Die Geschichte ist gut und nett erzählt, aber nicht überragend. Großartig ist dagegen die Rückseite dieses Bilderbogens: Auf tiefschwarzem Hintergrund ist weiß gezeichnet (oder radiert?) eine Art Stilleben zu sehen, das verschiedene Momente des Abends aufnimmt, insbesondere das Äffchen und die beiden Sittiche, die bei dem gastgebenden Paar leben. Der Erzähler ist nämlich nicht ganz einverstanden mit Shelleys Geschichte und so schreibt er ihr einen Brief, der uns mit diesem Büchlein vorliegt.
Auch er sehnte sich einst danach, sich einen Freund zu erschaffen. Den Arztberuf gab er auf und er wurde Leichenbestatter, um sich diesem Vorhaben zu widmen. Endlich fällt ihm die Leiche einer Frau, die ihn schon lange (unerwidert) begehrte, in die Hände: Constanze Fledder.
„Ich zögerte. Mir war die ethische Problematik klar, aber mehr noch als mein aberwitziger Plan, Leben zu erwecken, verstörte mich der Einfall, ausgerechnet Constanze Fledder zu fleddern!“ - Ja, das kalauert gewaltig.
Das wäre aber kaum eine Ralf König-Geschichte, wenn der Erzähler nicht eigentlich auf einen männlichen Gefährten setzte. Zum Glück stirbt dann ein attraktiver Wanderarbeiter („Er war von oben bis unten so schön wie tot!“), beide Leichen werden kombiniert…

Aber nein, das funktioniert für mich nicht. Soll das etwa erotisch sein? Mich lässt diese Begegnung zweier Menschen, die sich beim Internetsex kennenlernen, völlig kalt. Dann finden sich auch noch Dialoge wie
„Sorry wegen der Szene neulich Abend, ich bin einfach verliebt in dich“ „Ich weiß. Weißt du was, ich bin auch verliebt in dich“ „Das ist ja mega!“

Gerade nach der Lektüre von From Hell, das mir von der zeichnerischen Seite wenig gefiel, ist das ein wahrer Genuss. Ich mag das Werk kaum als Graphic Novel bezeichnen, sondern als Bildband.
Sehr erholsam finde ich auch, dass die Bilder für sich stehen und immer die gesamte rechte Seite einnehmen. Texte stehen, wenn überhaupt auf der linken Seite. Dialoge gibt es nicht und das unterstützt die düstere Stimmung.
In merkwürdigem Gegensatz zu den klaren, schönen Bildern steht der Inhalt der Geschichte. Wir sehen alles durch die Augen eines Sexualtäters, der schon als Junge lernte, seine dunklen Triebe für sich zu behalten – und im Geheimen umso grausamer auszuleben. Es erschüttert einen, dieser Geschichte zu folgen und ist gleichzeitig von den Zeichnungen beeindruckt.
Die Vergewaltigungen, die gezeigt werden, wirken teilweise gar nicht so gewaltsam, so als ob die Frauen sich das so wünschen. Das wäre eine fatale Aussage, doch erfährt man am Ende, wie sehr die Realität der Opfer vom Erleben des Täters abweicht. Nicht nur die Sicht eines psychisch Kranken also, sondern – auch vor dem Hintergrund von MeToo – der Hinweis, wie sehr die Wahrnehmungen über einvernehmlichen oder eben nicht einvernehmlichen Sex auseinander gehen können.
Es ist immer blöd, nach der Message zu fragen, aber hier denke ich am Ende wirklich: Was soll ich denn jetzt mitnehmen? Was hat das zu bedeuten? Wie lässt sich das im Einzelnen mit dem genannten Mythos von Artemis und Siproitis verbinden? Warum ist die Titelfigur so grausam zu der Priesterin? Dass ich keine Antworten erhalten, finde ich gerade positiv.
Erst das Nachwort verrät die zusätzliche Inspiration für die Geschichte, nämlich dass die Autorin selbst, bereits als junges Mädchen, wiederholt nur knapp einer Vergewaltigung entging....more

Zu Letzterem: Gerade dass ich von Bild zu Bild springe und dieses Bild jeweils den gesamten Bildschirm meines Laptops ausfüllte, ja mich nahezu ansprang, zog mich unglaublich in die Geschichte hinein. So verstärkte sich das Filmische der Geschichte und damit die Spannung. Die Artwork sprach mich ebenso an wie der Humor und das Dunkle, Verzweifelte und Irre des Jokers. Die Handlung ist angesiedelt in Giverny und damit natürlich im Dunstkreis des Impressionismus. Also eine Geschichte, die besonders gut funktioniert, wenn sie nicht nur über Text vermittelt wird.
Dass ich nicht die höchste Bewertung vergeben kann, liegt sicher an meiner mangelnden Kenntnis des Genres. Die Überzeichnung der Charaktere gehört sicher genauso zur Graphic Novel wie der leichte Sexismus. Das stelle ich mehr fest als dass ich es ernsthaft kritisiere, aber es fühlt sich dann leider so an, dass ich nicht der Leser (geschweige denn Leserin) bin, an den die Autoren/Zeichner bei ihrer Arbeit dachten....more

Dass es am Ende bei den Hochzeiten der beiden Entkommenen tolle Festmahle gibt - dem Hunger der Vergangenheit zum Trotz - das kenne ich von den Grimms nicht.
Der eigentliche Grund das Buch zu erwerben, war für mich, dass es tolle Illustrationen geben sollte. Diese haben mich aber sehr enttäuscht. Sie bestehen größtenteils aus schwarz-weißem Gewische, nur in einem kleinen Ausschnitt wird das Erzählte illustriert. Das ist mir für eine Quasi-Graphic Novel zu wenig. Noch dazu, weil Illustrationen und Text immer getrennte Doppelseiten einnehmen; man also nie beides zusammen auf sich wirken lassen kann. Selbst für ein illustriertes Buch wäre mir das zu wenig. Da lobe ich mir ja sogar den alten, biederen Ludwig Richter....more

Die Übersetzung empfand ich manchmal als etwas plump, aber das ist nur so ein Gefühl.
Und geschrieben/gezeichnet ist das schon eher für ein männliches Publikum – die Frauen sind Schlampen und der Zeichner lässt sie allzu gerne ihre Reize zeigen.
Aber die Atmosphäre ist schön düster und es gibt nicht zu viel Text. Das macht es mir leichter, denn ich habe mich immer noch nicht daran gewöhnt, beides gleichzeitig wahrzunehmen: Bilder und Text.
Besonders amüsant fand ich es, in diesem eher altertümlichen Ambiente Anspielungen auf die Gegenwart und jüngere Vergangenheit zu finden: Der Fotograf benutzt eine recht moderne Kamera und ein Laptop. Die verführerische Melody lebt im ehemaligen Zimmer ihrer Mutter, aus deren Zeit noch Filmplakate von Dirty Dancing und Top Gun an der Wand hängen. Gleichzeitig weiß man ab der ersten Seite, dass die Geschichte auf Guy de Maupassants Erzählung Die Angst beruht; und man bekommt glatt Lust diese Vorlage auch zu lesen....more
Diese hochgelobte Graphic Novel hinterlässt bei mir einen zwiespältigen Eindruck: Absolut großartig finde ich die zahlreichen Anspielungen und das schiDiese hochgelobte Graphic Novel hinterlässt bei mir einen zwiespältigen Eindruck: Absolut großartig finde ich die zahlreichen Anspielungen und das schier unglaublich umfangreiche Personal, das aus vielen historischen Figuren besteht. Da wären nicht nur direkt am Fall beteiligte Personen wie der Ermittler Frederick Abberline, die Opfer und verschiedenen Tatverdächtigen, sondern Figuren, die man anderweitig kennt: Nicholas Hawksmoor, Queen Victoria, Buffalo Bill, William Blake, der Elefantenmensch, Oscar Wilde… Zudem immer wieder Namen, Mythen, Orte und Gegebenheiten, die man recherchieren möchte und die zu einem ganz eigenen, wenn auch düsteren Bild Londons im späten 19. Jahrhundert führen. Dass dabei auch allerhand wüste Verschwörungstheorien zusammengesponnen werden, kann ich angesichts dieses atemberaubenden Kosmos gut verzeihen.
Aber: Mit dem Zeichenstil bin ich nie warm geworden. Das ist mir zu krakelig, zu wenig erkennbar, ja gerade zu lieblos. Dass ich damit hadere, hat sicher auch mit meiner mageren Comic-Erfahrung zu tun, aber ich fürchte, dass selbst die angekündigte colorierte Version da nur wenig helfen wird. Und zudem war die Geschichte ja auch in Schwarz-Weiß konzipiert. Der zweite Kritikpunkt ist gewissermaßen die Kehrseite dessen, was ich oben überschwänglich lobe. Sehr viel muss dem Laien und selbst dem „Ripperlogen“ erklärt werden, was einen sehr umfangreichen Anmerkungsteil zur Folge hat. Den zu lesen, reißt einen aus dem Lesefluss, ihn zu ignorieren dagegen zu manchem Verständnisproblem. Ńur weil ich das Buch in der Gruppe gelesen habe, fand ich immer Antworten auf meine Fragen, ohne sklavisch an diesem Teil des Buches zu kleben. Und schließlich hätten es auch gerne ein paar Seiten weniger sein können. Bei mir war irgendwann ein bisschen die Luft raus. ...more
