Occupied Vienna, 1945. Rollo Martins is a penniless author of cheap western novels barely scraping by, and always getting into incidents, especially with the ladies. His luck seemingly taking a good turn when his friend Harry Lime invites him to Vienna to spend some time. Rollo happily jumps at the opportunity and eagerly travels to meet his long esteemed friend, only to find him dead the day before. Dude can’t catch a break!
This was a fairly neat whodunit mystery. Not mind blowing by a long shot, yet not disappointing either. The Vienna of 1945 occupied by Soviet, American, British and French forces felt wildly contrived, but, to my surprise, bewildering realistic. Intermittently entertaining, occasionally amusing and sporadically funny. The characters and execution were done right, the ending left a bit to be desired. On the whole, just a sufficiently good enough novella to spend the time. Not a bad choice mind you, for a used book. You can always count on good ol’ Greene to give you a solid one.
Viena ocupada, 1945.

Buenos Aires, 1950’s. Painter Camilo Canegato arrives to ‘La Madrileña’, Ms. Milagros boarding house. Short, shy, scrawny looking, extremely compliant; Camilo seems like the perfect quiet house tenant. And for more than ten years nothing has disturbed the peace of the inhabitants of ‘La Madrileña’; that is, until a series of unexpected perfumed pink letters start to constantly arrive for Camilo, from a mysterious young lady named Rosaura. The love affair quickly sparks the life and daily gossip of the many guest of the house. Who is this Rosaura? And what is happening to good ol’ Camilo?
This was just delightful! Highly enjoyable. The beginning was perfect and one of the best things I’ve ever read. So absorbing, and funny! I absolutely LOVED the first half with Ms. Milagros. Lost count of how many times it made me laugh out loud, worthy of five stars. Milagros way of speaking was just hilarious, impossibly argentine; maybe old fashioned argentine but still, as argentine as it possibly can get. As the story progresses the tone of the last third becomes increasingly dark and somber, my enjoyment slowly diminishing; until the dreaded final resolution, which I sadly found closer to three stars. The mystery slowly unfolding through the police testimonies of Ms. Milagros, tenant David Reguel, Camilo, Eufrasia and, finally, Rosaura. Reguel’s testimony was also good, and a nice twist to the story, but nothing remotely close compared to captivating Milagros. Camilo, Eufrasia and Rosaura’s parts were ok I guess, but somewhat disappointing.
Averaging everything, a solid four stars; and a local favorite. I haven’t read much argentine literature, but this one I can definitely vouch for, as much as Sabato’s Tunnel at least. Looking forward to reading more of the author sometime soon.

¡Deleitable!
Buenos Aires, 1950.

Ms Ellen March, separated, single mother, gets tired of city life and ponders over moving outside the city. When she finds a secluded house in the middle of Virginia woods, she doesn’t really care about the town’s gossip and that it may be haunted by an old witch’s ghost; for her, it’s the perfect dreamed house. And it is, until strange events start to happen. Is it her imagination? Has the witch returned? And what about that mysterious white cat?
This cozy mystery starts wonderfully. One of the most clever writing I ever remember seeing. Unfortunately, the witty writing ended soon after the beginning, or maybe the feeling just wore off. Regardless, the excellent start got me captivated enough to carry me until the end. Ms March plays a nice lead, the chemistry with her daughter Penny is great. Everyone in town is kind of a jerk. But who cares? A fairly enjoyable read. Not exactly recommendable, and maybe somewhat dated, but a worthy read nonetheless.
I think the title of the book is utterly misleading, and I could not love it more for it.

In this novel we learn the story of Indiana, a masseur and exceptional healer. Innocent, sincere, and open to life, but with several love problems. Her path invariably ends up crossing the one of an implacable serial killer. Her young daughter, Amanda, and Ripper, a role playing game, may just be the only thing that might be able to stop him.
Promoted as Allende's first mystery, in truth it appears much more to be a romance novel vaguely disguised as a crime one. A pretty entertaining read, but with some reservations. The novel takes some time to start, but after the first quarter it becomes really quite gripping, the other three quarters of the book went by in a blur. However, something that I cannot forgive Allende, is that you can't end a 400p novel in a 2p epilogue. That is just simply wrong. It practically lacks of closure whatsoever. Unforgivable. But even still, a worthy read.

Imperdonable. Pero aún así, valió la pena.
