This was fine, but I think I was just never going to love any of the series the way I loved the first book!

I liked this a lot, which I'm very excited about, because Charles and I have never quite connected. But I do like dark academia! And like others have I liked this a lot, which I'm very excited about, because Charles and I have never quite connected. But I do like dark academia! And like others have said, there IS romance here, even if it's not a genre romance book.
On the dark academic note, I liked that (view spoiler)[with some notable exceptions (hide spoiler)] this is a group of mostly good people! I feel like a lot of dark academia is terrible people doing terrible things. Which, okay, "dark", but I liked that I could root for Jem!
I echo friends that I would've loved a little more! (view spoiler)[I'm actually particularly interested in Ella, who references character growth over the years! And Nicky, who we learn more about, but I'd love to have seen even more of his moving on from Toby and developing feelings for Jem. I know it was Jem's POV, but I couldn't get a gauge on what was going on until late in the book. (hide spoiler)]...more

In general, I'm not a fan of amnesia plots, but it worked fairly well for me here because it was soooo baked into the plot. It was a real quest to fix things (view spoiler)[and Toby found out pretty early on that something was wrong. And nobody who loves her was trying to trick her. That said, it left me less excited than these books generally and I think that's because (view spoiler)[at the end of the day, it doesn't feel like there was much actual plot progression???? And Hannah's anxiety and Blue's demisexuality really, really resonated with.
I could see myself bumping this up to five stars at some point because I think I'll return to this a lot. It's Eric POV, which is a lot of un. Which--this is unfair to say because this was a pre-order promotion and not yet available for purchase, but I DO think you should try to read this before Murder at Haven's Rock.
