Compact urban areas lead to creativity and new start-ups, as any latte drinking hipster will tell you. But the city also provides less pleasant things, which sometimes take epidemic forms such as crime and drug use.
This makes the city "man's greatest invention" - it is a history of man (or woman). Not of thinkers, princes or politicians, but of mankind itself. Cities are being formed by people, for people.
Starting with Uruk, the first city in Mesopotamia (4000-1900 BC) and ending with Lagos in Nigeria at the beginning of the 21st century, we are confronted with a whole range of - sometimes unexpected - topics: prostitution in Babylon, bathing culture in Rome and street food in Baghdad.
A 500-page history of the city: it could easily be boring. But by jumping in time, and by telling lots of facts and anecdotes, Wilson keeps the momentum going. It provides a very pleasant reading experience. We find ourselves in sixth century Baghdad, where we accompany a rich lady while shopping for exotic goods to sixteenth-century London where Sephardic Jewish refugees are frying fish.
“Metropolis” is a bold undertaking that makes for gripping reading, and uses a original approach - I really liked it.

In this book he gives a factual overview of the find of the 5,000 year old mummy in the glacier in the Alps. When he was brought in by the forensic experts, and when he sets his eyes on the corpse for the first time:
On the slab lies the shrivelled corpse of a man, naked except for a strange, grass filles shoe [...] Laid out on the same slab, on a piece of green cloth, are the other finds - the axe, a small dagger and a wooden stick with holes in it. I only need a few seconds. This is something that any first-year archeology student could identify [...] I straighten up and give my verdict: "Roughly four thousand years old". [The forensic experts] look at me with total disbelief.
Most of his conclusions (for example that Ötzi died of exhaustion or was possibly buried) are already outdated at this time of writing (August 2020) but for this he can be excused of course, as this book was written in 1994. In later times, for example with the DNA technology, a lot more interesting facts came to be known. All in all, this book might be a good choice for somebody wanting to read about the initial discovery and subsequent consternation. For somebody looking for an up-to-date overview of all the findings, this book might not be the right choice....more
At such moments the emotions evade verbal expression, complex and stirring as they are. Three thousand years and more had elapsed since men's eyes had gazed into that golden coffin. Time, measured by the brevity of human life, seemed to lose its common perspectives before a spectacle so vividly recalling the solemn religious rites of a vanished civilization

It is told from the heart and the feelings that Howard felt during the initial discovery and subsequent excavation and a personal account. If you have any interest(s) in archaeology, this is a must read book.
Let me finish with this quote from Howard Carter:
For the moment – an eternity it must have seemed to the others standing by – I was struck dumb with amazement, and when Lord Carnarvon, unable to stand in suspense any longer, inquired anxiously "Can you see anything?", it was all I could do to get out the words "Yes, wonderful things

Michael Parker Pearson is an English archaeologist specialising in the study of the Neolithic British Isles, and is a professor at the UCL Institute oMichael Parker Pearson is an English archaeologist specialising in the study of the Neolithic British Isles, and is a professor at the UCL Institute of Archaeology. He was the director of the Stonehenge Riverside Project, which for a couple of years did some extensive archeological research on Stonehenge and its surroundings. This book is his view on the results and interpretation of the findings.
As a result of the project, a new understanding can be created for the function of Stonehenge. Stonehenge was a place of burial for a long period of its use, built on a geological feature that coincided with the solstice axis and was surrounded by a large settlement, where people came from far and away for seasonal feasting and to honour the dead. It also shows that Stonehenge was part of a much bigger complex, with large timber circles which haven't endured the test of time.
It gives some great new insights in the role and function of Stonehenge and may be interesting for the archaeological interests....more

Not only the way it was solved, but in particular the story of the two people who contributed most to this. People who were outsiders of the academic world: Alice Kober and Michael Ventris. How could an obscure New York woman and an architect from England stun the academic world by deciphering a script on which the scientists had grinded their teeth for decades?
The book is divided into three parts: the first part is about Arthur Evans, the archaeologist who discovered the first clay tablets with the Linear B script. The second part is about Alice Kober, who took some great first steps in deciphering, but unfortunately died early. The third part is about the one who finally managed to decipher it: Michael Ventris.
In an extremely understandable way, Margalit Fox shows how Alice Kober and Michael Ventris eventually managed to decipher the script. She shows what principles Alice and Michael have used, what attempts finally led to the decipherment. All this in a legible and entertaining way, without ever loosing herself in too much theoretical chatter.
The author argues in her book that the role of Alice Kober, in the so far published (biographical) literature on this subject, has been underexposed. In this book, the author tries to put this right and is trying to paint the full picture. In her eyes, Alice Kober’s work and reputation has been until now underestimated and above all, not appreciated. She argues that without the work of Alice Kober, the script could never been translated.
It's a pity that the author has chosen this approach. It was not necessary at all: apart from the author's attempt to restore Alice Kober's reputation, this book is an excellent and highly readable treatise on the efforts to translate the cipher by the three main contributors. That is the real power of this book. The so-called attempt to reinstate the reputation of Alice Kober is only a distraction....more

Philippa Langley, member of the Richard Society, is standing on a car park in Leicester. She has a weird feeling - somewhere below here she suspects that Richard III has been buried. Philippa decides to go on a quest - a quest to search for Richard III and have him reburied with honours.
This book combines the personal search from Philippa with a (short) biography of Richard III. For me, as a non Brit, it was interesting to read how Richard III was mispresented by his successor, Henry Tudor. It seems that the Tudors have used the three 'M's' of the Ricardian realm to present us with a villain so alienated from the world around him that he will be cursed by his own mother: misshapen, Machiavellian and murderous.
But was the actual Richard III so terrifying, or was his character progressively blackened by the Tudor dynasty that supplanted him? By searching for the king's lost grave, and the remains that lie within it, finally gives us the chance to connect with the reality behind the Tudor myth.
The book doesn't paint Richard III as a villain. He was a man, who played the hand he was dealt loyally and, as far as he could within the limitations of his time, humanely....more
