Na monetki mają chrapkę nie tylko 3 żony miliardera, ale też jego najbliżsi pracownicy. Tymczasem Troy robi wszystkich w bambuko. Po tym dość intrygującym wstępie mamy fabularne rozgałęzienie. Jesteśmy przerzucani między poczynaniami Nate’a, próbującego znaleźć spadkobierczynię w jakiejś brazylijskiej wiosce, a rozpaczliwie walczącymi o bogactwo członkami rodziny Troy’a. O ile drugi z wątków był dość ciekawy (chociaż bohaterów było zdecydowanie zbyt wielu – w końcu całkiem pogubiłam się w gąszczu imion i nazwisk), o tyle pierwszy całkiem mnie wymęczył. Nate podróżuje różnymi środkami transportu i za każdym razem musi się stać jakaś katastrofa. A to burza, a to choroba, a to bycie o włos od zatonięcia… No ludzie drodzy, co to ma być, podróżniczy czyściec? Nawet jeśli, to można było chłopu trochę tych przeżyć darować. Trzeba jednak przyznać, że rewelacyjne przesłuchania pod koniec i świetne zakończenie ratują sprawę. Podsumowując – nie do końca jest to ten Grisham, którego najbardziej lubię. Klika słów z myślą o osobach, którym - podobnie jak mnie - obca była/jest fabuła „Raportu…”. Otóż: przywitajcie lotną studentkę prawa, na której zdecydowanie można zawiesić oko. Darby, bo takie imię nosi nasza urodziwa niewiasta, ma romans ze swoim wykładowcą, Thomasem. Tak się składa, że jej kochaś jest sympatykiem poglądów Rosenberga - jednego z sędziów sądu najwyższego. Pewnego dnia Darby, po obudzeniu się przy boku swojego mężczyzny, dowiaduję się o tragicznej śmierci dwóch sędziów. Jednym z nich jest wspomniany wcześniej Rosenberg. Dziwne jest jednak to, że obaj nieszczęśnicy nie zginęli w jednym wypadku. Zostali zamordowani. W różnych miejscach. Niemalże w tym samym czasie. Darby, zaaferowana sprawą, postanawia zmierzyć się z tematem. Na kilka dni olewa Thomasa oddającego się w tym czasie niezłej popijawie i opracowuje raport, który po pewnym czasie zaczyna być nazywany tytułowym Raportem Pelikana. O dokumencie dowiadują się ważne persony różnych środowisk amerykańskich. Od tego momentu ani Darby, ani nikt z jej otoczenia nie jest bezpieczny.
Co tu dużo mówić – Grisham po raz kolejny mnie nie zawiódł. Dzieje się dużo, dzieje się szybko, a w dodatku historia ma sens. Styl autora jest rewelacyjny. Trochę refleksji, trochę sensacji – równowaga zostaje zachowana. Ani przez sekundę nie miałam wrażenia, że czytam jakąś infantylną sieczkę, co czasem zdarza mi się przy powieściach stricte sensacyjnych. Bohaterowie nie są szarą, bezkształtną masą. Mają dość zróżnicowane charaktery. Nieobce są im zwykłe ludzkie słabości, ciężkie przeżycia, skutki źle dokonanych wyborów. Świat prawniczy? Jak to u Grishama – na pewno nie jest przedstawiony jako wielka kraina szczęśliwości. Środowisko jest bardzo niejednolite: trochę tu hien, trochę idealistów. Gdzieś pomiędzy nimi czai się spora grupa ludzi mniej skrajnie podchodzących do swej profesji. Niektórym udaje się zrobić karierę mimo niechęci do własnego zawodu, inni harują, bo muszą, ale nie dostrzegają znacznych efektów finansowych.
W zasadzie najsłabszym ogniwem „Raportu…” jest.. postać samej Darby. Nie rozumiem, co kierowało autorem, kiedy konstruował tę bohaterkę. Przyznaję, że ogarnęło mnie majówkowe lenistwo, więc może nie wgryzłam się w powieść z należytą uwagą. Nie jestem jednak w stanie wytłumaczyć sobie kilku rzeczy. 1) W jakim celu Darby PODPISAŁA swój raport szczegółowymi danymi? Jeśli dobrze pamiętam, nie była to praca na żadne zajęcia na uczelni (choć tu mogę się mylić). Kto normalny tworzy dokument, w którym oskarża m.in. osoby z najbliższego otoczenia prezydenta i zostawia na nim dane, po których z łatwością można trafić do autora? Sprawa była na tyle poważna, że pewnie i tak po pewnym czasie dałoby radę wyśledzić Darby, ale może zyskałaby kilka dni zwłoki… 2) To całkiem normalne, że kobieta, kilka tygodni po utracie partnera, którego kochała i z którym dzieliła łoże, daje się macać po stopach innemu facetowi. Gdybym widziała, jak osoba, którą darzyłam szczerym uczuciem, ginie w wybuchu – i to wybuchu, który nie był przypadkiem - nie byłabym w stanie podnieść się przez długie lata. Darby wystarczy najwidoczniej krótszy okres. 3) Jakim cudem niemal dwudziestopięcioletnia studentka prawa z dnia na dzień staje się lepsza od FBI w uciekaniu złoczyńcom z wieloletnim doświadczeniem? Serio? Nawet prawnik pracujący dla Federalnych jest w tym gorszy od niej. Kurczę, nie jestem w stanie uwierzyć, iż adrenalina nakręca Darby tak bardzo, że staje się niemal nieomylna w swych działaniach. Nie kupuję tej cudownej przemiany, nawet przy uwzględnieniu inteligencji dziewoi. 4) Nie wiem, co takiego seksownego było w stopach Darby, ale najwidoczniej wszyscy na nie lecieli. Drogie Panie, pamiętajcie – jeśli już zupełnie nie wiecie, jak poderwać jakiegoś faceta, a próbowałyście już wszystkiego, zawsze możecie pomalować paznokcie u stóp na czerwono. Grisham uczy nas tego, że z całą pewnością takie posunięcie zadziała. ;)
„Raport Pelikana” to wg mnie mocne 7/10. Trochę szkoda, że 1-2 oczka poleciały za samą główną bohaterkę (i trochę za dziennikarzynę). Reszta jest naprawdę bardzo dobra. Czy polecam? Z całą pewnością. Historię poznajemy z perspektywy siedmioletniego Luke'a. Ciężko jednak jednoznacznie stwierdzić, czy siedmiolatek "mówi do nas tu i teraz", czy są to wspomnienia dorosłej osoby z lat jej młodości. Narracja jest bowiem prowadzona tak dojrzałym językiem i wypełniona tak rozsądnymi spostrzeżeniami, że ciężko mówić tu o dziecinnym postrzeganiu świata. Z drugiej jednak strony trudno mi pojąć, że siedmiolatkowi powierzano tak odpowiedzialne prace i zadania, o jakich mowa w książce. Kto wie - może faktycznie ludzie dorastali kiedyś dużo (DUŻO!) szybciej. Takie zawirowanie narracyjnie nie wpływa jednak w żaden sposób na odbiór książki.

Jesteśmy świadkami czegoś wielkiego. Czegoś, co pozostanie w ludzkich sercach na zawsze. Z drugiej jednak – musimy się przekopywać przez okropnie nudne opisy spotkań footballowych bądź ich fragmentów.
