There is a purpose. We learn about Delta wolves and their important role in the pack. Then we move into present day where our MCs come into play: Ben, an Alpha shifter, and Evan, a Delta shifter. Ben wants to change attitudes of not only the elders but of other packs so his pack and others like him can live peacefully. Evan and his friend and fellow Delta, Jack, are the ones who can help make that change. Things aren't easy for Ben, which makes for a lot of tension in the story and good action. But there's loads of romance. If you like smoking hot sex, and plenty of it, you've found your book. And we soon learn that Delta's have other special abilities.
The world building is well done and with the addition of Deltas, is a bit different from other shifter books making it somewhat unique. It has good dialogue and action scenes. I highly recommend this to fans of shifter books.

You really need to have read the books before it to get the full enjoyment though because there are references to previous characters. And to understand the world building for this universe, you get most of that in the earlier books. There is loads of angst here but it pays out in the end with a very happy ending.
Kerry goes to live with his pater at his boarding house to get through his unwanted pregnancy that was brutally forced on him by his imprisoned mate. Jannis, who we know well from previous books was a huge playboy has decided to become a doctor and change his playboy reputation. He wants to settle down now and become respected. He's grown a lot since we first met him. He and Kerry are drawn to each other, but because of the brutality that Kerry has survived with his mate, he is scared to get close to Jannis. And well, he's still mated and his in-laws are creating all kinds of problems for him. Kerry is very broken, but Jannis still has all his charm and they slowly form a friendship. As Kerry watches Jannis doctor the people in the community and spends more time with him, he sees what a wonderful and kind man he is. Although Kerry doesn't see a way for them to ever be happy, we get the twist we are hoping for and a really nice HEA. I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator does a great job. I'd recommend the audiobook, but at the very least, this is a good choice if you've read the previous books. ...more

But I was disappointed that I didn't like it as much as everyone else. I'm a fan of Leta Blake, so I feel like the odd man out with not giving it a five star rating. I do love to read shifter and m-preg stories and I especially love omegaverse. My biggest issue was that I felt it dragged. I was listening to it on audible. The audio version was over 14 hours! I felt that if I were reading it on my Fire I would have skimmed a number of times just to get things moving along. I liked all of the characters, but Vale's constantly berating himself for the things he did in the past was a bit wearing. And the contract negotiations went a way bit too long for me. I felt the world building could have used a bit more... world building. I didn't realize it was a dystopian world until well into the story when a comment was made, something to the effect of the end of those times. Sorry, it was audible and I don't have a book to refer back to and my memory is really really bad. The book reads as if it's in present day. They have phones, they go to college, watch movies. Doesn't sound very dystopian. And they mention that women used to exist. That's fine. So if you are going to mention that women existed, then what happened that made them extinct. Often, women DON'T exist in omegaverse reality. I don't take issue with that but I know others do. Because with the ABO of an omegaverse universe, there's really not a need for the role of the female. But if you are going to tell us that they did exist, but something happened and now they don't, what happened? Why bring it up at all if it's not going to at least be explained.
Those were my only "beefs" with the story. I've seen some reviews that state Jason cheated on Vale, and before those claims turn anyone off who might have read the book, I'll throw my two cents out that I disagree. It may be a it of "shades of gray", but it's not full on cheating as far as I'm concerned. (view spoiler)[Jason and Vale had spoken to each other very little at this point. There was no contract between them. They had established that they were each other's erascape, but they weren't bonded and at that point had no idea if they would continue on to establish a relationship, other than the fact that Jason knew he wanted to. So there was nothing between them other than the hormones that drew them together. So when Jason has his "indiscretion" he didn't truly "owe" anything to Vale. He wasn't truly cheating on him other than what could possibly be there if they moved forward. I saw it as shades of gray. They were not committed yet. (hide spoiler)]
The book is very well written. The dialogue is well done and feels very natural. After reading what the second book is about, I definitely want to read that one so despite only giving this one a middle of the road rating, I plan to go on with the series. Hopefully the pacing on the second one will move quicker for me. ...more

I did a considerable amount of eye rolling throughout. Gabriel is the submissive, the omega. But he spends nearly the entire book shaking, crying, and/or curled in a fetal position or cowering, desperately in need of his alpha. I kept wondering if I'd mistaking picked up a M/F book. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind if guys cry in books, and it's great when they are sensitive, but for 96% of the story? And nothing of substance ever really happens other than spanking and sex and lots of Cal declaring "You are mine". Believe me, I love sex in my books and I love dark, kink, and BDSM, just take a peek at my bookshelves, but there wasn't much plot here. Another thing that I had a hard time getting past was, if Gabriel is an omega when he is turned, he should be self-lubricating. This is pretty much cannon to the omega storyline. I read a lot of omegaverse, m-preg, and shifter books, and the one thing that is special about omegas is they are self-lubricating. Can an author stray from cannon? Yes. Can it irritate me when they do? Yes. And there were only the mention of them shifting into wolf form at about 98% into the story, but Gabriel never saw them. Why? Because Cal deemed him to be too sensitive to see them in wolf form. [head desk] It probably would have caused another fetal position and tears. I couldn't have stood it. The story had a lot of potential to be exciting. Gabriel's dad was a senator who was supposedly looking for him the entire time he was with Cal, which was a period of about two months. Had this plot line been explored it could have made for a bit more drama, or a least more plot.
I gave it two stars because despite struggling to get through the story itself, Kari Gregg is a solid writer. The story was well constructed with good editing. I've read other books by her and liked them. I would always recommend her to others. Clearly I'm in the minority though because other reviewer have gushed about how excellent the story is and have rated it much higher than I did. This one just did not do anything for me....more
