Welcome to sometime in the future. A time after the Awakening, which I assume to be when magic came upon the earth again. This is not explained. Actually, many things are not explained in this, my first book by this author.
At times this book was simply awesome: -Intriguing characters -Fascinating world -Crazy technology -Sexy green orcs with tusks -Magical elves with fruit-flavored emissions (YUM!) -No info-dumps -ONE OF THE TOP SEX ON THE HOOD OF THE CAR SCENES EVER!!
And at times it was a mess: -Little details into the actual world itself -Crazy flashbacks in the middle of scenes...THIS DROVE ME NUTS! Sometimes it was hard to tell "when" I was. Other times, this was done very smoothly. -POV's from characters other than the MC's. -Nothing feels resolved at the end. The MC's were messing around with other people and each other. They had history, sure, but I wasn't sure what the through line here was. I suppose I can give it up for originally to the author for writing outside the box. -Sometimes the action was hard to follow; sometimes not. -LACK OF COMMUNICATION!
So, I hemmed and hawed about this one. Three or four, three or four? I settled in the middle and rounded up for originality amongst all the confusion.
Oh, and that car scene!!!!!! To die for!!

Is it me? Is it the book? In this case I pick the book. 2.5 Stars.

I was sooo ready and wanting to like this story! Sci-fi, prisoner/captive, alien race, blood drinkers, assassins, royalty, a planet blanketed in darkness, a mad king. Come on...it should have worked.
Instead, I got simplistic writing and often overly dramatic dialogue. It was so frustrating! The story was there, but the author couldn’t bring it to light...at least not enough for me.
Sure, there were some hot sex scenes, but we are dealing with aliens humanoid species here (who all seems to have a prostate, by the way). Why not give them something more interesting than fangs and eye color? There was a lot of missed opportunity here, my friends, and that makes me sad.
I simply wanted more than this book delivered.
This is only my second read by MA Church, and I enjoyed her first one quite a bit. Now I’m not so willing to pick up any more bearing her name.
My recommendation: read at your own risk.

For once, a series ends without me feeling like I need more from it. Castillo Price did a phenomenal job with the stAwesome conclusion to the trilogy!
For once, a series ends without me feeling like I need more from it. Castillo Price did a phenomenal job with the story arc over the three books. Events were unexpected and their resolution was far from perfect, which lent an air of reality to this sci-fi series.
I thought that Daniel's growth as a character did him justice while not erasing all of his flaws. His relationship with Elijah feels unforced throughout the entire book and series. And while they end up together, there's no pretty bow tying up their future in a beautiful package. I truly appreciated this low key, realistic approach to a relationship that's often overlooked in a lot of MM romance (not that I don't love fluff and HEAs for those comfort reads).
A great series!

Could this be a standalone? Maybe (just barely), but it will make soooooooooooo much more sense, and you will enjoy it I love Murderbot & I love Art.
Could this be a standalone? Maybe (just barely), but it will make soooooooooooo much more sense, and you will enjoy it soooooooooo much more having read all of the Murderbot novellas that come before this novel!
In this one, we see more emotion from Murderbot. We meet Art again (gods I love them)!
While this story is a much larger bite into Murderbot, it’s full of action (and at times, confusion due to many characters that are harder to keep track of via audiobook). A solid 4.5 Stars from me with a solid and thrilling storyline.
I have only two more novellas to read (listen to) in this series and I can only hope there will be more!
