6/20 4.5 Stars. Do not be fooled, as I was for way too long, by the "Murderbot" name and assume this is the story of a robot on a killing spree. It's not. All Systems Red was a quick and engrossing sci-fi survival thriller with a surprising main character: a shy and emotionally stunted but capable human/robot-esque hybrid that calls itself Murderbot but is really protective and caring in its own way. Wells pulls off the genderless MC flawlessly, and its awkward personality made it such a sympathetic and relatable character. This is exactly the story I've been looking to read for several years now, so much so I've been trying (and so far failing) to write something similar on my own. Finally I saw one too many rave reviews go by and decided to give it a reluctant try, and after devouring this first adventure in half a day I am now scrambling to get my hands on the next one!

February 2019 Review:
Genre: Self-Help Fiction Content Rating: Teen (adult worries) Format Read: Paperback (library)
When I first began seriously tidying in 2017, I was greatly inspired by Kondo's non-fiction self-help book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, as well as the sequel, Spark Joy. So you can imagine that when mangaphile me discovered the existence of this manga spin-off last month, I had to read it immediately. To my surprise, what I thought would be little more than an illustrated version of the text book was actually a highly informative fiction story about unlucky-in-love career woman Chiaki, who hires real-life author Marie Kondo to help her tidy her disaster-zone apartment. As Kondo walks Chiaki through the KonMari Method steps, we see how tidying your space can also tidy your life - and give you a new lease on it.
Because it was a manga the book was a quick and fun read, but thanks to being predominantly composed of images it really opened up the KonMari Method for me - I understood the concepts a lot better than I had in the text book. The simple art style will appeal to regular manga consumers as well as non-manga readers, especially those who absorb content better in picture over text form. Also, with a highly relatable main character like Chiaki, and even the start of a sweet relationship for the romantics, it's a great read for those who learn better in story form as well.
Conclusion: A quick, fun and informative guide to decluttering using the KonMari Method. Highly recommend for mangaphiles looking to tidy as well as general self-help readers, especially those who want to try a different medium....more

In a Sentence: An engrossing and exhilarating teen sci-fi with a kick-arse female lead and sweet but strong sentient ship.
This was one of those books that I loved so much I had to read it twice to review it, and very happily did so. Blessed with getting my hands on an early copy it was my favorite read of 2017, and my 2018 reads have been hard-pressed to beat it out for best 2018 release.
Main character Zara was tough and kick-arse and, while a bit broken, her openness to embrace and bond with a sentient spaceship proved the recipe for now one of my favorite characters ever. Her story engaged me from Page 1, as did the original alien race of Leviathan and their mysterious motivations. Nadim was an absolute lamb, sweet and strong and curious and a bit broken himself, and his intimate (but non-sexual, they are completely different species) relationship with Zara has to be one of asexual me's favorite relationships of all time.
The story was a rather relentless and engrossing thrill-ride packed with action and emotion and mystery that I did not want to put down and breezed through twice with ease. Although almost 500 pages long, the plot and setting and characters were so engaging I actually felt it wasn't long enough. I despaired over the whole week of Honors training that was skipped over, and feel it and more training time aboard Nadim could've, if nothing else, really opened up Beatriz's character. Although I really liked what she brought to the story, she never seemed quite a fully formed character, her actions driven by the story instead of a comprehensive personality. She was probably my only slight disappointment with this otherwise mind-blowing book, and I hope she will come into her own in the sequel.
Conclusion: I've said this about books in the past but with its strong main character, sweet sentient spaceship, and their intimate but non-sexual relationship all set in space, Honor Among Thieves has come the closest to being that book written just for me. I cannot begin to express how much I'm dying to get my hands on the sequel, Honor Bound, due to release February 2019!...more
