As many, MANY other reviewers have said, the cruelty and repetitiveness of the Heirs prevents me from liking any of them. It's like excusing a murderer or rapist from their deeds because they had a bad childhood. I don't much care why they think their actions are justified at this point. Their momentary blips of conscience don't indicate character growth at all. They just indicate that they are aware that what they are doing is wrong, but go ahead and do it anyway.
All that being said, this series is like crack. I'm losing sleep. I'm obsessed. If the authors wanted to keep me holding out for just...one...more...hour...well, mission accomplished. It reminds me of reading Twilight in my mid twenties and being consumed to the point of ridiculous. I know of all the faults of the characters. I'm not particularly fond of any of them. Lots of melodrama within. I just wasn't a fan of either protagonist. Heroine was too mushy and "innocent", letting the hero, her father, and pretty much everyone treat her like shit, all under the guise of being some overprotected sweet baby girl. I honestly wanted her to end up with the other guy. I felt like they made a much better match. The hero was just a giant douche. We hear about his past and his reasons for being douchey but I still never felt like I knew him or understood his abuse of the heroine. ...more

She's one of the authors that hooked me on reading romance all those years ago. I can't quite bring myself to spend the exorbitant amount that her publisher asks for her ebooks, so I always wait on a library copy to be available. This time, I got the audio before the ebook. The narration was fine, but it wasn't a sexy dude voice or a sultry, versatile woman. It was a somewhat unremarkable older guy, and his narration didn't add to my enjoyment.
The story itself is true to S.B. Alpha hero, supremely stoic and dry, almost a bad guy until he turns on the sexy. Heroine is strong willed and sometimes silly. In this case, the chapters that had me guessing were the best part of the book, and they came toward the end. It was arresting at times, it dragged a little in others. A nice read. I thought the first couple of books were leading me there, but the lack of movement of the series and the stagnant state of Merrit and Ethan's up and down relationship just get boring. Part of my meh may be due to the fact that I'm listening to the audiobooks instead of reading. I mean, the series is good. I love the idea behind it. I just don't find myself sinking into the stories like I feel that I should. I'm ready for more of the weres, more big changes (you do get ONE big change in this book). For me, I enjoyed the read but man, Denny was sooooo ridiculously, unnecessarily guilty and undecided and wishy washy. I was right pissed off with him by the end. Our heroine was verging on doormat territory, too, so there's that. Kind of bummed because the Irish love was displayed well in these pages.

I love her unconventional protagonists. The books I've read by her contain heroes and heroines who have lived a lot of life but still have a lot of life to live. In this book, the hero was supremely abrasive at times. But I like that type of surly, grumpy jackass hero. He also happened to be Scottish, which somehow made all the growls and bossy moments reminiscent of a kilted, wounded warrior. This one just happened to be a chef. The heroine is a widow with two grown daughters who just can't seem to find herself after losing her husband. The story ended up being beautifully told. ...more

I thought I'd sink into this and roll around like a two year old in a ball pit but instead I just sank. It started off okay, with the buildup to the meet-cute and Tristan's ass-holery front and center. As soon as we established how "broken" the protagonists were, though, it all went downhill. There were so many quotes that made me cringe, but the first one that made me question whether or not I'd finish was this tidbit. People just don't say shit like this. It's like cheesy role play.
"We'll use each other to remember them?"
"Only if you want to."
"This sounds like a terrible idea, in the best kind of way."
"There's still this giant part of me that misses Jamie every day. And holding you" - his tongue danced across my bottom lip - "helps me remember holding her."
"Feeling your heartbeats" - I placed my hand against his chest" - "reminds me of his heartbeats."
"Running my fingers through your hair" - he tangled his hands through my blonde locks, making me gasp lightly - "helps me remember her."
"Feeling your skin against my skin" - I slowly lifted his T-shirt - "reminds me of him."

Add in the way Tristan goes from uber macho bad boy to needy and super clingy on a dime and the way the heroine practically begs him for scraps of attention (and then literally begs him to sleep with her) and I just can't. I skimmed some of the rest, but gave up a little over the halfway point. ...more

Mainly for myself, so I can remember why the lower rating. I enjoyed the story...however, the execution was awkward, the plot was riddled with glaring and uncomfortable holes (view spoiler)[ The heroine is stabbed twice in the leg...to the bone, but the wound is never mentioned again, she is raped but has no aftereffects and goes on to have sex within days (hide spoiler)], and the violence was extreme. Rape of important people (view spoiler)[ the heroine is raped, King's childhood friend is raped in a flashback, and another of King's friends is raped by a gang with a stick of some sort (hide spoiler)] constant blood and gore, the death of many likeable characters, and King's over the top high-handed bossiness wore me the eff out. Each book was around 200 pages, the first of which ends on a major cliffhanger. I think this could have either been pared down into one book with less drama or lengthened and strengthened by some hard core beta reads and editing. As is, it felt thrown out there and unfinished. It was a good bare bones plot, and I think I'm more bummed at the lost potential than anything else. ...more

Lots of drama, even when it wasn't warranted. Situations that were a bit eye roll inducing. Example: Protagonist goes to a tattoo shop for moral support for a friend and is pushed into getting a tattoo that she doesn't want. The tattoo artist, who is the hero, knows she wasn't wanting a tat but gives it to her anyways. She picks a tat and a location that moment. Who gets peer pressured into a tattoo?!?! Just immature, imo. The hero turns out to be a very, very bossy guy. I'm okay with bossy and alpha, but there needs to be a reason for it. Not just because he doesn't want the girl to have any say in her life. (Their first date was weird)
I can see this working, maybe for younger readers? Idk, it just came across as silly and rushed and melodramatic....more
Un-put-downable!!!!! It's no secret that I'm a huge Anne Stuart fan, and Bastien from Black Ice will always be a favorite hero of mine. While I can't say that James has usurped Bastien's place in my heart for best ass hole gamma hero, I can say that he is neck and neck with the other Ice series heroes. This is what I feel like I've been waiting for since consuming the Ice series three years ago. More of the Committee...only Peter Masden is in charge now, and we have a whole new set of nearly-unloveable heroes and the women who effing OWN them.
Let's see if I can reel in the gushfest that's trying to spill onto my review space :D
A huge reason that I fangirl over Anne Stuart is because of how true she stays not only to her characters, but to her overall series. The Committee has never been (and I'm assuming never will be) anything less than a hardhearted, cold as ice group of people who do whatever it takes to right some wrongs. That's not to say that everything they do is ethical or legal. Hell no. But they get stuff done, and lucky for us, they give rise to some of the most intense heroes and heroines that have been written into romantic fiction. These people are just the same as they were when the series started.
In this book, the heroine starts out somewhat naive, somewhat lonely, and definitely searching for something that she doesn't know is missing. Somehow the universe deems it a fit time to introduce Evangeline to Bishop, a Committee operative and intrinsically hard hearted man. When she witnesses a murder, Bishop's sadistic partner insists on executing her. But as with all of Stuart's heroines, Evangeline has that intangible something that pulls out James' (Bishop's) protective side. But only for long enough to save the girl. Then, he abandons her and disappears.
And the rest is golden. It's a mental battle for a man who is as cold as they come...a man who has spent his life living with no emotion and no remorse, not to mention no tenderness or love. And poor Evangeline! Trying to move on and yet tied to a man she still loves, even though he wrecked and ruined her. It's the ultimate in the good vs evil dilemma. There is most definitely some evil in James, but his demons come out to play when his "wife" is threatened once again.
Throw these two together again, and the magic that is Anne Stuart is back with a vengeance! I am unreasonably excited about this new series. Especially if this is indicative of how much I'll love it!
