I've watched movies like this, where characters are in a game world and pull up their stats and lives, but this is the first book I've read of this genre.
Aliens have come to earth and flattened all structures, killing anyone who was inside any building. Lucky for Carl, he was outside trying to get his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, back inside when it happened. Carl and Princess Donut find their way into openings in the ground where they learn they are now part of a huge dungeon crawl game being played by aliens with the 13 million surviving earthlings. The object is to survive each level (and there are LOTS of them) by fighting creatures and bosses to get to the next level before the timer runs out. You can earn rewards by doing well and gaining patrons in the game.
There is a lot of humor and funny banter between Carl and Princess Donut. Yes, something crazy happens to her. The author is wonderfully imaginative and it makes the story fun and interesting. There is constant battling and action.
My only big complaint is the ending. It just stops. It's very abrupt. I first thought something was wrong with the copy of my book. I really don't like those jolting endings. That's just me personally though. I'd recommend the book to sci-fi/fantasy fans who enjoy D&D games and like movies like Ready Player One. It will keep you entertained.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily....more
