. New Rating: 3.5 stars. [image] Re-read: 05.09.2019 I seriously don't regret re-reading this one. I really like J.C. Owens writing style, his character and his stories. I actually wish we had gotten a sequel for this one with the same characters as the main ones. That is when you know you've found a good author to follow. I'm thinking I'm about to re-read more of this author's books...... I wish Goodreads had half stars! [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*I'm Really Liking This Author*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ The book centers around Prince of Ceratas, Aidan Telan Ameris (21?) and the leader of the rebel forces, General Torin Amaldis Greyan (how old?). Aiden is said to be the imposter prince and is to be used as a political gain for the invaders to claim the throne. Torin is the only one left of the royal line, and he and his army refuses to let the invaders win. When Torin meets Aiden he thinks him as the enemy, but that changes as they end up needing each other. Overall, it actually wasn't so bad. Aidan did not care about watchers, or judgment, he threw his arms around Torin and nestled against his chest, tears rising. After having such a success reading J.C. Owens's Dark Rain , I needed to give this a shot as well. Though I had originally shelved this one as a ‘checked won't read’ book as I don't like submissive characters, I didn't actually find Aiden all that submissive. I mean, he had some backbone, but he's been abused all his life so it's hard to stand up for himself when all he expects are a blow to his head. I liked his innocence, his bravery and intelligence. He might not believe in himself, but he's a good man with a great and kind heart who only wants to belong. “If they come here,” Torin snarled, “they know they will have a battle, and they will damn well lose. They do not dare to meet me on my own ground, the cowards.” He raked fingers through his long black hair, tousling it into an artful mess. Torin is a great leader who only gives and never takes. I love them together as each complimented the other. I actually wished we had gotten a sequel for Torin and Aiden. Would've been really interesting to see how their lives are now. I don't regret changing my mind about reading this one at all. I read it in one go, never once stopping. I'm finding that I'm really liking J.C. Owens stories, characters and writing. I'm definitely gonna continue reading more from this author! Torin considered things, trying to push away the surging emotions that made thinking difficult. Quotes From Book: (view spoiler)[ “I am bloody well aware of what I did wrong, but they had no orders to abuse him.” He drew in a shaky breath and his pacing stopped, hands clenching into fists as he faced his friend. Torin, as leader of the rebellion, was a natural target, and now he held the key for the invaders. The young man, Aidan, had been raised as a lie, supposedly a survivor of that royal massacre. They said he was the youngest prince, Aidan, who had been a mere six years old at the time. Those loyal to the crown, desperate, might even have fallen for the ruse if Torin had not fought against it. “Well, you are in Ceratas now, and this is General Torin Amaldis Greyan, leader of our rebellion against the invaders. He is all that is left of the royal line.”(hide spoiler)] Other Characters: → General Heratis and General Nairat, the invaders. (view spoiler)[They are brothers. Torin snapped Nairat's neck at 41%. He had tried (did?) to rape Aiden; got a finger and his cock in before Torin stopped him? Aiden kills Heratis later in the book. (hide spoiler)] → Jara, the eldest guardian of Aiden. Died at the attacked en route to Ceratas. Was working with Heratis and Nairat (not a spoiler as it happens really early). Cemas, Garath and Larmana, Aiden's other guardians. → Lord Paulsten, Torin’s best friend and companion. → Ryvas, the old man who governs the library with an iron hand. → Nyton, a farmer who supported Torin. His oldest son joined Torin's army. → Manley, captain of the watch (Torin's team). → Lord Cermun, friend of Torin. → Amadan, was the crown prince of Ceratas and Torin's lover. The royal family was brutally murdered almost fifteen years ago. (view spoiler)[Amadan had been held captured all those years and becomes King at the end of the book. He also claims Aiden as his long lost brother. (hide spoiler)] It had been almost fifteen years since the invasion. To loosen the stranglehold the invaders had upon Ceratas was going to take increasingly bold maneuvers. Re-read: 30.06.2021

I'm not sure I'd ever love an elf from this world but he did have "some" redeemable moments so maybe? That said, I actually want more of Niko and Vasili's journey. I feel like this wasn't enough. I understand that there's a 3.5 book as well, - which I'm gonna read next - but I feel like that won't be enough. I think that Vasili is such a complex character that his story can go on forever. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Might Contains Spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: While this book was the least good in this series, it was still interesting. I do not regret changing my mind to read this series at all. Nikolas ‘Niko’ ‘Nik’ Yazdan (24/25?) and Prince Regent Vasili Caville (23/24?) were good character and kept things interesting. For some reason, I wanted something more out of this one, yet I don't know what that was/is. While Niko remained strong through out the series - even got stronger - I felt like Vasili lost a bit of his appeal. He was so.... badass in the first book. He still was in book two and three, probably the strongest character in this series, but somehow, in my eyes, he lost a bit of his edges. While I had grown tired of his games and lies in book one and two, he had this mystery to him: he was more than just the flame. Yet as the story went on, I felt like he was just the flame and Vasili, if you know what I mean? I'm rambling; I'm sick so I'm probably not making any sense. That said, I kinda wanted to know more about the elves. Is the rest of Ariana Nash 's series kept this this level of darkness or do they go darker? Because this darkness in this series was pretty much my limit. Any more and I'm not interested... Quick basic facts: Genre: - (Adult) Dark Fantasy Romance (M/M). Series: - Series, Book Three. Love triangle? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] Cheating? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] HEA? - (view spoiler)[Yes. (hide spoiler)] Favorite character? - Nikolas ‘Niko’ ‘Nik’ Yazdan. Would I read more by this author/or in this series? - Yes, I believes so. Would I recommend this book/series? - Yes, if you like dark themes. Will I read this again in the future? - Who knows. Rating - 3 stars. ...more |

Don't get me wrong, the book is still interesting and has tons of twists along the way, but man it is frustrating! That said, it is dark to some degree and it is actually not my forte. I don't really like it dark but it was bearable enough since I already knew what would happen... New rating: 2.5/3 stars. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Contains Spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ First read review: With the book ending in such a cliffhanger, I'm so fucking glad I didn't start reading this series until all the book was out. That said, I grew tried of Nikolas ‘Niko’ ‘Nik’ Yazdan (24/25?) and Prince Regent Vasili Caville (23/24?) constant back and forth between hate and barely like. While I liked the sexual and none sexual frustration, I just wanted them to get over it and fuck like bunnies and confess their love. That said, I was a bit confused with the history within this series and the thing with the keys. I hope things get more cleared up in the last book. Overall, I liked it. I'm glad we got to see even more layers to the prince and captain Yasir Lajani of the ship Walla’s Heart was a nice character to add, though I mostly wanted scene with Vasili and Niko. Enjoyed the animalistic aspects to it. I just wish it was...more. The switch from Remy being the brat to (view spoiler)[Alpha (hide spoiler)] just didn't feel all that smooth to me and having Cy calling (view spoiler)[Remy his alpha (hide spoiler)] did not feel right at all. But still, it's an enjoyable, interesting read. Of course, it's a bit predictable but it's an easy read to make the time pass. [image] ⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Might Contain Spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱ The book centers around Remy (17, turns 18 in chapter four) and his ward Cyrus ‘Cy’ Hames (38?), the Alpha of the Beacon Island pack. Remy has now been with Cy's pack for nearly ten years after Cy saves Remy at the age of eight - it was too late for his mother and sister. In the ten years, Cy's become the head forest ranger of Beacon Island National Forest and Remy a brat. He rarely can be bothered to acknowledge his link to Cy and his pack. They’re a burden to him. An unwanted family. People he was forced to live with and obey. And as the thing that attacked him and his family had tried to rip Remy's throat out, he hasn't spoken a word since - a year of being in their custody, Cy commanded that they all learn American Sign Language since Remy's vocal cords were damaged in the attack (he's mute, not deaf). Remy craves to escape his prison, to go to school, but his warden refuses and Remy hates him. Doesn't he? Overall, it was an interesting read. I liked it. I love possessive and controlling alphas, you know that. And I liked how close the pack was to each other. However, there was a couple of things that I still didn't understand like for example why Cy refused to shift into a wolf except on a full moon. Is it a punishment, or simple because of control, or lack of it. Then there was the switch between hate and want that turned too fast for my taste. It was also pretty predictable. But other than that, I enjoyed reading quite a lot. It had an interesting plotline, with awesome characters with an animalistic feel to it - you know I love that. I just wanted more from it, more action, more sexual frustration, more werewolves. Cy's Betas: (once human, bitten, and turned against their will) → Judd, always the first to reach out, worries. Cy's right-hand man. His best friend. → Ray, her burst of warmth always chasing away Cy's chill. → Finnick, despite being the clown of our group, ripples in with the force of a hurricane. → Ewan, who vines them all together, tugging them tight until they’re whole. In the ten years since Remy joined them, he's become an environmental scientist for the State of Maine. Quick basic facts: Genre: - (Adult) Paranormal Romance (M/M). Series: - Series (Standalone), Book Five. Love triangle? - (view spoiler)[No. (hide spoiler)] Cheating? - (view spoiler)[No. Though Remy kisses Cash. This is before Remy and Cy starts to want each other sexually. (hide spoiler)] HEA? - (view spoiler)[Yes, for this couple (hide spoiler)] Favorite character? - Cyrus ‘Cy’ Hames. Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Yes. Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure. Will I read this again in the future? - Unsure. Rating - 3.5/3 stars. ...more |
