Nachdem ich mich bereits 67 Seiten im Kopf des Erzählers befand, folgende Passage: “‘Du bist leicht wiederzuerkennen.“ Sie zeigte auf ihren Kopf. Ich trug die Haare jetzt länger und mit einem Tuch zusammengebunden. Ansonsten hatte ich mir äußerlich nie auch nur einen Hauch von Wildheit erlaubt, aber mir die Haare wachsen zu lassen war eine Befreiung gewesen, nachdem feindselige weiße Friseure sie mir jahrelang abrasiert hatten, weil sie nicht wussten, was sie damit anfangen sollten.“
Man sollte denken, ich hätte es begriffen und würde von nun aufmerksamer/offener lesen, und wieder wurde ich überrascht, als ich über Nicole erst nach einer ganzen Weile, als einer der Männer sie überreden will, für einen Bekannten Modell zu stehen, dies erfuhr. “‘Nicole, reiß dich zusammen.‘ ‚Bin ich Teil eines Deals zwischen euch beiden?‘ Rob schlug einen besänftigenden Tonfall an. ‚Ich will Bilder von starken schwarzen Frauen machen. Marshal, erklär’s ihr.“
Andererseits füllen wir doch alle Leerstellen beim Lesen auf, damit wir uns das Gelesene bildlich vorstellen können. Wenn ich mir literarische Figuren vorstelle, kann ich schwerlich die Hautfarbe offenlassen. Ich fülle ja auch fehlende Informationen zu Haar- und Augenfarbe unbewusst einfach auf. Dass Kunzru mich freundlich foppt, mich zwingt, mich mit solchen Gedanken zu befassen, halte ich für die eigentliche Qualität des Buches.
Der Plot selbst hat in meinen Augen Längen. Ich bin davon ausgegangen, dass die Beschreibung der Pandemie-Situation genauso viel Raum einnimmt, wie die der Kunstszene und des Künstlertums; die Szenen in New York ungefähr der Zahl der Szenen in London entsprechen. Tatsächlich nimmt der Rückblick auf das London um 2000 einen ziemlich großen Raum ein, gefolgt von der Odyssee Jays – zu Lasten der anderen genannten Themen. Das fand ich sehr schade, aber das ist möglicherweise auch mal wieder ein bisschen durch den Klappentext getriggert, der eher vom Verlag als vom Autor stammend wird; dort ist prominent von Verschwörungstheorien und Prepper die Rede....more

Da sieht man tasächlich die ganzen Capricchos, Desastres de la Guerra und Los Disparates (ja, auch die Stierkampfszenen, aber da bin ich dann trotz Goya raus). Gezeigt wurde nicht nur jeweils ein Druck, sondern auch die zugehörige Kupferplatte, auf der häufig noch mehr Details zu erkennen waren als auf dem Druck selbst. Phantastisch!
Den Band mit den Abbildungen konnte ich mir dann (trotz spanischer Sprache) nicht entgehen lassen. Dieser Band ist Teil eines Schubers, in dem sich auch eine Mappe mit den Reproduktionen einiger ausgewählter Werke befindet. So habe ich jetzt meinen eigenen Schlaf (oder Traum?) der Vernunft.

Damit, dass er die Vögel aufzählt, die auf des Künstlers Werken erscheinen, sammelt er natürlich Pluspunkte bei mir.
Aber, und diese Liste wird jetzt länger: Da wird so vieles behauptet, was bei näherem Hinsehen nicht Bestand hat. Vieles scheint erfunden, um eine gute Geschichte zu erzählen. Das wäre legitim, wenn unter dem Titel stünde „Eine romanhafte Näherung“ oder ähnliches. Oder Illies könnte diese Geschichten als Assoziationen/Gedanken kenntlich machen, aber er beschreibt sie so, als seien sie recherchierte, geprüfte Fakten. Beispiele: • Walt Disney habe (angespornt von Thomas Mann) in Bambi Landschaften von Caspar David Friedrich eingebaut. Ich habe mir den Film angeschaut und außer ein paar Steinen am Wegesrand, die man als Assoziation an das Elbsandsteingebirge lesen könnte, ist da nichts! • Der befreundete Maler Johan Christian Clausen Dahl hat auf seinem Gemälde „Ausbruch des Vesuv“ eben einen solchen Ausbruch gemalt und zwei kleine Rückenfiguren darauf eingefügt, die den Ausbruch betrachten. Dabei handele es sich angeblich um Dahl selbst und um CDF. Illies spinnt darum eine Geschichte, wie CDF sich nicht von einer Italienreise überzeugen will und der Freund ihn dann kurzerhand stattdessen mittels Bild nach Italien bringt. Schöne Geschichte, aber findet sich dafür irgendein Beleg? Genau das wäre eine schöne Assoziation, aber hier liest es sich als wahre Geschichte. • Das vermutlich letzte Ölgemälde Friedrichs sei „Ansicht der Stadt Neubrandenburg bei Sonnenuntergang und einer Feuersbrunst“. Nein, das letzte Gemälde ist sehr wahrscheinlich „Meeresufer im Mondschein“. Ich habe es selbst in der Hamburger Kunsthalle gesehen und der Gedanke, dass der Maler (nach einem Schlaganfall) sich mit diesem Bild verabschiedet, drängt sich sofort auf. Aber Illies brauchte vielleicht noch ein „Feuer“-Bild für den gleichnamigen Abschnitt seines Buches? • Kleist habe den „Mönch am Meer“ als „Handlungsanweisung und Bühnenbild“ für seinen Selbstmord verstanden. Sollte man bei dieser Behauptung eventuell ein kleines „vielleicht“ einfügen?
Man könnte lange so weitermachen, aber ich gebe lieber noch andere verärgernde Aspekte an: • Warum müssen in neckischen Tonfall ständig Klischees reproduziert werden: “Im Heeresgeschichtlichen Museum in Wien kann man bis heute das Automobil besichtigen, samt der Einschusslöcher, und natürlich auch das Einstecktuch von Sophie mit den Blutflecken, die Österreicher lieben so etwas.“ Oder: “Dass die als Ungeküsste ausgerechnet in jenen Schlafräumen wohnt, die der liebestolle August der Starke einst für seine Lieblingsmätresse, die Gräfin von Cosel gebaut hat, erheitert die Sachsen, die ja immer Freude haben, wenn sich Gott einen Spaß erlaubt. (Hervorhebung von mir) • Und dass ständig die Wendung „bedeutendes Caspar David-Friedrich-Gemälde“ verwendet wird, da hätte vielleicht ein Lektor auch mal streichen können. Wenn wir heute nicht jedes Gemälde, das wir von Friedrich haben oder vielleicht wieder entdecken, als bedeutend einschätzen würden, gäbe es vermutlich dieses Buch nicht. Also warum ständig betonen?
Weniger ein Kritikpunkt als eine Leseempfehlung: Hier wird die Begegnung mit Goethe beschrieben. Zu dieser Begegnung kann ich eine ausführlichere Geschichte empfehlen (klar als Roman bezeichnet): Lea Singers Anatomie der Wolken. Da wird sehr amüsant beschrieben, wie zwei unterschiedliche Künstlertypen mit ganz unterschiedlichem Bildungshintergrund aufeinandertreffen.
Am Ende möchte ich versöhnlich gegen Alle, die dieses Buch lieben, sagen: Ja, ich kann es völlig verstehen. Illies Schreibweise zieht einen in seinen Bann. Aber er schießt oft übers Ziel hinaus oder anders gesagt: Etwas mehr Konjunktiv hätte dem Buch gutgetan. Und ich hätte mich beim Lesen gerne nicht so oft übers Ohr gehauen gefühlt....more

Obwohl ich selten einen Bezug zu moderner Kunst entwickeln kann, habe ich mich schon vor vielen Jahren mal kurz mit Louise Bourgeois auseinandergesetzObwohl ich selten einen Bezug zu moderner Kunst entwickeln kann, habe ich mich schon vor vielen Jahren mal kurz mit Louise Bourgeois auseinandergesetzt – im Rahmen meiner Magisterarbeit über Spinnerinnen und weibliche Spinnen als literarische Motive, lang lang ist es her. Schon damals fand ich interessant, dass Louise eine Spinnenskulptur Maman nannte und es einen Bezug zur Tapisserie-Werkstätte der Eltern gab. Deshalb habe ich jetzt gerne zu diesem Roman einer mir völlig unbekannten Schriftstellerin gegriffen und habe insbesondere genau diese Verbindungen zwischen dem Handwerk des Webens, Knüpfens, Ausbesserns und der Wirken einer Spinne verfolgt und die ganzen vertrauten antiken Anspielungen, die aufploppen:
Ich wuchs auf mit gewebten Geschichten, mit Tapisserien, auf denen Löwen Eber reißen, Geparde Büffel schlagen und drei Schwestern über Leben und Tod bestimmen. Ich lernte von Klotho, die den Lebensfaden spinnt und zu einem Kleid verwebt, von Lachesis, die den Faden von der Spule abrollt und seine Länge bestimmt, und von Atropos, die ihn mit der Schere durchschneidet, dass einem alles gegeben, aber auch alles genommen wird. Ich lernte von Penelope, wie man durch geduldiges Warten, Liebe und Klugheit [also Weben und Wiederauftrennen] einer scheinbar ausweglosen Situation entkommt. […] Von Ariadne, der kunstfertigen Weberin, wie Hochmut im Wettstreit mit einer Göttin durch die Verwandlung in eine Spinne bestraft wird.“
Autsch! Das tut wirklich weh, wenn dieses Motiv doch so zentral ist! Denn natürlich ist es nicht Ariadne, die Athene zum Webwettstreit herausfordert, sondern Arachne. Wobei es ja auch weniger Hochmut ist, als eine berechtige Anklage gegen die männlichen Götter, die Frauen verführen, vergewaltigen, verlassen, denn solche Geschichten zeigt ihr Teppich. Wie gut hätte die Autorin hier einen Bogen schlagen können zu Louises Vater. Und zurück zu Ariadne: Durch das Wollknäuel, das sie Theseus in die Hand drückt, gehört sie ebenfalls in die Reihe der Frauen, die textile Gegenstände äußerst klug einsetzen.
Spannend fand ich die Beschreibung von Details aus der Werkstatt: Das Waschen der Tapisserien im Fluss, wobei es hilfreich ist, wenn das Wasser reich an Tanninen ist. Das Umarbeiten von Teppichen für prüde Amerikaner, die Nacktheit mit Blumen bedeckt sehen wollen.
Dagegen wurden mir die Beschreibungen der Familienkonflikte manchmal etwas lang und redundant: die kranke Mutter, der Macht ausübende, betrügende Vater, die mühsame Befreiung vom väterlichen Einfluss. Eine lesenswerte Emanzipations- und Bildungsgeschichte ist es dennoch. Insbesondere wenn man sich für Louise Bourgeois interessiert....more

Frauen sind schön, Männer benehmen sich machohaft… Der Eindruck verstärkte sich beim Durchblättern und hier und da reinlesen. Nee, das kann ich nicht!
Ich wollte den Plot mit weniger Zeiteinsatz wenigstens per Verfilmung eine Chance geben, und ich fürchte, das ist noch schlimmer als das Buch. Zumindest in der Synchronisierung säuselt Kate Beckingsale in unschuldiger Kinderstimme, während die Männer ständig baggern, flirten, zuzwinkern.
Schwer zu ertragen. Und schade, denn man hätte ja einfach einen guten Kunstkrimi erzählen können. Also keine Bewertung, aber eine Lese- und Schauwarnung! ...more
Großartiger Katalog zur aktuellen Nosferatu-Ausstellung, in deren Mittelpunkt der bekannte Stummfilm steht. Es werden zudem Motive wie Spinnen, Vampire, Golem und Fledermäuse beleuchtet, Verbindungen zum Surrealismus hergestellt, Bilder und Grafiken von Alfred Kubin, Hugo Steiner-Prag und vielen mehr eingebettet. Die Gestaltung des Katalogs ist ebenfalls sehenswert – wie das Cover schon zeigt, die richtige Kombi aus düster und grell.
Ich kann es kaum erwarten, die Ausstellung zu sehen, muss mich aber noch etwas gedulden, weil ich zusammen mit einer Freundin hin will, die erst im März Zeit hat.
Meine Sommerurlaubsplanung hat der Katalog auch schon beeinflusst, weil GR-Freund Gavin mich darauf aufmerksam machte, dass der Film teilweise in Wismar gedreht wurde. Also habe ich gleich eine Unterkunft in Wismar und eine Stadtführung auf Spuren des Films gebucht......more

Denn auch wenn seine Ausführungen erhellend und auch hin und wieder amüsant sind, im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Illustrationen von Kat Menschik, die mal wieder phantastisch sind. Dem Thema gemäß lässt sie es hier richtig knallen. Das Pink ist nahezu neon, die anderen Farben stehen dem kaum nach. Die Blüten der psychoaktiven Pflanzen explodieren nahezu auf den Seiten und überdecken oft Teile des Textes, den man aber dennoch lesen kann. Nachdem Menschik zuvor schon mit Mark Benecke ein ähnliches Buch herausbrachte, bin ich nun auf das nächste umso mehr gespannt....more

Und erst bei der Recherche eben fand ich heraus, dass die Geschichten, die ich unter dem Titel "Papa Moll" kenne, gar nicht zur Reihe gehören, sondern eine Art Fortsetzung/Plagiat anderer waren.
Auf der einen Seite des des Bogens (96 x 76 cm) befinden sich ganz viele kleine der Bildergeschichten, auf der Rückseite dann eine einzelne, große Zeichnung der beiden Protagonisten.

Wie so vielen anderen ist mir Walter Trier vor allem durch seine Buchcover und Illustrationen zu Erich Kästners Kinderbüchern vertraut. So vertraut, dass ich oft meine, seinen Stil irgendwo zu erkennen, auch wenn es manchmal nur ein anderer Zeichner aus Triers Generation ist.
Und so lechze ich seit langem nach diesem Werk im Original, nachdem ich herausfand (durch die wunderbare Arbeit von Antje M. Warthorst), dass der nach England emigrierte Zeichner für das Britische Informationsministerium diese Broschüre illustrierte, die in verschiedenen Sprachen in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern verbreitet wurde. Wie ich dieser Neuauflage und erstmaligen Übersetzung entnahm, konnte der Besitz mit der Todesstrafe belegt werden. Nicht dass mich das überrascht, aber es schwarz auf weiß zu lesen, ist doch noch einmal etwas anderes.
Exemplare der Erstausgaben sind im Internet kaum aufzutreiben (und wenn dann nicht erschwinglich), was einem bei der Auflage, die angesichts der Intention sicher nicht klein war, zunächst überrascht – bei Bedenken der Konsequenzen, die der Besitz hatte, aber auch wieder nicht. Man muss wohl vermuten, dass viele erschrocken das „Pamphlet“ sofort vernichtet haben.
Und jetzt halte ich dieses Werk endlich in Händen, und nun? Viele der Illustrationen sind nicht ganz so pointiert und schwarz-humorig wie erwartet. Das Lektorat lässt an einigen Stellen zu wünschen übrig und auch der Satz hätte besser sein können.
Bin ich nun enttäuscht? Nein, keinesfalls. Triers Kunst, das politische Anliegen der Publikation und die Freude darüber, dass Walter Trier hiermit vielleicht wieder etwas bekannter wird und seine Schaffensbreite (über die putzigen Figürchen in Kinderbüchern hinaus) sowie seine (Exil-)Biografie wieder ins Bewusstsein der breiten Öffentlichkeit gelangen könnten, machen die kleinen Schnitzer mehr als wett.
Und dann ist ja heute vielleicht auch ein, im negativsten Sinne, besonderer Tag. Beginnt in Europa gerade wieder ein Krieg? Man betrachtet dann manches Bild mit anderen Augen.
Das richtige Büchlein, wenn man man gerade buchstabenmüde ist und trotzdem ein Buch zur Hand nehmen möchte.

Leider wurde meine Erwartungshaltung nicht so ganz erfüllt, denn ich rechnete in viel größerem Umfang mit der Analyse berühmter Gemälde. Und ja, es wird auch Fabritius‘ berühmter Distelfink genannt und ein Gemälde Picassos und ein paar andere Berühmtheiten – in erster Linie handelt es sich aber um weniger bekannte Werke des aktuellen Jahrhunderts.
Es macht dennoch Freude, sich das Buch zu erblättern und ich habe einige schöne Darstellungen entdeckt, die ich bislang nicht kannte, aber ich bin eben doch mit etwas anderen Erwartungen rangegangen, sodass ich nicht uneingeschränkt begeistert bin.

So wenig sich ein Kunstwerk fassen lässt, sondern sich durch den Betrachter und die Perspektive stets verändert, so lässt sich auch die Erzählerin nicht fassen. Ist sie identisch mit der Autorin? Ist sie über die einzelnen Kapiteln hinweg identisch? Nein, wohl nicht, auch wenn sich die Betrachtungen sehr biografisch gesättigt anfühlen und der poetische Ton die Geschichten zusammenhält. Und ganz nebenbei wird mir Atmosphäre Buenos Aires vermittelt.
In den kurzen Episoden sind die betrachteten Bildern immer mit Erinnerungen der jeweiligen Erzählerin verbunden. Und fast immer werden literarische Werke zitiert oder zumindest erwähnt. So wachsen diese drei Dimensionen Kunst, Leben und Literatur stets ganz wunderbar zusammen und der Leser beginnt Kunstwerke mit anderen Augen zu „lesen“ (um mit einem Bild zu sprechen, dass bereits Umberto Eco in Bilder lesen sehr gut mit Leben gefüllt hat).
In vielen anderen Fällen würde ich bedauern, dass die beschriebenen Bilder nicht auch im Buch abgebildet sind, hier aber machte genau das den Reiz aus: Diese Bilder im Internet suchen und außer ihnen dann auch andere Bilder finden, sowie Geschichten über/zu diesen Bildern. Man mäandert ständig lustvoll vom eigentlich Beschriebenen weg.
Ein Buch also, das man ganz langsam lesen sollte und zulassen, dass es einen immer wieder weg- und weiterführt. Ich hoffe sehr, dass auch andere Bücher von Gainza ins Deutsche übersetzt werden!...more

Neben den bekannten Klassikern wie dem Cover von Döblins Berlin Alexanderplatz oder denen, die John Heartfield gestaltet hat oder den Walter Trier-Illustrationen zu Erich Kästners Kinderbüchern, findet man auch kuriose Umschläge von mir bisher unbekannten Büchern, zum Beispiel:

Mal erinnern diese scheinbar abstrakten, symmetrischen Formen an die derzeit omnipräsenten Darstellungen eines COVID-Virus, dann wieder glaubt man Formen aus Science Fiction-Filmen wiederzuerkennen. Vieles erscheint einfach zu unwirklich.
Und dann hin und wieder erkannt man ganz konkret Tiere: Die Spinnentiere hätte ich nicht gebraucht; Fledermäuse und Vögel haben mich dann wieder bezaubert.
