The well-crafted writing of Sarah Lamb is brought to life by the narration of Spencer Dillehay.
This is a story of two individuals who have more in common than they could ever imagine.
Rose Alden is the daughter of a wealthy horse rancher. Her parents are determined to marry her off to a man who’s part of the proper social and economic class. Rose wants more out of life. She’d like her own business, like her father has.
Levi Patterson is her father’s talented horse wrangler, who’s fleeing his former life. The son of a doctor, he was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps. Instead, he chose his own path.
A chance encounter in the stable ignites a spark neither of them can understand but can’t forget. But then, Rose leaves for the big city to be placed under the very watchful eye of her aunt who is determined to find her niece a husband.
Lamb has written a story that is well-paced, populated with great characters, each with their own mannerisms. And those people become very real under the expert narration of Dillehay. He speaks life into the author’s well-written dialogue. He conveys the disdain Rose’s dad has for her sarcastic wit, the disappointment of her mother, as well as the hopes of Rose herself, with ease.
His portrayals of the characters made me laugh in several places. I could see Rose’s mom, her nose pinched, scolding her daughter at the kitchen table.
His narration of events and descriptions also deserve a round of applause. I could feel the beauty of the ranch and smell the fresh air. When a quick and severe storm occurred, I shivered right along with Rose as she struggled to get her horse under control.
What I’m trying to say is that I enjoyed this audiobook tremendously. It was the perfect collaboration of Lamb and Dillehay. And I hope to be reading more from this dynamic duo.

The plot itself is a story within a story. We meet Willow as an adult who has just found an abandoned baby on her doorstep. Her heart says keep the baby and raise it as her own. Her brain fears someone will discover she’s not hers.
As we follow her in the present, she opens doors to her past through a book she’s writing about her life. As she sends chapters to her editor, we have the opportunity to hear them and discover the trauma and abuse she’s withstood. Author Sara Zavacki-Moore seamlessly shifts from Willow’s time in a foster home to the present showing us her doubts, struggles, as well as the joy of being a first-time mom.
But wait, there are still more layers. The story takes place at the height of the global pandemic. A natural germophobe, Willow must grapple the very real fear of contracting Covid and passing it to her daughter—while confronting her past and trying to heal.
The story came to life with Zavacki-Moore’s narration. I believed from the very start she was Willow. How else could she make the story so real? She plopped me into Willow’s world, and I didn’t want to leave. I found myself getting swept up in Willow’s emotions. I thought about the characters even after I finished the book, mourning for some, hoping others were doing well.
This book has everything an audiobook should have: an intriguing and gripping story and flawless narration.
If you’ve never listened to an audiobook before, I highly recommend you start with Tiny House of God. It’s the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. Hands down.

What makes this audiobook unique –
Carolyn A. Lee and Stephanie Hansen partner up to bring readers/listeners one of the best YA books I’ve ever heard/read. The plot is fast-moving which adds to the exhilaration while listening. Her narration brings Altered Helix alive, like a movie. Brilliant from start to finish.
