Title:Three Mages and a Margarita Author:Annette Marie Series:The Guild Codex: Spellbound, Book 1 Genre:Urban Fantasy My Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Summary from the Publisher
Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig. It went downhill the moment they asked for a trial shift instead of an interview--to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete jerks, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right? I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they ... offered me the job? It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here. So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course--with a pay raise.
My Review: I just absolutely love love love this author! To be completely honest, I didn't even realize it was her until I downloaded the book off of an ad with a little snippet, but I became even more excited when I did finally realize it. The author, Annette Marie, first got me hooked on her Young Adult Steel & Stone series and I have always considered her one of my favorites! So much so, that you will find a link to the author's page at the top of my review. I encourage everyone who loves some paranormal, fantasy books with strong women and a huge dose of sassy, to pick Marie's books up immediately. You won't be disappointed and you also won't get that feeling that you have read this book before; as is the curse of this genre. While everything always seems over done, Marie's books are always fresh, exciting, and give you a creative, detailed, thoroughly original setting and characters.
Okay.... enough gushing about the author; it's time to start gushing about this book!!
I feel like I need to encourage readers to pick this book up, and while some may be bored by what they believe the story might be like, I want to literally grab you by the shoulders and shake you so you pay attention to what I'm about to say.
NUMBER ONE: This is NOT a reverse harem book!!! Don't get me wrong, I can get down with reverse harem books like no body else, but I get worn out on that story-line from time to time and I would have passed this book up if it hadn't said that it specifically wasn't. The three mages are definitely sexy in each of their own ways, but there is a clearly laid out single love interest; which of course, isn't the one I wanted, because somehow, in every book, I always want the love interest to be different than the way the author writes it - its my curse! LOL! Oh, and by the way, this isn't a love triangle either, so as readers, we do not have to read that beaten to dust plot again. I loved the dynamic with the four main characters in the book and I can't wait to see them grow with the series - something that this author excels at in her writing and book series.
NUMBER TWO: This is NOT your typical Urban Fantasy!! There is nary a private detective or investigator in sight!!!! Okay, well, Tori's brother is a cop but it has nothing to do with the story-line... yet. I mean who really knows how this going to develop unless I read the entire series? Which, let's be real here, I will be devouring this series. Anyways, our sassy Tori is just a regular gal with a temper and a tremendous amount of courage and willingness to protect her friends. She is whip smart and tenacious, and her temper makes for some outright hilarity through the book. This gem of an Urban Fantasy book is refreshing and addicting, and yes, I want more! I even had the villain in the story pegged wrong and I absolutely loved being wrong! It made the book even better.
I could continue to go on, but the two things I pointed out should be enough to make you come to your senses and decide to read this book now!I'm always looking for a fresh story in the genre's I love and its been getting harder and harder the more I read; yet, when I find a book like this, I am thoroughly impressed and immediately in love.
Plus Side: This book and the entire series is available by Kindle and through the Kindle Unlimited Subscription....more

Shortened Summary from the Publisher:
For a decade, I’ve hated the supernaturals who owned my world.
I hunted them. I killed them.
And now, in the most grand twist of fate—I am bonded to one of them.
Oh, the irony.
My Review:
Obviously, if a book is coming in as a solid 2.5, it had potential for greatness, yet I personally found the 'cons' of this book to be surpassing in the potential. So, lets dig in, shall we? *rubs hands together*
The potential for greatness lies in that of the world that the author had built for this series. It's a pretty freaking radical concept, and sometimes I wonder if it might not be an option for the world's great apocalypse.... and forgive me for departing from my review to inform you of what options I've squirreled away in mind as our potential future fantasy apocalypse: Number One : Zombies. Yes, you read that right, I went with the ol' cliche Zombie apocalypse. I mean, the ability of scientists to create and experiment on things best left alone to God, is astounding; so my Zombie apocalypse relies heavily on the idea that it is science driven, not a virus. Number Two: Aliens. And again, cliche but a wise idea to consider seeing as how there is no way we are the most intelligent life forms in the universe. I mean, kids were just eating Tide Pods not that recently, so we've set the bar pretty low. Number Three: Computers and/or Technology. Watch the Terminator. End explanation. And finally, Number Four: Paranormal Existence proven real, which is exactly what this author based her own book on, and in a very clever way.
So, this author took our world, and morphed it into a new world order of magic and humans on the bottom of the totem pole. However, she also very creatively intermingled the demon Lucifer running this realm, which for me, was kind of the icing on the cake, because personally, as a Christian woman, I could very much see this as being one of the ways that the real apocalypse could take shape, but we will leave that discussion for another day. Anyways, we get a book packed with witches, vampires, werewolves, shifters, demons and many many more of the Supernatural community gambit, stirred together in this book and that alone, was fascinating with great potential. Con: there were memories from the main character that didn't seem to sync up with the 'Magic Wars' and the character's age Additionally, I liked the main character's multi-dimensional persona that the author created. She was hands-down badass, but was flawed with her guilt, paranoia, and what she felt was her own damnation. Con: Piper seemed to do a complete 180 in a matter of a few sentences within her own inner monologue that made the relationship between her and Nat seem like it was one of those old cd's I used to play, but it would constantly skip while playing due to scratches on it. I felt like it should have taken Piper longer to actually like Nat, than it did. I know that the author tried to do that, but the scenes didn't match up with the feeling. Also, I didn't think her sarcasm was witty, but rather annoying and her constant use of the word fuck was grating and immature. Using the word fuck every other sentence doesn't make the character 'hard' or 'badass'; it makes them lacking a vocabulary and dignity. I don't understand, and probably never will, why people think swearing makes them edgier or why people stereotype bad guys or hardcore persons with a vocabulary of purely functional swearwords. It made the book tacky. Con: All. The. Other. Characters. The other characters in the book were extremely dull compared to our ass-kicking-foul-mouth-filled-with-guilt-and-shame-edgy-fighting-woman. And if you heard some of the distaste I have for how I hyphened described her, you would be correct. Anyways, it wasn't until writing this review that I realized how lame the other characters were. Every other single character in here was exactly the same in the beginning as they were in the end, not even 2-dimensional... like negative 2-dimensional. Oh, ugh, I almost forgot.... Lucifer. Just ick ick ick with a side of nasty ick. With so many ways to portray him, this was a childlike tantrum throwing whiny rapist sociopath - and that mix did not go well.
Okay, enough whining. I basically only liked the potential of the world the author built - and it wasn't until I concluded this review did I realize I was lending some generosity to the positiveness of my review based on the 'what if this book was completely different but in the same world' outlook.
Read at your own risk; this series will be going on my DNF Series Shelf...more

This book completely took me by surprise and reminded why I love the paranormal genre so very much. Get ready for a darkly entertaining vampire story that leaves you breathless and craving more with each turn off the page.
I have to admit, I really didn't have high hopes for this book. I thought to myself, it looks interesting enough, maybe I'll give it a shot. I find myself like many others, totally worn out on the whole Twilight vampire paranormal genre.
Surprisingly, this book was actually quite fantastic. The characters were very easy to fall in love with, the plot was fast and entertaining, and I couldn't put this book down! I found myself turning page after page well into the night, because I just had to find out what Pandora had to remember and what was going to happen next!
If you're like me, and are sick of your typical vampire paranormal book, then you need to pick this book up immediately! This book has it all: betrayal intrigue, fantastic paranormal characters and a knock you out of the park twisted plot. ...more

The problem is, she couldn't care less about what the Center expects from her. I was so extremely lucky to have been given a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for a honest review.
Heck to the yes you sexy kick butt necromancer chick! I absolutely love how freaking awesome this book is. This one completely took me by surprise. It wrapped me up and took me for a ride that I'll never forget.
What an awesome spin on necromancy and vampires. My mind is completely blown. I honestly haven't enjoyed a book about necromancers so much since Garth Nix's series. This was such a unique spin and has so much originality in it for a book that is part of an over populated dried out genre. I mean, seriously, I can tell you exactly how every other paranormal urban fantasy book will go and I can sure as heck tell you that every main character is a private investigator. This book doesn't go by any script and that's probably why I ate it up like I was starving.
This is definitely a series that I will be reading with zeal!

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.
Wowzers!!!!
Did I mention how fortunate I was to get a copy of this book!? Because, it wasn't just fortunate. It was as if the book gods looked down upon me and smiled. They said, our poor avid fantasy lover reader has not found a new series to fall head over heels in love with this year. We must remedy that. Here, have this book!
Okay, book gods and all aside, this was freaking fantastic. I mean seriously, it has the best recipe for a freaking amazeballs book. Its like the author made a check list of all things phenomenal and somehow managed to include every single thing on her list without even having to try! The book was absolutely along the lines of being epic with the author making it look effortless.
The characters are kick butt fantastic. I mean, come on! Who doesn't like a sassy strong female lead who has the worst jokes this side of the continent? Its just a big ball of awesome. A new twist on fae in a modern world has a needs no saving criminal with morals lead character with a midget sidekick genie with a knack for disastrous wishes and the ultimate hands-off-no-touchy-bad-boy-dreamcicle. Yeah, its that kind of awesome.
My only real disappointment is, that while I've been supremely lucky in receiving an arc copy of this book, who knows when the next book comes out! ...more

Blood is on the menu and her earlier fears of turning hairy at full moon are well founded. It’s time for Elena to sharpen her claws and kick some serious ass.
My Review:
This is still awesome series, but.... my God, can we please get to the freaking climax already? i need to know what is really going on and this continuous build- up with no release is starting to slowly kill me!
I love the writing though. The author does a phenomenal job capturing the exact tenor of emotions and the complexities of each individual character. Its just that I need... more?? Trust me, I'm just as confused as you are right now.
I just want to the story to keep moving forward and while yes, we definitely get some questions answered in this installment, I just feel like we are at a stand-still. In my personal experience, this is what normally happens in a trilogy and I call it the "the 2nd book filler syndrome". This is where I am at with this series.
Although, I am most definitely excited for the next installment, I just need it to be more than this one was....more

Another smashing hit in one of my new favorite series! I absolutely friggin' love these characters and the story that this author puts together.
I'm serious, these are my favorite characters of 2016. Wait.... I think I've just created a new goodreads bookshelf. Yup, I totally did. I mean it though, when I wasn't reading this book, all I was doing was thinking about Elena, Sebastian, Lucas, William... you get the idea.
This author is extremely original and she definitely keeps surprising me! Every time I think I might have something figured out, bam! I'm wrong. Being wrong has never felt so good. I keep getting these little hints of the upcoming darkness and I've gotta tell you, I'm totally hooked. Things are definitely about to take a turn for the worse and I know its going to be a fantastic third book.

Fantastic. Fan-FREAKING-tastic. So unbelievably awesome. Thank you book gods for smiling down upon me at the begining of 2016 and seeing fit to bestow upon me a series worth biting into.
Its everything that the paranormal fantasy genre has been built on but so much more. You can not imagine how many times I was squealing and jumping up and down because my nerdy need for a good paranormal book was fulfilled. More than fulfilled. My cup run'eth over.
!!!!
I'm beyond giddy, if you can't tell. I'm serious. If I have to read one more wanna be paranormal Twilight copycat- I'm going to burn down the publishing company who published it. So imagine my absolute joy at finding a book with a complete and absolutely different kind of story.
Yes, we have werewolves and we have vampires and we have magic wielders... *ahem* Protectors. Not only that, but we have a kick butt, sassy, can take care of herself- don't need no saving here heroine. She is beyond bad-ass. She is like... the anti-Bella of paranormal books everywhere. Thank you Jesus!
(P.s. - I actually loved the Twilight series. The aftermath of unoriginal books trying to copy the epic that was Twilight? Yeah, not so much)
Bottom line, this book is A-mazing. Capital 'A' here! I highly recommend this book to anyone, everywhere.

Why did I ask myself that? Because, I just don't know why it took me this freaking long to pick up this book. I'm serious here people. I'm baffled. I have no idea why I haven't devoured this book sooner, but, now that I have, consider me hooked.
This story... My god, this story! I'm left speechless trying to sing its praises. I just don't know how to quite put into words just how amazing this book is.
It's phenomenal. Epic. The reason that the fanasty genre exists. Mind blowingly fantastic.
That is how I would describe this book. Not even for a second will you find yourself trudging through this book trying to get past a certain part. Instead, you will find yourself captivated with each chapter, paragraph, sentence, word.
This is the absolute best example of the fanasty genre and the author is, by far, a stunning example to her peers.

I was so very lucky to be given a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
The book gods have looked down upon me and seen the horrible strife I've been muddling through with one awful young adult/fanasty book after another. Yes, they looked down upon me and decided to spare me. The delivered unto me a shining jem called "Hope's Decree".
If you can't tell by the overly dramatic rendition of the above paragraph, I found this book to be beyond stellar. Seriously, the cover and the description just do not do this book any justice. Actually, if I had just seen the cover and read the description on my own time and I had not been given a copy of this book, I actually don't think I would have read it. Thank goodness fate intervened and a copy of this book fell into my lap!
I'm sure all my fellow readers are aware that this genre is quickly becoming worn out with awful, unoriginal stories that make you cringe while reading them; so to find a fresh, original book like this, is a rare occasion indeed.
The author writes a fantastically creative and captivating storyline. I was thoroughly impressed with how she took the 'Pandora's Box' theme and somehow made it completely new and intriguing. Seriously, hands down, this has got to be one of my favorite spins on old school mythology.
The characters are so freaking intense and they play off of each other magnificently. Both Morpheus and Blain have a starring slot on my 'bookshelf boyfriends' shelf. Although, is it so wrong that I really wanted Morpheus to be the 'one'? I think I just like to be contradictory, honestly. Anyways, they are both amazing, you feel me, love? ;)
The only reason that this book rated at 4 Stars instead of 5 Stars was actually due to the back and forth complete indecision of Trinity and Blaine's romantic(or perhaps not so romantic) relationship. It was almost like watching a ping pong tournament on crack. I think I got whiplash trying to keep up with them.
All in all, this was a very fun and exciting read and I can't wait to see what else I can discover from this author....more

She balances just enough steam with a boatload of dark edginess and a fast paced interesting plot. She's found the equation that makes for a perfect dark paranormal romance with the added bonus of kick arse, hot as coals and tough as nails characters.

... I'm addicted to this series! I most definitely just read the first two books on one sitting. I can't even begin to describe how awesome it was too read them back to back except for the fact that sleep is now a foreign thing to me and who's, I've got so many things to do today... Being an adult sucks sometimes.
Anyways...
This series is just so captivating to me. I love the plot and the characters kick ass. The tension with the romance is building and I'm about to burst. I want, no, I NEED to know what happens next! I was totally thrown through a loop when Declan became the front and center with the mate bond. I definitely did not see that coming.... At all, although I hey this nagging sense that I should have.

My inner book nerd is doing its happy dance. I loved this book. Do you know the feeling when you finish a book and you are grinning from ear to ear and you have that little bit of shortness of breath from excitement? That's what this book did to me. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm sorry, but we obviously can't be friends.
The author did a fantastic job with making her storyline and ideas shine through with originality; especially in a genre that has been suffering from a lack of creativity. This book has been very aptly described as a dark fantasy and has more than lived up to my expectations. It has, in fact, far exceeded them.
There is plenty of artfully placed conflict, romantic tension, dark motives and manipulation woven throughout the entire book. It left me wanting so much more and I'm practically desperate to keep reading.
Aria is a fantastic kick butt heroine. She's smart, fierce, sassy without being overdone, and an all around fire wielding badass! And thank the book gods... no stupid freaking insta-dumb-love. Thank you Jesus. In fact, while there is a definite romantic tension element, it's not the focus of the book and it only adds to the story instead of blindingly taking over the book.

**** This Book Is A Re-Read For Me **** ***** Updated Review Below *****
I decided to re-read this book, as it had been so long since I started the series and I wanted to be able to read the rest of the books with this one fresh in mind. Most of my original review still stands (see original review below), but I believe the saying that, 'familiarity breeds contempt." Now, of course, I'm being excessively dramatic, but would you expect anything less of me? I thought not. ;)
What I really mean is, the second time around I found myself less excited and exuberant than the first time, which could be chalked up to the fact that this was a re-read and just maybe, maybe I was a tiny little bit bored, but I also have now rated it .5 stars lower from my original review due to one very specific scene and underlying tension throughout the book, but I will get to that in a moment.
First, lets just take a moment to stand back in awe and wonder that is Karina Espinosa. She really is, without a doubt, quite terrific. She takes and puts a spin on the Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance genre and does it with absolute grace and originality. Her writing is flawless, in the sense that I never, not once, have to go... "wait, what? How the heck did we jump from that scene to this craziness?" - which is a REALLY BIG DEAL for me. I abhor books that jump without a flow and Ms Espinosa never fails to deliver a seamless flow of writing that makes the story not only flow better, but also keeps you captivated and drawn in. And that, folks, is a GIFT.
Now, let's get to the part that did make me stand back and go, "what the holy hell just happened there? ICK!" So, keep in mind, that the first time I read this book in September 2015, this scene didn't even make a hiccup for me. I breezed past it without a second thought, completely immersed in the story and the world that is all things werewolf - which includes, very bossy, dominate Alphas' that always get their way - and I was happy as a clam. Alright, enough stalling, lets get into the scene:
Mackenzie and Sebastian are in the library for the night, hiding out from a very upset and aggressive Brooklyn pack when Bash decides to make a 'go' for Kenzie. Kenzie had already had an emotionally and sexually charged scene with Jonah, who put a stop to it because he knew he would be taking advantage of Kenzie due to her being so separated from her wolf. Now, go back to the scene with Bash - he literally tells her he doesn't care if its wrong and pushes her after she says stop. He even says, "It's a privilege to be with an Alpha." And thank God, Kenzie even says WTF in her inner dialogue - which is the saving grace of this scene. I had to put the book down in minor (maybe major) disgust. No is NO. Period. End of story. So I was very disappointed in a book that I loved so much, and an author I admire, that this sort of scene was even taking place. However, it didn't go further and again, Kenzie sure the heck put a stop to it, which is why it's so easy to fall in love with her feisty , stubborn to the core spirit.
So, I now understand that my own personal life experiences can taint the way I see things and how I react; I also know where this book intends to go, so I don't want to discourage readers from what is, in fact, an amazing author and gripping series - hence the reason I gave only a .5 reduction instead of smashing this book completely down. I remember the way the series ends up flowing so I still highly recommend this book, regardless of this scene.
So readers, go forth and lap up this book and series - you won't be disappointed!

This is it people. The series I've been searching for every since I fell in love with the Mercy Thompson series. This book is the very definition of why I love werewolf books.
The characters are fan-freaking-tastic. Mackenzie is a force to be reckoned with and is as strong as she is sassy. I definitely love the chemistry between all the characters and I'm so intrigued by how they interact. I absolutely can't wait to see what is going to happen next!

Like, totally-dumbfounded-top-of-my-head-blown-off-mouth-left-hanging-wide-open. I mean, I can't even think of five times that this has even happened to me while reading a book, but here we are.
Barnes delivers a sucker punch to the gut third installment in her The Naturals series. Like most, if not all, of her novels, the characters are written well and have extreme depth and dimension. The actual plot is pretty good as well, although it follows the same type of occurrences as the first two books, but that's to be expected of a crime solving group of teens. It's really the ending that's going to get you. I'm serious.
I'm so stuck on how freaking jaw dropping amazing the ending was, that not much else compares or competes throughout the entire book. I'm extremely excited to see where this takes us in the next book in this series....more
