Obviously I loved how much more we saw of Rhy (he’s vying with Lila for my favorite character spot) - I wish there had even been more. I was always reading the Kell bits wondering how what he was doing would affect his brother when we got to read that. I loved how the relationships developed or how we got more insight in to them (the royal family with Kell and Alucard with Rhy especially) I enjoyed seeing more of Holland and getting some more understanding of him and his character’s motivations. I freaking love Lila and want a ton more of her. This book was LONG and it just wasn’t enough- I love these characters and the writing style and the world building and just want more 😭😭😭...more

I had originally given it a four, but couldn’t remember at all what it was about, except in what way they’re not normal. Ok. I figured it was probably not great and I had been overly nice the first time, if I couldn’t remember anything.
Yet as I started reading it, parts started flooding back. I’ve forgotten it until we get to a new twist and then I’m like “oh yeah, and this will happen” so I’m getting to enjoy the twists again but feel like I “get” the character’s motivations more.
It is pretty cheesy, but that’s fine for me. The word choices, grammar, actual writing aren’t terrible but aren’t amazing either - and I keep reading the funny-in-how-cheesy-they-are lines to my husband.
I remember vaguely liking Russel and rooting for him, but this reread I find him so obnoxious, although Evie is no walk in the park herself as she strings these guys along trying to figure out her heart. ...more

I started off a little concerned that I wouldn't be able to sort out who was who and what was going on, because in theory a protagonist hopping bodies is very interesting, but in practice I was lost at who the main character was relating to - since they could've just been who they are relating to moments ago. This combined with the hopping around out of order in the retelling of the protagonist's early time line in the beginning of the book had me struggling to follow along. Not due to poor writing, but due to my own weakness in sorting out multiple POVs and non-linear timelines. However, I stuck with it and maybe 20-25% of the way in, began to feel like I knew who was who in that moment. I think I'd like to go back and re-read at least the beginning in a bit to see if it makes more sense to me now that I "know" the characters. The thriller part of the plot line was exciting and was all I hoped for in a thriller, and the science-fiction/fantasy/speculative elements were thought provoking and interesting. I think the only reason I didn't feel it was a five was my own confusion, so that may change if/when I reread. ...more

The premise was interesting, I enjoyed the main character, and the race politics gave lots of moments to look at how it shaped the lives of people of color (even if like Katherine (view spoiler)[ and Jane’s Mama (hide spoiler)] they could pass for white, life was still dangerous) I’d definitely pick up the sequel. I had some theories and none ended up being the twists, so I enjoy that it kept me guessing, and there was plenty of danger and action, both from the walking dead and from other humans....more

Is the “we’re destined to be together” trope kind of problematic? Sure. (And it also appears in her Dark Ones series) But Aisling is freaking awesome, the plot is funny, the supporting characters are lovely (through out the series), and Aisling might give in to her attraction now and again, but she’s clear that the relationship (or lack of) will be on her terms. As the series continues, I feel like they both mature and make concessions quite a bit and evolve into a less problematic relationship - even when they cameo in the other dragons’ series. This book isn’t perfect but it’s super fun, and I enjoy it as an introduction to this couple....more
